There are many retail giants that have had an active presence on the market for sometime. A few that come to mind are JCPenny, Macy’s and Nordstorm’s. However, one major retail chain that has spread across the country was started right here in the state of Arkansas. Dillard’s first department store was opened in 1938 in Nashville, Arkansas by its founder William Dillard. Since its inauguration, Dillard’s has turned into one of the more prominent retailers in the United States. Walgreens prides itself on its diversity in the workplace. This is one of their core competencies. Since 2013 Walgreens has created an annual diversity and inclusion report that shows what they did that specific year that helped diversify their company. According to the report, in 2014 33% of the United States labor force was people of color while during that same time people of color made up 42.8% of Walgreens employees (“2014 Diversity,” n.d.). Walgreens also offers a disability inclusion report each year. At one of Walgreens distribution centers more than half of the employees have disabilities. With this center they have seen 120% increases in productivity so now they are expanding this model into retail locations (“2014 Diversity,” n.d.).

Jones Soda Company was founded by Canadian ski instructor Peter van Stolk. The soft drink company was not being sold alongside other larger reputed brands such as Coca Cola or Pepsi. Upon arrival, we waited in the queue for about 10 minutes, the weather was warm and we were all chatting therefore this time passed quickly. Once inside, we had to wait another 10 minutes at the bar in order to get a drink. The barmaid then messed up one of our orders, which meant another 10 minutes trying to get her attention to change it. This put us all in a bit of a bad mood as our night was just starting out and things already weren’t going smoothly, plus, we just wanted to get away from the crowded bar and wander around and have a dance. The barmaid however, was super apologetic and gave us a free shot each to compensate which meant she was completely forgiven as far as we were concerned!

Five years ago, I was a corporate trainer with plans to continue to my career in that area for the foreseeable future. I could not have envisioned the path that I am on back today in those days and my only goals were to be the best trainer I could be and perhaps move into training management. That all changed for me when I received a less-than-stellar mid-year review for reasons that felt very arbitrary and petty to me and still do today.
