During this past semester in senior composition, I have learned how to properly write an essay. In the first semester of my senior year, I took creative writing with Mrs. Leese; I learned how to write stories and how to find books that I would actually like to read. That class got me to enjoy writing and when I found out this class was going to be all essays, I was not very ecstatic. In reality, I loved this class and everything I was taught in it because now I am able to use it for the better. In senior composition, I believe that my writing improved greatly because of the vocabulary I learned, the topics that I picked, and the punctuation/grammar I used. When my senior year started, one of the first things that I was introduced to was a website by the name of Membean. This website offers a way for students to actually learn vocabulary efficiently instead …show more content…
I not only picked my topic, but also I could go wherever I wanted with it. For example, I wanted to write about video games in my argumentative paper, but that is a very expansive project. I then was able to write an in-depth essay on something that I am very familiar with and something I am very passionate about. In “Loot Boxes: the Gateway to Gambling,” I wrote about a topic that I know a lot about, which made writing this paper that much easier to write and also a lot more fun for me. Another essay in which I wrote about a topic I loved was the book review. I wrote this essay on my favorite book of all time and it made it so much fun to write. Like I said in my essay “The Firm by John Grisham,” “I can assure that after reading the first couple pages of The Firm, the reader will be quickly captivated by the story (Burgess 2).” I was truly captivated by that book and writing a paper about it had me much more engaged in what I was doing. This made me a better writer because I was able to write about things I loved instead of things that I don’t care
English Composition I has developed my style of writing and my skills analyzing and researching topics to write a piece about a topic. Throughout the course, I got better at analyzing articles and pieces to get the meaning of the topic. With that improved skill I was more able to use the information given from the text and install it into my essays, with proper citation if needed. Before taking the English Composition course, I was not one to organize my essays in an ordeal order to clearly state the point of the work. Now with taking the course, I have learned to organize my essays, examine research for a topic, and develop an essay with proper mechanics, and revising skills. In writing my personal, review, analytical, and cultural
Starting college during high school was probably one of the best decisions I’ve made. I have learned so much being part of a college English class. Some weaknesses I had before in my writing turned into strengths because of this class. I also learned a lot about my interests and other weaknesses I never knew I had. One of my weaknesses, organization in writing, improved immensely. My improving organization made my papers more interesting and intriguing. My grammar and punctuation also improved due to the in-class quizzes we took every so often. My grades on essays increased greatly throughout time because of my strengthening skills on grammar and punctuation. The writing process was different for each essay, but it also improved. I became
As time went on, I had more and more teachers that tried helping me with my writing, but nothing was working. All the different methods that I was taught, never helped. It was not until I entered my junior and senior year of high school where I found two teachers that taught me how to make my essay structure better,
When I first started taking this class, I had a hard time writing my essays. The main reason I had a rough time was because the last time I had written an essay was in my freshman year of high school. I have improved on many things along the way. I now continue to improve even more. One major aspect that I have improved on is my revision process.
Reflecting back from the beginning of the semester, I can honestly say that I believed that I was already a really good writer. However, I have struggled with the thought of writing. Ever since I was little, I dreaded the thought of writing essays, but when it came down to get the job done I never struggled and always earned good grades. Up until around half way though this semester I still had this fear. I am thankful that this class has made me overcome the fear and thought of writing essays, even though when it was actually time for me to write them I did just fine. Throughout this semester I have mastered and learned the techniques of brainstorming, how to properly construct an outline, the different types of introductions, and much
First of all, in-class essays are generally quite difficult to write when compared to occasional papers because when you are at home typing your occasional paper you have all the resources in the world to assist you in writing your essay. By writing all of these essays and getting helpful feedback on each and every one of them my writing has vastly improved, in my opinion. Writing these various essays was a tedious task but, ultimately paid off in the end and has helped me in various ways. It has helped me improve my grade in this class and has helped in preparation for the ACT and SAT. I am not the greatest writer in the writer in the world but, I am also not the worst. I need to improve my writing and I know that not only because of my grades in this class but also from other sources. To specify my improvement, I believe that I have most improved specifically in my vocabulary. I knew before that my vocabulary was very weak and that was one of the major reasons my writing was not the greatest. After studying a lot of vocabulary and writing various essays, my vocabulary has naturally improved and assisted my
As a writer, especially as an international student, I should make extra efforts to write a good essay. In the class ESL273, I have learned how to write analytical essays with critical thinking, how to create an effective introduction with background information and a clear thesis statement, and how to organize an essay with the writing process skills, such as outlining and brainstorming. In addition, we have peer review activities in the class, which is a good opportunity for me to learn from my classmates and I can identify my writing weaknesses from the feedback. With all these writing skills that I learned from the ESL273 class, I think I have some strength in writing an essay because I am not a beginner anymore.
