Recommend News with Twitter - A Survey Study ∗
ABSTRACT
This paper is a survey study of recent researches on Twitter, in particularly the field of recommendation system and user profile. Twitter is a social network service which has become the hotspot in both industry and academic research recently. With large amount of user and the asymmetric friend rela- tionship, the users on Twitter actually forms an interesting social network. Also, the short nature of tweets(the status that users posted on Twitter) and the freedom that Twitter grants for users ensured some good property of the tweets such as real-time and broadness of topics. Researchers has been trying to extract information from tweets or model- ing users for recommendation purpose. This paper will go through some work in this area and analyze these methods. Moreover, this paper provides some thought for future re- search direction based on these attempts.

1. INTRODUCTION

Social media is used to share and receive information during interactions with others through the uses of the internet. Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, and Instagram are some of the most commonly used social networking sites that people interact with. Twitter users post their thoughts, ideas and dreams for the world to see, opening the door for others to comment and interpret. Snapchat does not even require the user to communicating using the written word, but rather encourages communication through visual stimuli.

Social media networking is not a program or website, it is a phenomenon where people, institutions can collaborate and connect online both professionally and socially. People can interact and share ideas without geographical, physical or time limitations.
Social media is group of online commutation tools made available to the general publics and based on community interaction and sharing of content such as videos, tweets conversations likes, pictures etc. etc. According to Mintel (Mintel 2016) most prominent brands are starting to incorporate the latest going in the social media community such as trends, memes and latest news in the social media to try and connect the younger crowd and allow them to visit their social media platform.
In this day and age, social media has become an integral part of our lives. It has created a platform for people to share information instantly and communicate with people all around the world. Facebook is the most outstanding example of successful social media network. According to the first quarter 2015 earnings announcement by Facebook, the site has achieved 1.44 billion active users per month, and 65% of which are daily active users. Other social networking sites such as Twitter, Instagram and LinkedIn are also a powerful means of communication. With such a large audience, social networking sites provide ample opportunities to acquire information, network, and connect with friends.
Social media is a broad term that encompasses a variety of technologies and platforms with one common feature: they all provide a means for people to share information (Business Dictionary, n.d.). Some other common features aside from the sharing of information are the ability for visitors to create personalized profiles or accounts where they can post information for others to view and the ability to link their accounts to others (often referred to with words such as “friends” or “connections”) (Nations, n.d.).
Social media platforms have become a big part of the technologically advanced and dependant society we have today. Twitter is among the many social media sites that have acquired users from all corners of the world. Founded by Evan Williams, Biz Stone, Jack Dorsey and Noah Glass after their failed attempt at launching Odeo, the social media site is now worth at least 5 billion dollars. Since its launch in July 2006, Twitter now has approximately 300 million active users, sending messages of 140 characters each time at any time that suits them or when they have things to express. As is the case for all social media sites, there are both pros and cons of having Twitter as a medium of communication.
Social media is a technological tool that allows users to share information (Business Dictionary, n.d.). Within the term the “social” component means sharing with others and the “media” component refers to the technology that allows for the sharing (Nations, n.d.)
This defines the basic set up of social networking, a person creates an account to share with friends, co-workers and others which thus creating a network of people that’s spreads information. Many of you might be familiar with social networking sites which include websites like LinkedIn, Facebook, MySpace, and Twitter.
Moreover, social network is being taken more seriously than before. The world is changing in every second; as a result, people rely on social network to get information instead of watching television at six o’clock in the early morning, In China, according to a report, Weibo (Chinese Twitter) has confirmed 84,377 of government services accounts until 26th June this year (Sina News 2014). What citizens are able to get from social media is not limited to entertainment or sharing with friends, but also useful updated information for daily life and political policies. In a bid to accept technological advancements, the term social networking has become inevitable and has to be embraced. Social networks have greatly accelerated their place towards transforming lives as they have brought out an easy way of communication. Whether at in our homes or mobile phones, they have brought in varied changes on how communication takes place. Twitter is online social networking web service and a micro-blogging service that makes it possible for its users to send and read messages that are text based that contain a limited number of characters of approximately 140 (Peterson, 2012). These messages are known as tweets and are usually displayed on ones profile. This is a way of building up a social network and gets connected to the right people. It is one of the leading social networking sites on the web where the users can subscribe to other users tweets and this is known as following and those who subscribe are known as followers. It is a miniature blog for people who want a blog but do not want a blog. It is often described as a cross between blogging and instant messaging.
Social networks are new platforms that people use to communicate to each other. These social networking sites have had a large jump on membership over the years. In 2005 the amount of internet users that used social networks sites such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram was roughly 8% compared to 73% in 2013 according to the Pew Internet Project. This jump was mainly because people were using social networking to keep contact with people from their past as well as speaking with new people. Social networks continue growing because of the variety of ways they allow people to express themselves. Instagram, which was created by Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger in 2010, allows people to post pictures of themselves for others to see, while Twitter, founded in 2006 by Jack Dorsey, Evan Williams, Biz Stone and Noah Glass, lets people send short messages in 140 or less characters. These differences are the main reason people flock to multiple different social networking sites.
Worldwide, Twitter is a major player in the social media industry. The company has a large user base and revenues to the tune of billions. With the onset of interaction via social media, the corporation capitalized on this and became a leading brand in the industry. Twitter is used globally and almost every famous or influential person has an account in this online service. One of its best strategies was creating the followers. Thus, since inception, the company has been steadily growing its user’s base as well as revenues.
According to the Twitter website, Twitter is a free social networking microblogging service that allows registered members to broadcast short posts called tweets. Ranked the top five of most popular social media site in the world. Twitter members can broadcast tweets and follow other users ' tweets by using multiple platforms and devices. Tweets can be made by cell phone text message, desktop client or by posting at the Twitter.com website. The default settings for Twitter are public. Unlike Facebook or LinkedIn, where members need to approve social connections, anyone can follow anyone on public Twitter. Twitter uses a hashtag which connect them to a general topic, members can add hashtags to a keyword in their post. I decided to dabble into the world of twitter. Since I have been using twitter for about a month now I learned quite a lot of things.
Twitter is one of the best social networking stage where millions of users can communicate with each other, post their thoughts and keep a track on all the on-going topics. Its popularity has reached millions of people all round the world. Popularity of the twitter apart, there are few disadvantages that are connected with this social networking platform. Few of them include spammers, hacking or forging of accounts. This paper mainly deals with testing the already existing methods for discovering useless activities on twitter, and to identify the twitter spammers.
