Self Assessment and Human Behavior

In order for one to establish the importance of self evaluation/self assessment, first one must, to a certain extent, understand human behaviour. Behaviour, according to APA (2013) are “the actions or reactions of a person or animal in response to external or internal stimuli; conduct.”, so the same way we react or respond to events that take place around us, whether these are caused by nature or other people, so do others respond to our actions and words. Everything we do has an effect in the world around us. Clawson defines behaviour as “what people say, their gestures, their facial expressions, and their eye movements, as well as their major motor movements such as walking and running. When we see the behaviour of another, we reach conclusions about whether the person is behaving appropriately. In other words, the behaviour of others becomes an event for us.” Behaviour can be grouped into two categories; Social behaviour and Anti-social behaviour. The former being generally welcome by the community, the way in which one conducts oneself in conformity to social standards. However, as stated by Sheldon (2005) the latter represents the opposite end of the spectrum, mainly due to the fact that its unpleasant characteristics tend to infringe another individual’s rights not to be adversely affected in some sort of way.
