The recent radio renaissance has revived a dying media platform, bringing something seemingly meant for older generations to those old and young. Many popular radio programs now are Top 40 popular music shows with disc jockeys that endorse sponsors every ten minutes, or boisterous morning shows for the early commuters. However, as media transitioned into digital platforms, there has been a rise in alternative radio and podcasts. There are numerous programs available but looking for something different and interesting, I decided to analyze the radio program Science Friday and their episode “Emoji Interpretation, Sonification, Orchid Deception.” Although online video and music streaming services lured viewers and listeners astray, there has been a resurgence of radio and audio media. This occurrence can be credited to a variety of factors. First, radio and podcasts can be cheaper and easier productions than film or …show more content…
Content is especially important for a radio program or podcasts, particularly because they do not have any added visuals to complement their information. Whereas television can just show funny or interesting moments, radio also does not have any images to stimulate audience interest. On their website, Science Friday employs numerous techniques to entice listeners. In their latest episode, they talk about animal “selfies” and how GPS systems might be affecting people’s perceptions of the world. To encourage people to listen to the episode, they pair the audio file with images of cute animals, along with articles that provide additional information on each topic. Because the segments of each topic are around 10 to 15 minutes long, the producers of the show recognize that all the information on the topic cannot fit into one episode and offer supplemental
Mark Ronson’s TED talk “How sampling transformed music” appeals to all three modes of persuasion and rhetorical elements such as organizational patterns. This TED talk may not seem relevant to everyday peoples lives, but it really explains how sampling music does affect the way generations hear and appreciate music. It opens a new perspective to a music listener to learn some of the chart topping songs on the radio contain samples of music from the past and people do not even know

Yet some readers may challenge my view by insisting that the radio industry is a dying industry and that a new website is a waste of resources. While it is true that the radio industry isn’t what it once was it doesn’t mean that it can’t adapt to the changing times. A new website will help the radio station get with the times. It will also help keep the station financially afloat by bringing in new users and ideally those new users would lead to donations.

Social media has had a profound effect on the likability of certain genres and the artists that create music in those genres. The way in which we discover music today has drastically changed. Prior to the existence and popularity of social media, listeners listened to and discovered new music through the radio, album purchases, or from word of mouth. Music lovers today are discovering their music through social media, from small music blogs to online streaming sites. Various entertainment companies around the world have begun to rely on social media marketing; a marketing style in which companies use various social media
Building upon existing work regarding interactive online content creation, this article examines local-level music production and distribution to demonstrate how musicians cultivate audiences through social capital that is exchanged both on- and off-line. More importantly, it examines how they do this digitally to build an
In “Could This Be the Year Movies Stopped Mattering?” by Brian Raftery, Raftery empathizes how present-day individuals are constantly absorbed towards social media and discover other alternatives to satisfy their entertainment needs. This led to the belief that movies are considered less significant. Furthermore, the author provides us with examples for instance, music, considered an unappreciated category of entertainment, yet unexpectedly, it is a resurgence and recurring item in today’s pop culture, and television, cinema’s long-time competitor in the entertainment industry. He also blames the sudden advancement based on the unexpected deaths of talented artists and a surplus of must hear albums from present artists. Meanwhile, in the year
Today’s society demands that the media plays an active part. With the invention of the smart phone and internet, people have ready access to
Welcome to the Internet Age, in which the world’s globalizing forces are intensified, where the music, literature, and other sources of entertainment of one person’s culture can be accessed at the tap of a keyboard and click of a button by a person of a different culture, where people of one country can be influenced by the music of a different nation through the songs’ message, where a culture of one realm can become similar to the culture of others more quickly than in the past. But in Canada, there is much debate on how much of these foreign media should be shown to us, hence why at the dawn of this Era of The World Wide Web, an agency dedicated to regulating radio-television and telecommunications, the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications
The music industry has been around for over two centuries (PBS). Its volatility can be measured by its ability to shift and change according to its time period, the technologies that arise through the ages and the public’s shift in musical taste. The music industry is comprised of many different components, organizations and individuals that operate within it. Some of these components include the artists who compose the music themselves, the producers that engineer the sounds created by the artists, the companies that handle distribution and promotion of the recorded music, the broadcasters of the music such as radio
According to Jenkins ‘Convergence Culture: Where Old and New Media Collide’, It spectacles that the entertainment industry has taken the advantage of harnessing ‘New Media’ on traditional formats by focussing on the logistics and practices. This evidently helps to increase the popularity and the availability of audience participation through the use of updated technology. This is denoted through old technological formats via applying new interactive media to heighten the participation for numerous audiences. For instance, back in the day many industries i.e. entertainment had to depend on broadcasting and radio for the viewers to receive their audio or visual content. To do these industries had to send out signals globally through a large transmitter so that people can receive their content. Transmitting these signals
Information and entertainment today are usually spread through the development of technology. Due to this, various medias enable us to give and receive information. Media can be divided into traditional media and new media (Christian, 2014). While it is easy to pinpoint the differences of the two medias, there are also some similarities that tie both medias together.
Ever since the emergence of humans, the demand for amusement was prevalent and constantly evolving. From watching gladiators brawl in an arena, to attending operas and plays, to channel surfing, people have continually desired to be entertained. Today, there is another alteration that is changing the way people absorb the content that they want. Streaming, the most productive way to receive internet content, has skyrocketed in our society as the internet has become a “universal medium” (Carr 573). It started with Netflix, and then it was adapted by other platforms. More and more people have gravitated towards their phones and computers as outlets for entertainment and news instead of their televisions, causing traditional media to race to conform to the innovative technology (Carr 576-577) of streaming. For example, there are presidential debates that have been live streamed, and are said to be the most popular stream in internet history. Streaming has become a trend that has yet to lose momentum, and has consistently stayed at the top of the consumer food chain.
The influence of media on society in the 21st century is undeniable. Of all the types of media, music and books stand out as two of the main strands that influences people the most. They are both invaluable resources of knowledge and entertainment that can be accessed by all age groups. However, the most important aspect of music and books that has made them so prominent to the 21st century audience is that it offers a wide range of genres and styles. Consequently, Music and books have become the principal method of entertainment in the lives of many, as it bestows upon people the opportunity to free themselves from reality, and exist in their own fantasy worlds. By comparing and contrasting the impact of music and books, a superior
