I believe that others have a higher professional conception of their nursing role than I, and this is also something I need to improve on. I believe role conception and self-image goes hand in hand. How does a nurse suppose to act? I believe that my attitude is influenced by my coworkers. I think that this is easy to work on. I just need to realize merely that everyone has their opinion and are entitled to that. I personally think that the value of nursing has changed. And with that, it is influencing socialization outcomes. Everyone has different values and need to be put aside when practicing nursing and providing patient care. I feel that there is a way to manage both while practicing. I must realize that the patients do not always share my value system. I do possess a strong commitment to practice in my field, belief in the dignity and worth of each and everyone, and autonomy. My personality plays a big impact with my professional socialization. The need for autonomy is important and I believe that I possess this already. According to Fetzer (2003) “ RN to BSN students had already developed professionalism as a result of their practice and exposure to work place experiences” (p. 1). The learner must achieve a sense of identity in occupation, politics, and values. Professional identity involves the internalization of core values which becomes evident as the student learns, gains experience, and grows as a professional (Benner et al., 2010). Professional identity is foundational to the assumption of various nursing roles. In the age of collaborative practice, it may be especially challenging for the novice to distinguish nursing practice from that of other health care providers. Experience has taught this learner what to expect and how to respond in a given situation. The proficient learner begins to view the whole situation. This holistic understanding makes decision less difficult (Benner et al., 2010).
The second provision I chose describes the importance of continued education in the nursing field. This education can be through continuing education credits (CEUs), advancements in a degree, or participating part of a work force committee. Advancements are always being made in patient care and safety; for this reason the state of MN requires 24 continuing education credits every two years. This can be completed through online courses, lectures, conferences, and courses that meet requirements. The hospital I work for also provides emails, bulletin boards, and meetings on any changes or updates that will effect and implemented by nursing staff. Besides meeting my employers and state requirements, I am also currently a student to obtain a BSN in nursing.
My professional presence is more mind/spirit rather than all three combined. As I stated earlier, I rely on my relationship with God to help me make professional as well as personal decision. I work in community nursing, where there’s not a lot of critical care to be given, but I still have to use critical thinking skills in some situations. I have often seen patients come in with physical illnesses and soon realized that some of the patients have mental illnesses as well.
