A non-communicable disease (NCD) is defined as a disease which is not infectious. Such diseases may result from genetic or lifestyle factors. Such diseases may result from genetic or lifestyle factors. Current evidence indicates that four types of NCDs (i.e. cardiovascular diseases, cancers, diabetes and chronic respiratory diseases) account for almost two third of all deaths globally, with 80 per cent of these deaths occurring in low-income and middle-income countries. NCDs are a leading threat to health and development. Yet, these diseases are preventable. By eliminating shared risk factors such as tobacco use, unhealthy diet, physical inactivity and the harmful use of alcohol, almost 80 per cent of heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes and over a third of all cancers could be prevented. In addition, improved disease management can reduce morbidity, disability and death and contribute to better health outcomes. Overall, proven cost-effective strategies do exist to prevent and control this growing burden.

This city of Port Orange is located in Central Florida, in Volusia County. Dr Milton Hawks arrived during what was actually the second wave of settlers to explore what is now known as Port Orange. He is also credited with giving the settlement its name. It was incorporated April 26th of 1867. As of the U.S. census there were 56,048 residents of the growing city. The city’s total area is 28.7 square miles, of which 2.0 sq miles are made up of water and 26.6 sq miles are land. Port Orange is a beautiful city on the East Coast of Florida, home of the World’s most famous beach. With average temperatures in the 80-90s in the summer, many Port Orange residents enjoy the
1. Explain how and why person-centred values must influence all aspects of health and social work
Communicable disease outbreak occurs when there is a larger then expected incidence of a disease. It can affect a small group or thousands of people in a region. In some instances even just two independent cases can lead to an outbreak, eventually leading to an epidemic, or pandemic which refers to a global outbreak. Measles is a communicable disease that is highly contagious according to the World Health Organization (WHO). The good news is that it is a preventable disease, because there is a vaccine that is available to prevent people from contracting it. One complication that arises is when some people
Over the year both positive and negative influences have influenced my learning. The skill I have developed for learning is my aspiration is to become a midwife, this influences my learning in the way that it gives me the hunger to learn new things and improve my knowledge and grades. By improving my knowledge I will be able to go onto the next stage of my development. I believe that if I did not have such a desire to be a midwife, it would affect my learning by creating a mental blockage which would stop my ability to take things in and learn as I would become lazy and not interested from the lack of direction in my life. As soon as I realised what I wanted to do as a career, it really highlighted my priorities and I found that I have
C1 - Nurseries have different procedures which the EYPs follow and abide by; in my nursery they undertake risk assessments to safeguard children. Taking risk assessments minimises the chance of accidents and ill health. The EYPs look at situations and what accidents could happen and decide on how they may do things differently. According to Meggitt [2015], “Risk assessments on aspects such as security of the building, fire safety, food safety, toilet hygiene and nappy changing.” It is important that EYPs carry out regular risk assessments as parents are putting children in the nurseries care and the EYPs have a duty of care to support the child’s well-being, therefore through carrying out these risk assessments the EYP is fulfilling their duty of care.
Though California has many large urban centers with many hospitals in the state, it still suffers a shortage of doctors. As touched upon in the previous section, the state government has begun to offer incentives for doctors to practice in the state and is even in the process of allowing immigrants who are physicians in other countries to make up for the shortage. At this time the Federal role in California’s healthcare system seems only to be to enforce the universal healthcare laws passed by congress. The best course of action then, would be to focus on building a relationship with the state government in regards to incentives in healthcare. Also as stated previously, APHI should not fall into the same trap as Kaiser did in North Carolina by becoming the state’s sole healthcare provider. As lucrative as it sounds, by taking on the state’s burden
I admire your vision about starting a low-income clinic for the needy and to cater for the immigrants. I had experienced not being able to get medical care because I could not afford private insurance and did not have enough money to pay for a private clinic. Starting a low-income clinic will really benefit those that cannot afford to pay for healthcare benefits.
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is the U.S. government’s principal agency for protecting the health of all Americans and providing essential human services, especially for those who are least able to help themselves. HHS is responsible for almost a quarter of all federal outlays and administers more grant dollars than all other federal agencies combined. The mission of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is to enhance the health and well-being of Americans by providing for effective health and human services and by fostering sound, sustained advances in the sciences underlying medicine, public health, and social services. In addition, HHS is also responsible to provide better services to people by adapting to new technologies to keep pace with the advancement in technology. As we compare the health and human services from last ten years to present, it is very clear to analyze how health and human systems have improved over the years. The Department manages programs that cover a vast spectrum of activities that impact health, public health, and human services outcomes throughout the life span.
Many of the individuals who live within these communities are elderly, immigrants, farmers and migrants. They work and live off their land and lack the needed funds to purchase health insurance, because it is not affordable and they do not have transportation or a way of getting on bus routes, because they live so far out. The nearest local hospital is about 50 miles away and if they get seriously injured they must wait for an ambulance or life flight to arrive with an additional ride of about an hour before they receive adequate care in case of an emergency.
A challenge that many rural communities are dealing with is the lack of primary care physicians, specialist, understaffed hospitals, and transportation. “Only about ten percent of physicians practice in rural America despite the fact that nearly one-fourth of the population lives in these areas” (National Rural Health Association [NHRA], n.d., para. 2). Although, there are programs designed to improve patients access to hospitals and physicians in rural areas, provider access for these patients remains a barrier. Technology can bridge some of the gaps of care for these patients and it can be beneficial in many ways. With enhanced technology, primary care physicians and patients will be able to have support, access to quality care, improvement in self-management skills, which ultimately, will improve a patient’s health. To assist physicians with delivery of optimal care and for patients to be able to go to scheduled wellness visits with physicians, a new approach to solving rural health barriers are needed.
