Once we understand requirements for the position, then next step is to define ways of meeting those needs. It includes the amount of resources and authority the position provides to fulfill the business need. A job description can be as simple as a list of tasks required by the individual holding the position. Formal job descriptions will include level of responsibility, expected outcome, including reporting line and other interactions. Once expectations, and means of attaining expectations are documented, then sketching ideal candidate will become easier.

The recruitment and selection process can affect the efficiency and effectiveness of any organisation so it is crucial that the right person is employed for the job. The selection process also involves the image as an employer and its ability to attract quality staff. When an individual is applying for a job, he/she will need to undergo some steps.

Prior to the start of WRT-382, I had put little thought into my resume and cover letter. I didn’t realize that hiring employers spend less than a minute on each applicant’s resumes. I understand now that there has to be a clear and consistent theme to market and brand yourself. I also know now that having a skimable resume can make you seem more appealing than others even if they are more qualified. After learning about the components of a professional portfolio, I have learned how to condense my qualifications while modifying them to the specific employer.

References and Documentation Whether you fill out an application in-person or online, gather all your reference and employment information before you start filling out the form to prevent delays or omissions. For this weeks assignment I enjoyed learning how to create a cover letter for a resume. In the past I have written many resumes for potential career opportunities. Thinking back I always dreaded having to write a resume along with creating a cover letter. Sending in a cover letter was never a priority of mine when applying for a job. After reading up on cover letters, i now know it is just as important as the resume. Never taking in consideration how many resumes and applications an employer goes through when hiring a potential candidate. Understanding the importance of a cover letter helps to individualize you as an applicant, and makes it easier for an employer to decide if you are qualified for the position.

First Paragraph: Start by trying to grab attention without being ‘gimmicky’. Give the reason you are writing. Name the specific position or type of work for which you are applying. Sometimes it may be a good idea too to also mention how you learned of the opening.
