Introduction:
One often hears the phrase, “sex sells” when it comes to advertising. This is when advertising is the uses a sexually provocative or erotic imagery (or sounds, suggestions, and subliminal messages) that are specifically designed to arouse interest in a particular product, service or brand. Typically, sex refers to beautiful women and progressively handsome men are used to lure in a viewer, reader or listener, despite a weak a non-existent link to the brand being advertised. If a men is physically fit and is shirtless, many women are going to stop and take a look at the photo, despite not knowing what they are trying to sell.
Using sexuality to help sell products has been used for many years in advertising. And the industry, while abusing it more and more, would be foolish to ignore the draw of sexual and erotic messaging. Sexual exploitation has exploded out of proportion in today’s society because of the constant access to social media. Women are the ones who have been taking the sexual abuse for years. Women are more sexualized than men are when it comes to the media. Women see other women in magazines that are highly sexualized and physically altered to look better, and then they get unrealistic exactions on how they should be living their lives.

In advertising, there is an attempt to see empowerment trying to be displayed, but in reality there is women are often displayed as actively seeking and enjoying sex as a way to sell products, not because they are fulfilling sexual empowerment. These advertisements are not trying to help men and women, but rather set a standard of sexuality. However, these images are used for business because sex sells. Jean Kilbourne’s essay Two Ways a Woman Can Get Hurt is a powerful piece of work that brings the problems of the sexualization and objectification of women and children in advertising out in the open. Kilbourne states that this pornographic advertising is promoting male dominance over women, and in return promoting male violence against women. Domestic abuse and violence against women have always been a problem, but the media may be making it worse. Her audience is middle-aged and younger women who are most likely to experience male violence. In society, women are held to a very high social standard. The pressure to look as perfect as all the models in magazines have driven many girls to an impossible fixation. Not only is it seen as a social norm, but also people do not even realize the degrading images of women in our everyday surroundings. After watching “Killing Us Softly”, this ideal was brought to my attention more that almost every advertisement piece that involves women promotes sexualization, objectification, and reinforces the feminine gender roles in America.
