A good and healthy relationship with your superior or boss is essential to being effective in your job (Gabarro and Kotter, 1993). Regardless of where one works they always report to at least one person, it is important to manage the relationship in order to advance in ones career. This is because the subordinate depends more on the boss than the boss on the subordinate and the boss holds the key to short-term success and future of that individual. Not only can the boss at any time can let go or offload that person but can also consciously or unconsciously decide not to involve the person in certain projects and keeping him or her out of the communication and giving his or her role or projects to other individuals (Kelley, 2014). It is therefore important to manage the relationship with the boss in order to last long in the company, maintain your position and status and gain promotions and recommendations.

With a close working relationship a supervisor should be able to confront the subordinate and be able to resolve the issue. The resolution may range from simply counseling the subordinate, all the way up to possible disciplinary action.

The importance of maintaining relationships with subordinates is that they will be more inclined to follow orders or to do the work you may have set them effectively. When speaking to subordinates, it is best to treat them how you would treat anyone else so they don’t feel like they are being belittled you. If your relationship with subordinates becomes fractured then they may be less inclined to put their full effort into doing the tasks you have set them.
Managers make many decisions every day. Thankfully there are many tools available to a manager as they make these decisions. I chose to interview Regina Geis, who holds the administrative role as acting supervisor for the County Mental Health adult day program, which provides services for individuals with intellectual disabilities. Ms. Geis has held this position for 15 months. This is her first managerial position within a human service agency. Her style of management has changed over this short period of time. She feels that she is now more direct with her direction with staff. She stated, “Maybe now I come across as a little bit cold. But I have learned that I now have to use the least amount of words to get my point across.”

This era has become very competitive and in order for organizations to be successful they need leaders to establish and manage relationships and lead their subordinates accordingly in order to achieve the company’s mission and objectivity. If subordinates have uncertainties that are not directed accordingly it can result in an unhealthy environment, and in turn it will affect the growth of the organization, therefore good leadership is necessary.
One Minute Manager is a short story written by Kenneth Blanchard and Spencer Johnson. The story is about a young man who is in search of an effective manager because not only did he want to work for one but he is also wanted to become one. His search for this ideal manager took him to many places and made him interact with a lot of different individuals. He wasn’t pleased with what he encountered and he began to notice that most of the people he interviewed would fall into two categories: those who were interested in results and those were interested in people meaning their employees. He continued his search until he began to hear amazing stories about a manager that lived nearby. The young man met with this
Knowing how to work effectively with leaders is key to ethical followership. As I was growing up, I naturally looked for ways to help my community. It was an concept that I was extremely fond and passionate about at an early age. Through this, leadership came easily and almost inherently. When high school came I emerged myself within the wide variety of activities. It was just an effortless tendency. I loved being involved, therefore I got myself involved. As a freshmen, I was at the bottom and I watched in amazement of how the upperclassmen led with such confidence and drive. I aspired to be like them one day. With this large desire to make my mark in my small community, I naturally took on leadership roles because I wanted to make an impact, a lasting impact. John Quincy Adams once said, “If your actions inspire others
