“Just as we teach our children how to ride a bike, we need to teach them how to navigate social media and make the right moves that will help them. The physical world is similar to the virtual world in many cases. It 's about being aware. We can prevent many debacles if we 're educated” (Amy Jo Martin). Social media sites are changing the way people and organizations communicate. Today we have Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, Instagram, Vine, Tumblr, Flicker, and various other social media sites. Social Networking is used to stay connected with friends and family to share and express what matters to the user. Some networking sites are used to connect with other business and to find people near you. Facebook has 968 million daily active …show more content…
Each social media has their own data policy that helps users understand what is shared publically. When you first set up a Facebook account it is open for the public to see, it is up to the user to go into the account settings and change the settings for privacy. Information that is shared when you open an account can include location a photo was taken, the date a file was created, content you view, shared photos, post you create, along with payment information if you use their programs (Facebook). Facebook has a system where it will recognize your face to help your friends tag you in pictures faster. While American adults are concerned about how the government and corporations are collecting data about citizens and consumers, teenagers are freely giving up their personal and private information online. If you Google yourself today what information would you find? Do you think your information is private? These are two questions I asked a co-worker at work, she said she has all of her privacy settings on her Facebook, that none of her information is able to see. With her permission to both search and write about what I found, I was able to prove to her that the privacy settings were not as private as she thought. Within five minutes of searching her name I was able to find the fallowing information on her; City and State she was from, birthday, email address, family members, pictures from 2013 to today, status post, graduation information, and even her full
Moving forward, social media has been a major convenience and reward to virtually everyone. On an individual basis, social media allows friends and family both near and far to communicate with one another. Also, businesses are flourishing through the use of social media. Advertising has never been easier. Horn (2013) states, “Our profession, unlike any time before, is demanding we become social media (…) experts” (1). Horn (2013) also states, “More than half of reporters (55 percent) use Twitter and Facebook to source stories” (1). Social media has greatly benefited business life and personal life.
It’s hard to believe, that only a decade ago social media took off and became the new trend. Of course, there was Friendster and Myspace that had been around for a few years but most of the world’s population hadn’t come around to it yet. Nowadays, social media has taken over our lives. It has influenced every decision we have made in life in one way or another.
The world around us is constantly evolving due to the increased emphasis on social media. Around the world, billions of us use social media every day, and that number just keeps growing. As a young adult, we usually imagine social media as being our virtual way to connect to individuals across the world through Instagram, Facebook, and even Snapchat. These three sources of media along with a vast amount of many others bring humor and entertainment to our daily lives. Our growing appreciation for Social media is redefining the global landscape. It affects how we communicate with individuals, how we keep up to date with the latest news, and how businesses and brands now operate. there is much more to the world of social media that we have not
In this day and age, social media has become an integral part of our lives. It has created a platform for people to share information instantly and communicate with people all around the world. Facebook is the most outstanding example of successful social media network. According to the first quarter 2015 earnings announcement by Facebook, the site has achieved 1.44 billion active users per month, and 65% of which are daily active users. Other social networking sites such as Twitter, Instagram and LinkedIn are also a powerful means of communication. With such a large audience, social networking sites provide ample opportunities to acquire information, network, and connect with friends.
Social media has become a primary source of communication in the 21st century. Twitter Facebook, and Instagram are all social networks commonly used to communicate and associate with relatives and peers, as well as professional colleagues. While communication on social networks may often be casual, frequently it is used for formal deliberation and sharing of new ideas and perspectives. Facebook, with over 1.55 billion monthly users (http://newsroom.fb.com/company-info/), is one of the most widely used social networks in the world. Facebook users range from students and farmers to politicians and celebrities; consequently, a wide range of perspectives are shared and
“Social media allows people to connect with each other to create and share information. It is people-powered communication, an authentic dialogue motivated by a basic human desire to share information” (CIPD, Social Media and Employee Voice Report 2013). ‘Click’ and my message is on its way to my friend’s Facebook inbox hundred of miles away. The astonishing speed of how quick we can communicate in today’s societies, all thanks to social media. The invention of Facebook simplified everything we know about communication. We can connect to people whenever and wherever, sharing information has never been more convenient and exciting. In Shane Hipps’ Article, “ Is Facebook Killing Our Souls?,” he has no intention to impede technological advancements, instead he wants users to understand technologies with insights. According to my research, although Hipps ' points has some merits, I disagree with him because he overgeneralized the impacts that Facebook and other social media has on users’ behaviors and identities.
