Brittany Travis Ms. Jones English Period 7 18 April 2017 Narrative 2 During the first part of my senior project hours I explained that I was learning about how a business works. I also expressed what I needed to accomplish and challenges that I’d faced within the hours of volunteering. Although the challenges that I faced I still had problems but, I did accomplish taking pictures of the new and old offices at Living Opportunities. The further steps that were involved with finishing my project hours were setting up another time during the summer to complete them. Also using the Living Opportunities time card to track the time spent in the office. The further steps that are needed to finish my project is making a power point based on what I did. …show more content…
The second success that I achieved was getting out of my comfort zone and being out going by the end of the hours. The majority of my project was learning about how a nonprofit business works. One immense issue that I learned while being a volunteer is that it takes a good deal of math to have a business. One huge project that I had to do was billing as said in the previous paragraphs. This pertains to using a special calculator and using the right information listed. I did not do this alone, I had help from my mentor to explain the parts that I did not understand fully but, consequently she did not give me instructions on how to do each project given. However learning how a business works, it gave me some employee skills that I can use in the adult world. The employee skills I learned were how to listen closely to instructions. If I did not listen clearly this could have ruined the paperwork that was worked on while in the office. Another employee skill that was taught was communication. This was meant to teach me that talking to employees gives them the information that they need to know if I were to give them a message. In the end, I learned about the basis of a business and how it
During my volunteer hours I learned a lot about my own community I that I have not been able to experience. For example I have never been able to participate in so many writing programs and workshops in my local high school, this is because I also did not attend my own local high school because my mother did not allow me to instead, she asked me to attend a charter school. By partnering with LA826, I was able to attend different writing workshops where I would help different high school student write essay, cover letters, and personal statements. Furthermore I believed that most of my activities consisted of just being able to listen to some of the students.
My first year in the society, I stayed in the background, meaning I just went to the meetings and the community service opportunities. After a year of doing this, I decided that it was not enough. In my junior year of high school, I wanted to do more with my experience. I ran for presidency of my school chapter, and I was elected the first time around. With this authority I started a special community service project, peer tutoring. This idea was accepted and was soon brought to the student body and adopted into the school
It is said that “Time and Tide waits for none”. As an upcoming college freshman I need to understand the value of time to succeed in life. I have to understand that everything needs to be prioritized no matter the case. That being able to manage my time correctly will teach me discipline which is exactly what I need to get through college with the goals I have set for myself. Individuals who stick to a time plan are more likely the people who realize their goals and objectives within the shortest possible time span. This will help me get my work done before the deadline instead of working on it the night before.
At the beginning of my senior year, I committed myself to additional volunteer works. These volunteer activities require leadership skills that I have learned previously. Some of these activities include:
When I began my Civics class, thinking it potentially difficult and boring, I did not initially look forward to this project. However, as I did each activity, I found myself enjoying each and every one. From sitting in a board meeting to collecting trash, I discovered something new in all of the ways I volunteered. Not only did the people I volunteered for gain something through my service, but I feel that I gained a lot as well.
I knew my transition from an ordinary visitor to a volunteer would be a new and exciting experience. My task in the Summer Reading Program was to register patrons, explain how the program works, and give out prizes at the end of each week. The number of children who registered for the program impressed me. I enjoyed working with these children, since I knew exactly where they got their excitement from. I would look forward to seeing the smiling faces of the children as they received their prizes. Their faces made me reminisce about the joyful moments I had as a child when I couldn't wait for the grand prize week of the Summer Reading Program.
Volunteer work is essential for every individual’s life and future careers, it produces a path to connections in the work force, and promotes on the job learning. My practicum work pairing with the National Civil War and Medicine Museums was an amazing, educational 20 hours. Even though I was only there for 20 hours, it was a taste of what I will be tackling in my internship next semester there. I volunteered for four days, and over those days I had a total of four projects. All of the project were different, the first was looking up collection software and plugins, then I took inventory on a case, then I recorded notes on a surgeon’s diary, and finally I described each medicine in a pannier box. All of the people I worked with were immensely friendly and insightful, whenever I had questions they were content to help answer them. The overall experience was tremendously insightful, however, there was a few bumps in the road here and there. This practicum was a great experience that makes me eager for my internship in January.
The theme of Catholic Social Teaching my service was under was “Call to Family, Community, and Participation.” For most of my service hours I ran volleyball camp at school, and I also ran concessions. This falls under “Call to Family, Community, and Participation” because it helps individuals grow not only in a sport but also a community. As they are participating and learning new skills they are also learning life lessons and making friends.
On Monday, we continue to do the floor stretches which it helps me a lot because I feel that I am stretched well enough to do anything. After the stretches we all went to the side to practice pique turns. I kept spotting the whole time, so I won’t get dizzy when I was turning. We also tried our right and left leaps across the room. Then we tried the open side leap in which I master, but I still have to bring it higher like the rest of my classmates.
Imagine, your right arm is trapped under an 800 pound boulder, no way of escape, with little food or water. No one knows where you are. What do you do? Fight for survival or give up? This is the reality of Aron Ralston on April 26, 2003.
Senior project is an amazing experience for everyone who is fortunate enough to complete one. It allows us to attempt things we never would have otherwise and take a step out of our comfort zone. The most amazing thing about senior project is that it is designed to challenge students and help set us up for more in the future. It has the ability to give students a whole new perspective on their topics while also building an appreciation towards it. This is the general consensus I have gathered about senior project since I began.
For the Service Learning Assignment, I decided to volunteer at Northwind Rehabilitation and Health Care Center. My current interest is working in the medical field that deals with babies. The service learning placement that best fit my schedule was Northwind Rehabilitation and Health Care Center. This organization works with mostly senior citizens that need special care at all times. There were times where individuals that were not senior citizens that came there because it is not strictly a nursing home. The residents are not able to care for themselves and need constant supervision to ensure their safety. Some of the resident may require physical therapy. My responsibilities was to interact with the different residents on each visit and complete
Three hours. Three long hours of driving is a long time when you are a little kid, who is always anxious to move around and release energy. The final road has arrived, one long dirt road snaking through the woods. Every year the familiar bumps in the road rattle the car as we make our way to the driveway of our cottage. Years have passed now and the outside does not look as run down as it used to, due to multiple improvements. Because I was that little kid, the need to jump out of the car and run around and stretch became a must. Jumping out of that car I remember exactly how the dark wood of the cottage seemed to melt into the woods when the sun went down. The scenery symbolized the first night of the family vacation. Even though I know the
Although the documentation of my senior project hours is complete, the knowledge that I gained and the experience are unmatched. The agreed project was to create an organization system for our metal shop tool room. I have been working on project since october starting with the design of a storage shelf and I have painted our tool room. I have reached thirty hours and I have more to go. I most likely have four-six hours left.
In every high school, there is one main project senior year that has a dramatic effect on your grade. It was my Senior Research Project and it counted for about 20% of my grade. This research project relies heavily on technology not only for the information, but the overall presentation. The final product was supposed to be around 10 pages of writing and a 20 page PowerPoint presentation. I also had a video to show the class and a lot of my notes were on the computer in which I would base my presentation topic points on. It is a pretty big event where the parents show up as well as multiple teachers and classmates. The night of the event, I sat through a couple of my friends’ presentations and afterward headed over to my assigned classroom
