In 2002, Friendster.com was created and was an instant hit among the teens as it offered very unique features. The company was growing at a rapid pace and it became difficult for them to maintain their servers and hence turned out to be failure. In 2004, Facebook was founded which later became the king of social networks. After the rise of Facebook, social media became a platform for the people to discuss about social and cultural issues.

Social networking makes keeping in touch with a vast circle of friends easier. Anyone can send personal emails and letters to individuals, or post a simple message for everyone to see at once. They can let everyone know where they are, what they’re doing and how they’re feeling, and it only takes a few seconds.
Since the launch of Myspace in 2003, the internet landscape has never been the same. Mirriam-Webster defines social media as “forms of electronic communication (such as websites for social networking and microblogging) through which users create online communities to share information, ideas, personal messages, and other content (such as videos)” (Social Media, n.d.). Myspace was arguably the first significant social media platform, and it allowed users to share text, photos, videos, and web links. It did not take long for companies to join the new platform. Before long, companies were engaging with their market and communicating directly with their users.
Since MySpace proved to be such a great promotional asset, the first users did not hesitate to invite everyone they knew to join the site as only beneficial outcomes could come from having more friends on the website. Building off the original idea of combining other networking services into one product, DeWolfe and Anderson made sure that there were hardly any restrictions on what members of MySpace could post on their own pages. This strategy allowed users to post whatever they wanted which gave them a lot more freedom than the rival website at the time, Friendster, which only allowed content that was related to Internet dating. The freedom to post whatever one wanted was the main reason why MySpace was able to grow as large as it did because all of the general public was invited to join the MySpace community. DeWolfe and Anderson recognized that people could only communicate on Friendster if they were searching for a relationship so they created a platform where anybody could communicate about anything that they felt to be important.
MySpace became popular when famous bands or singers used the web site to update their own news (concert dates, new songs, new clip etc…). The creation of these kinds of networks has affected today’s word in many things. Firstly, this has never been as fast as today to find old friends. The contact is easier and you don’t have to talk with them to know what they are now. You only have to look at their profiles, photos and status. The number of information has also never been as big as today. In fact users inform people in publishing their relationship, their favorite games, what they are doing right now and more precisely their daily life. Usually, people are trying to publish the best profile with the best photos, and
Social networking was not an aspect of life that appeared interesting to the average person before the early 2000s. This was because everyday people were still adapting to their first computer. Before the early 2000s, there was not a social networking website that had popularity to the extent of having a large amount of users. Though the idea for a social networking platform was in existence, those who helped advance technology did not have the tools needed to build a platform that would attract a range of people. A complication to such an idea was presented in 1999. During the late ‘90s, there was a scare known as “Y2K” which contributed to a panic for computer users. As the year 2000 approached, computer specialists feared that computer programs storing two-digit values would cause issues and cause computers to crash
