Earlier this month, Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) sent a letter to U.S. Soccer President Sunil Gulati urging him to remove starting goalkeeper Hope Solo from Team USA due to her alleged domestic violence episode. U.S. Soccer has allowed Solo to play for Team USA without handing her any disciplinary action related to the incident. Sunil Gulati and U.S. Soccer need to send the right message to young fans, do the right thing and suspend Hope Solo immediately for her violent actions. U.S. Soccer is putting the sport's interests first instead of doing the right thing, ethically. On June 21, 2014, Solo was arrested on two counts of fourth-degree domestic violence by the Kirkland, Washington police department, in connection with an altercation …show more content…
Soccer stands out among other sports organizations for its inaction on domestic violence committed by one of its players. On April 22, 2015 WNBA players Brittney Griner and Glory Johnson, who were engaged at the time, were arrested after fighting at their house. They each received a record seven-game suspension without pay as punishment from the WNBA. In another domestic violence incident, Ray Rice, who was a celebrated player for the Baltimore Ravens, was handed a two-game suspension by the NFL after reports that he had punched his then fiancé in the face. Many considered that punishment to be ridiculously mild. However, when video of the punch appeared by TMZ after the NFL had strengthened its domestic violence policy, it led the Ravens to release Rice and the NFL to suspend him indefinitely. The new NFL policy imposes a six-game unpaid ban for first-time offenders and up to a lifetime ban for second-time offenders of domestic violence. In NASCAR, driver Kurt Busch was suspended indefinitely on February 20, 2015 after a judge ruled that Busch committed domestic abuse against his former girlfriend Patricia Driscoll. In a statement afterwards, NASCAR Vice President Steve O'Donnell said, "NASCAR has made it very clear to our entire membership and the broader industry that any actions of abuse will not be tolerated in the
Solo was born on July 30, 1981 in Richland, Washington. Her childhood was far from simple; her father was in and out of her life, as well as in and out of prison, and had stolen money from her mother on multiple occasions. In Solo’s own words “he was unreliable at best and a criminal at worst” (p. 44). Despite his erratic behavior, Jeffrey Solo was an important person in Hope’s life, particularly in her soccer career, right up until his sudden death in 2007. While Solo is widely recognized as the face of women’s goalkeeping in the US, many people don’t know she was a forward for most of her life growing up, and a prolific a goal scorer on top of it. She began playing goalie for her Olympic Development Program (ODP) team an older team selected her as their backup keeper. Throughout her teenage
If Rice was convicted, he would face up to five years in jail rather than a fine. Two months after his incident, Rice was accepted into a pretrial intervention program focused on rehabilitation (Elliott). As a result, Rice’s case never went to trial, and his aggravated assault charge would be dropped if he completed the program. Rice was originally suspended for two games without pay and fined $58,000 because of his aggravated assault charge but then he was suspended for six games due to the NFL’s policy on assault, battery, domestic violence and sexual assault (Elliott). Ray Rice will likely never play another game in an NFL uniform because of the fact that he was caught on camera abusing his wife (Tyler).
As an avid sports fan I have been highly troubled by the recent headlines to plague the NFL in recent months. It seems as if every week a new player is being accused of domestic violence. In the past these accusations have seemingly gone unnoticed as the player gets punished behind the scenes and continues playing the game we love to watch. However, now as the league is taking the horrific issue of domestic violence far more seriously we are starting to see just how prevalent it is in the NFL. While this is a significant step in creating more awareness for the issues of domestic violence, Rex W. Huppke wants people to realize how prevalent domestic violence is not just in the NFL, but everywhere,
Every day, I would learn about legal research from the law clerks and watch judges preside over civil cases, but more importantly, every morning I had the opportunity to talk with The Honorable Philip Tirabassi. Judge Tirabassi’s absolute favorite thing to talk about was soccer. He would go on and on quizzing one of the law clerks about the Premier League, talking about how he used to play when he was younger, or telling me about the team that he coached right now. Even through his successes in his legal career, Judge Tirabassi continued to embrace and grow this other love. The kind of balance that he has achieved in his career and personal life inspires me to continue to embrace my love of field hockey- to use it both to make myself happy and to give back to my community- as I continue to pursue my education.
Professional sports have been in the news for domestic violence for a really long time. Some that may come to your mind could be Ray Rice, Warren Moon, Greg Hardy, and Jose Reyes. Yes, three of these four players are in the National Football League (NFL), but that does not mean that only football players are the ones who have been doing this. The most recent one is Jose Reyes who plays in Major League Baseball (MLB). That is really ones opinion, but some don’t have anything but I slap on the wrist. Commissioners around these leagues usually suspend the player for a couple games until all of the details and videos come out. Ray Rice was suspended two games until they saw evidence then he was suspended for the whole year. Some wanted him banned
Regarding the Dewan Smith-Williams case they’re goal to me is to protect the brand and not to protect the husband from himself and his high risk behavior to his wife and family because they didn’t want her to go to the police and keep it silent. I think Mrs. Williams made the right call to come forth and let it be known that spouses and/or partners are being treated unfair and something needs to be done. In my opinion, maybe if fans, anti-violence groups and women’s rights organizations get together and organize a plan that could force the owners to enact stronger and lasting reforms to improve the NFL actions and response to domestic abuse. They should make some amendments to the personal conduct policy. This topic relates to the discussion on human behavior because we want to know what causes the domestic abuse from the spouse especially if the abuser is in the NFL, a super star, and fame is growing and so forth. Find out what area of treatment and theory practice could be used to help the
media scrutiny, especially since swift and proper action against Rice did not happen until after the footage was released. They have changed their policy to a six game suspension for a first offense, although offense is not defined and is open for interpretation in the policy. There are still football players who continue to play despite legal action against them in domestic violence disputes.