Social networking sites vary in the levels of privacy offered. For some social networking sites like Facebook, providing real names and other personal information is encouraged by the site(onto a page known as a ‘Profile‘). These information usually consist of birth date, current address, and telephone number(s). Some sites also allow users to provide more information about themselves such as interests, hobbies, favorite books or films, and even relationship status. However, there are other social network sites, such as Match.com, where most people prefer to be anonymous. Thus, linking users to their real identity can sometimes be rather difficult. Nevertheless, individuals can
In less than two decades, social media has revolutionized modern communication and information sharing. What began as a simple form of social networking has turned into innumerable platforms for people around the globe to share ideas, create and share businesses, promote brands, read news from various sources, as well as share and find vast amounts of information, among many other uses. Thus, with a few clicks of a button, people are now able to interact with someone on the other side of the world. The capabilities created through social media’s many uses have forever changed global politics, business, and interpersonal communication.
Facebook, Twitter, Google Plus, LinkedIn, and Instagram, are extremely popular social media sites found on the internet. None of these sites would have emerged had it not been for the development of the computer, and then, the internet. Today, thanks largely to the internet, communicating globally have become very simple. Gone are the days when people sent letters by post, or in case of emergencies, used the telephone or telegraphs. International costs were very expensive to begin with, and telegrams couldn’t accommodate a large volume of information. Letters would take days to reach a recipient, and even more days for a reply to reach the sender. Therefore, when the computer and the internet came into being, it helped people communicate with their family, friends, and business associates much faster through emails. It’s not that emails are not used today; they remain a very popular, and important means of communication, but with the arrival of social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter, Google Plus, LinkedIn, and Instagram, the way people think and communicate has changed the whole meaning of human interaction. By allowing their registered users to network, these social media sites enhance reach and connectivity with people from around the world. It is because of this that organizations have become active on these sites. It doesn’t only enhance business reach, but it
Privacy is often defined as freedom from the observation, intrusion, or attention of others. If that was taken away from daily life the world would become a collection of omniscient beings that walk around with potentially harmful information about those surrounding them. Stalking would be unnecessary because the internet would do all for the work for us. Social networking sites are creating many such concerns. One of the most widely known social networking sites is Facebook. When reviewing Facebook’s privacy policy, you may want to keep in mind that “an examination of Facebook's privacy policy shows that the informedchoicemodel is completely unrealistic” (Grimmelmann).Facebook not only helps our friends learn more about our daily life,
In recent years the world has witnessed the rapid acceleration of a new class of information technologies, commonly known as social media. Social media supports interpersonal communication and collaboration through the use of internet-based platforms. Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, and Instagram are some of the well-known sites that are used by hundreds of millions of people. Although only 18 percent of managers believe that social media is important for their business today, more than 63 percent assert that they will be important for business within three years (Kiron et al. 2012). The economic impact of social media on business could exceed $1 trillion, most of which is gained from more efficient communication and collaboration within and across organizations (Chui et al. 2012). Many managerial challenges associated with applications of social media are consistent with those long recognized by the IS discipline (Kane et al. 2010). These new tools also provide users, managers, and developers with capabilities that allow them to act and interact with each other in ways that were difficult or were impossible to do in earlier online or offline settings. These novel capabilities may undermine or violate the assumptions of established theory, potentially requiring researchers to adapt theories for application to social media settings or possibly develop new ones (Majchrzak 2009).
Social networking has never been more popular, with social tools accounting for 20 percent of all online activity, per ComScore (Laudon & Laudon, 2016, p. 65). Many of today’s employees are already well versed in the basics of public social networking using tools such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram (Laudon & Laudon, 2016, p. 65). Social media is the next wave of the digital transformation that started with the web (Holmes, 2015). Social media has already profoundly altered the way individuals communicate with one another and is changing how businesses communicate with customers. In fact, three-quarters of online adults in the U.S. now use social media sites (Holmes, 2015). Social media, like it or not,
What do about ninety percent of us have in common? It’s the social networking sites that everyone is a part of these days, whether it’s your twelve year old nephew or your grandmother. Spending hours and hours connecting with your old friends and making new friends over the social networking sites has become a part of everyone’s daily routine. Nonetheless, recently privacy concerns over the social networking sites have taken its peak.
Social media is taking over the world. It is a way to interact with people over the internet. Social media has brought people from around the world together and is a way to stay in touch with people who you might not see often and understand their life. Social media websites such as Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter are the new trend of communication and are the fastest growing resources for meeting people, keeping people updated, and connecting with friends and family. Employers can even browse social media sites to make choices about employees by viewing their personal connections with others. Social media is impacting the way our culture interacts. It has opened a broad spectrum of ways for people to fulfill basic and complex communicative needs.
Since 2004, Facebook has changed the face of social media altogether. Facebook was originally designed for the average student to stay connected to other college students within the area. After years of growth, the social media platform has completely transformed into a space parents and even grandparents can navigate with ease. Because there are so many people within the site, there is room for problems to arise within everyday use. Facebook has made it so that users can change and maintain their privacy settings, however friends can tag one another in photos, which their friends can see and find you by a click of a button. This questions the level of safety that Facebook has. Although Facebook is a fun way to stay connected