One whole semester has come and gone and have completed my first college writing class. Writing has always been a struggle of mine in school. I never thought my writing was good enough compared to the awesome essays from my peers. I would solely write to just complete the assignment instead of truly diving deep into the content I was writing about. However, from the beginning of this course I have been pushed to enhance my writing beyond the point of completing the assignment. I began to write for myself instead of writing for school. Throughout the past semester I have not only learned how to enhance my sentences and evidence in a meaningful way, but also how to add my own voice into the subject at hand.
This semester of Composition II, I was given even more opportunities to practice my writing and develop my own sense of style while incorporating correct grammar. Before this year, I didn’t know how to use sense imagery or dialogue well in my writing, and I hardly knew anything about grammar rules. But I have learned more about grammar in the past two semesters than I have in all my years of English classes.
I have learned that it isn’t as black and white as I once thought to write an essay. I was taught like I am sure most every other student was that there are certain rule to writing and you have to follow those rules no matter what. Not only were we told that but then we were grades and criticized or it. We have learned by example that we are wrong if we go a little bit outside the box when writing for a teacher. The articles I read today have made me feel a whole lot better about myself and my writing because it gives me more of a range to explore my abilities. Writing is a form of art to me and unfortunately it is hard to be told exactly what you have to write. Knowing that there are possibilities out there of learning as well as being creative
First off, I remember my first essay I wrote in high school was an essay, was an essay that I wrote about myself. It was supposed to help my teacher get to know us. That was one when I got my first taste of how awful my grammar really was. Sentence fragments, run-ons, punctuation, and parallel ideas are a huge struggle that I face, no matter how hard I try and how much I do I can’t seem to leave them all behind. I got that essay back, and I did not expect that it would come back scratched up with red ink. I really thought that it was an A essay, which I got a C on. My grammar got a little bit better that after that day, but it’s still a struggle. For example this is my second time taking freshmen comp, I took it once at Allen county community college, essay’s where the main reason that I did not pass that class, and my biggest struggle with those essays was the grammar and I know I have a long way to go but I want this class to be better.
I have had different writing experiences throughout high school so I was able to write my essays fairly well. I am better at grammar than I am at putting a fully developed paragraph together. During this semester, I learned about modifiers and how to correctly use commas; I thought I knew what those were pretty well, and as it turns out, I didn’t really. I believed that during this semester I developed a lot of skills such as communication. I struggled with the first group paper because I felt like my group members didn’t care enough to write their paragraphs. I realized that people write at different stages because they have busy lives, and after we figured out the situation, the second paper went a lot more smoothly. Another thing I have improved upon is being a thinker because I have to think of who the audience is, and how to phrase sentences correctly and professionally.
Before I started English 101 I had a pretty great foundation on how to write essays. I knew how to set up an essay and where to place certain things to grab my readers attention. I was in AP English since my 10th grade year and I had one of the best English teachers my 12th grade year. I believe my 12th grade year was when I really grew as a writer. My teacher would write all over our essays of ways to approve everything down to the smallest thing. Then she would spend a whole class day to give us a chance to ask questions about her comments. That really helped me to know that she would explain what we did wrong not just tell us it was wrong. On all my essays I had trouble summarizing too much, not giving enough detail and writing in past and present tense all in the essay. With the help from her I was able to go on and write essays for this class keeping in mind not to summarize every little detail, give more detail and pay close attention to whether it was past or present tense.
First and foremost, I have improved my writing skills by actually formulating an essay writing process by which I can follow to effectively finish my essays in incremental steps rather than all at one time. In this way, I stopped getting paralyzed by anxiety at the immense task ahead of me, i.e. writing a whole paper in one sitting; instead, by breaking my writing process into smaller steps, I was able to focus on one
When I enrolled in English 330, Writing in Education, I was apprehensive. Over the years, proofreading has been one of my strengths which may be a great attribute, but the challenging part has already been accomplished, writing the paper. So, although I absolutely love to research and write about my findings, I have always found it to be a struggle writing essays. The words seem to come easy in my head, but when the time came to write or type those words into sentences was the most difficult. Even though I have endured difficulties and challenges this semester, I have given 100% into each assignment. The discussions, blogs, letters, emails and assorted categories of papers completed, they have all proven to me that, no matter how good you felt you did, there is definitely room for improvement. There is always room for improvement, whether the task is a school assignment or work done on daily basis for over twenty-five years. My writing skills, my thought process and analytical skills have all improved in the last eight weeks.