Many fans also believed that the six - game suspension was much too harsh, since there are only sixteen games in an NFL season, and the witnesses had not backed up the woman’s claims. However, investigators confirmed that the images of the woman’s injuries were consistent with her story, and also looked into another incident involving Elliott: this March during a St. Patrick’s Day parade, he pulled a woman’s top down, prompting the NFL to send Elliott a letter, reprimanding him and saying he showed a lack of respect for women. Clearly, Elliott has a history of improper and inappropriate behavior. The NFL really wanted to have all the facts on this case due to criticism of the handling of previous domestic violence cases. For example, in 2015 former Giants kicker Josh Brown was arrested for a misdemeanor domestic violence charge and was only suspended for one game. However, it was later discovered that Brown had sorrowfully admitted in journals and letters to friends and family how he had abused his wife, who had previously refused to speak with NFL officials. Due to this lack of initial evidence, the NFL had been heavily criticized for giving a quick one - game
On February 19th, 2014, a video of Ray Rice, the running back of the Baltimore Ravens, was released in which he was seen dragging the body of his limp fiancee out of a casino elevator. After being arrested and spending a year in a pretrial intervention program, Ray Rice was suspended for only 2 games. However, shortly after this, the NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, changed the domestic violence policy of the NFL, making it so that first time offenders would receive a 6 game suspension, and second time offenders would be banned for life. Then, on September 9th, another video was released of Rice punching his fiancee in the head and knocking her unconscious. In response to this, the Ravens terminated Rice’s contract and the NFL suspended him
In the article”NFL Apologize to Women for Ray Rice” Roxanne Jones who was the former Vice President of the NFL and national lecturer on sports , is trying to convince others that the domestic violence act Ray Rice committed against his former fiancé Janay Palmer was a more severe act than he was held accountable for. She is addressing an argument to Roger Goodell , the NFL commissioner ,that Rices’ suspension from playing football should have been longer than just two games. Jones believes the suspension what unjustified because Rice was seen on camera dragging Palmer who was unconscious at the time out of a casino elevator. Jones compares this domestic violence act to an animal abuse crime, which occurred
According to the article, can NFL players being aggressive on the field interact with their personal life? For example, “Adrian Peterson was charged with felony child abuse, for using a wooden switch to discipline his four year old son”. As stated in the article, former NFL player Ray Rice the running back for the Baltimore Ravens was charged with domestic violence but he pleaded not guilty and the charges were dropped. No one is excusing the unconscionable behavior of the Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice and the Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson.
In February 2015, a video of Ray Rice, the “face of the Baltimore Ravens,” beating his then-fiancée unconscious in a hotel elevator went viral. Following his arrest and indictment on aggravated assault charges, he entered a pre-trial program for first offenders, usually intended for perpetrators of “victimless” crimes. Suspended from play indefinitely, Rice won an appeal to the NFL, and was reinstated, available for hiring should any team be willing to go near him.
Domestic Violence is defined as a pattern of behavior which involves violence or other abuse by one person in a domestic context against another, such as in marriage or cohabitation. In the game of football there are many grueling parts involved. From the hard hits that players deliver or take, to the pressure that players are under to perform at a high level. From the highs of winning super bowls and getting drafted, to the lows of season-ending injuries and having one win seasons. Football is a game that involves a lot of physical and mental toughness, and on top of that they have to have the ability to be able to go home and support a family and have a social life, or whatever the case may be. It’s a lot on their plate. Maybe some players just cannot handle all of it. Maybe they had a bad game and it’s still on their mind when they get home, their loved one may say something that just hits them wrong and that player takes it out on them. Maybe the nature of the game stays with them when they get home and they unleash on their wife or girlfriend. Maybe some cases are truly
Footage was later released by TMZ of Rice half-dragging, half-lifting Palmer’s body from the elevator, having been seemingly knocked unconscious. After being indicted in March for aggravated assault and entering a pre-trial anger management program in May, Ray and his now wife Janay Rice hold a news conference during which they apologize for their equal roles in the incident. By this time, the NFL had still not gotten involved in the case, and when Rice finally meets with Commissioner Goodell, the final punishment comes as a mere two-game suspension. With the story thought to be over, more footage of Rice visibly striking his wife in the face and knocking her unconscious surfaces, thanks again to TMZ. This sparks another round of events in the case, with Rice abruptly being released by the Baltimore Ravens and indefinitely suspended from the NFL in September. Rice enters the appeal process against his suspension, the major point being that he fully disclosed the nature and order of events to Goodell and other important parties. His appeal lasts into late November, when he is reinstated into the NFL and made able to join another team.
The 2016 Summer Olympics seemed to have more controversy than we have had in previous Olympics. The talent has risen and the US was dominating the competition in gold medals. However, the one team that has continuously won gold, fell to the occasion this year. The US women’s soccer team faced Sweden in the quarterfinals and suffered a tough loss on a penalty kick. The team was devastated and during an interview following the game, the team’s goalie, Hope Solo, said inappropriate remarks about the opposing team. Solo’s blunt personality has gotten her into trouble in the past, but this time she wouldn’t be given a second chance. In Jonathan Mahler’s article, “Hope Solo’s Behavior, and Play, Spells End With US Team” from the August 25, 2016
