The two most common research techniques are to randomly select a nationally representative sample and conduct either a phone or written survey of the subjects. A few researchers select individuals for their survey, but another common technique is to select a random sample of Physicians and interview them about their patients.

I will now be explaining the five roles of research and giving an example for each one of the roles. The five roles of research include: research to inform policy or practice, research to extend knowledge and understanding, research to improve practice, research to aid reflection and allow progress to be monitored and finally research to examine topics of contemporary importance.

Another disadvantage would be the Interviewer Effect. This is when the interviewer may ask leading questions that provokes an answer. The age, ethnicity, nationality, tone of voice, facial expression or gender of the interviewer may also influence answers given. Because the investigation is based on educational achievement, it is likely the interviewer is going to interview pupils. Therefore, the interviewee will be young in age and most likely to be impressionable; therefore, they are most likely to be influenced on their answers.

Research methods are “the various specific tools or ways data can be collected and analysed, e.g. a questionnaire, interview, etc.” (Neville, C, 2007).

The third resource that I used is from the Office of Justice Programs/Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS). A specific article titled “Intimate Partner Violence in the United States” shows a graph of intimate partner violence rates declining from 1993 to 2006. The article is quite vague, with no real description or stats stating whether or not men commit more violence against women than women do against men. “Violence between intimates is difficult to measure because it often occurs in private, and victims are often reluctant to report incidents to anyone because of shame or fear of reprisal” (S. Catalano).

Methods used in psychological research are used to obtain quantitative or qualitative data. Quantitative data is more often than not derived from methods such as experiments and statistics analysing data using surveys, questionnaires and interviews. Qualitative data tends not to be aimed at finding exact measurements in its findings, but is more concerned with evidence collection and analysis through practices such as observation and ethnography (using observations through involvement in activities over a period of time) (Brownlow 2011).

Compare and contrast the following qualitative research methods: case study, phenomenological, and grounded theory. Synthesize the findings and determine which is best suited to a study on your potential dissertation topic. Analyze the issues associated with sample selection, validity, and bias in such a study.

One method of research is using interviews. For example, when using interviews in a care home, when conducting research, many ethical issues can be raised. Interviews not only take place face-to-face, but also can happen on the phone, online, through text messaging, using a video messenger and though social media. Interviews are a very useful way of collecting information because a wide range of detailed information can be collected at a large quantity. There are two types of interviews: structured or unstructured.

It has also been stated that even though these are the preferred methods, if the research is not done correctly, there will not be much value in the data. For example when doing a verbal interview such as I did when going shop to shop and asking my questions. Once the verbal information is obtained, it will need to be placed into a word for and document to be analyzed (Remenyi, 2011). It is also mentioned that it is very important, what questions are asked and how they are asked. The directness of the questions, the exact wording and the order in which they are put. This is all most critical to the way the information is later interpreted and used. It is also important to choose the wording correctly. The purpose of this study is to determine whether socioeconomic status impedes the cognitive development of African American boys’ literacy in schools. This is a quantitative research study using an exploratory research design. This design will show how socioeconomic status correlates with poverty, lack of parental involvement, and environmental factors. The researcher will use snowball sampling to gain participants from a referral from an initial participant from this survey. The survey will be given to 20 participants at the City View Apartments in the West Blvd neighborhood community; that will have closed ended questions for desired results of this research. All responses will be confidential and used solely for the purpose of this study.

The study for this thesis will be exploratory research using secondary data collected by the communication agency, MESH Planning. The agency developed an innovative approach called ‘real-time experience tracking’, which involves three stages of data collection. And both qualitative and quantitative data will be collected and used in this context in order to get an insight of critical incidents.
