My group collectively decided to observe the Sooner Race Team for our co-culture project. I chose to interview a 26 year old male member from McLoud, Oklahoma pursuing his second degree in Mechanical Engineering. Working closely with cars prior to joining, he quickly assumed the role as the most proficient welder on the team. Having received his first degree from Oklahoma City Community College in Automotive Technology, his expertise grants him the opportunity to teach inexperienced members how to effectively weld. However, nearing the end of his second year on the Sooner Race Team, his official title is Powertrain manager. As Powertrain manager, he oversees the production and composition of the components that generate power for the vehicle …show more content…
Rawl Engineering Practice facility serves as a second home for most of the members of the team. This co-culture utilizes the first floor for car construction and the basement for almost everything else. In a technology driven society, various forms of social media, email, messaging applications and smart phones have become an increasingly popular means of communication amongst co-cultures. However, due to the amount of time spent at the engineering facility, communication between Sooner Race Team members occurs primarily in person. The member I interviewed also noted a messaging application called “Slack” as their second most used form of communication because it allows them to upload and share files. He also described difficulties getting together outside of the engineering facility besides sharing meals because of how much time they all spend …show more content…
Additionally, this co-culture provides the opportunity for its members to experience the feeling of community. Furthermore, active team membership enables the development of a sense of an identity on campus. A cohesive team by nature, the group aims to effectively assimilate new members into their co-culture through a welcoming and positive environment. Throughout the interview, this member frequently referred to the team as his closest friends and family. The member noted that due to differing schedules not all members can spend equal time together during the week, but try to spend time together on the weekend during their build day. When the team is not designing or building, they spend time doing homework together in the basement of the Engineering Practice Facility or bonding over meals. Without the Sooner Race team, this member says he would have more time to devote to school and could have a job to help support himself but refuses to quit because of his “passion for the team”. When asked what keeps him going during stressful times he said, “I keep going because I could not imagine myself doing anything
When they share things together, what they are sharing is what is on their phones.” (pg.6). I’ve been in this exact situation in the very lunchroom of Silver Creek High. Most lunches, my friends and I talk and share face-to-face things, but some days just don’t work out that way. You’re sitting with your friends at the table, you’re just sitting in the silence that is technology.
Nowadays, the communications with others are different from the traditional ways and normal rules. People take advantage of new technology to communicate instead of face to face. Although the email and text message make people easy to communicate, the society
Using texting as a quicker and more efficient form of communication takes the emotional connection out of the equation. It allows us to not be physically near the recipient or to take responsibility for miscommunications that lead to hurt feelings. While texting, students do not need to make eye contact with their recipient or learn to read their body language. In addition, there is no need to learn the art of persuasive argument or exchanging and building on ideas. This is not only harming students in the classroom, but can have negative effects when entering the workforce. After leaving college, students hope to land a job in their field of expertise. In the workforce, teams are a diverse collection of persons – all ages and different cultures. Texting may be acceptable in some situations, but there is still a great need for face to face interactions. We learn how to become more comfortable meeting new people and interviewing for jobs. There is nothing wrong the light banter between friends that texting can provide, but the conversation is not necessarily deep.
She writes, “We are now in constant and continuous communication with our friends, co-workers and family over the course of a day” (Wortham 394). Even though the author’s partner lived more than 3,000 miles away, she used apps like: Google’s instant-messaging application, Gchat and others in order to correspond by voice and video that made her and other people feel close even though it’s over the screen. Physical communication is the most effective way to engage with individuals, as people are able to feel and visualize the presence of real emotions, but having a app like the one mentioned by the author, but if it’s not possible to communicate that way, communicating through the screen will fill the
Often, cohesion is viewed from an affective perspective; as interpersonal attraction among members or to the group. However, cohesion can also be envisioned as "attraction to a collectivity" as opposed to an attraction to the individuals who make up that grouping. (Ratzburg, n.d.) It is important that every single member never work against each other but strive to work with each other toward their shared goal(s). Any negative force that threatens the team's success redirects itself into something positive as long as team members share the same purpose. Cohesiveness is a process whereby a sense of we-ness emerges to transcend individual differences and motives (Kinicki & Kreitner, 2004, p. 15). Some of the teenagers in the families did not approve of how their parents were acting on decision making. Since these people were actually neighbors in real life, these teenagers were friends with the other teens in the game. This caused problems because some of the parents were being immature and this caused the teens to rebel against their own family. In certain challenges the teens would not try as hard as they should because they disapproved of what their parents were planning. Finally, one of the mothers talked to them and explained that it was only a game and more than anything they needed to work together as a family first. The teen realized that this was more important and strived to help his team out.
Looking back to ten years ago, many of us would have never thought technology would have taken off like it did. In order to communicate with others we would have to physically be in there presence or call them from a landline telephone (if available). Today, social media has created several outlet for individuals across the globe to communicate. Sites like YouTube, Google+, Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram allow users to communicate with each other without having to be physically present. If you are an owner of a smart phone then you are able to message, share photos, and video chat from the palm of your hand.
In this documentary there was a mental skill that stood out the most, in particular, group dynamics/ cohesion. Throughout the team’s football season coach Courtney helps the boys feel closer with their fellow teammates, thus, resulting in each individual to look out for one another. With that said, in the movie the team worked together to achieve a common goal which was to win a playoff game while also working on individual interpersonal relationships with other teammates. With that in mind, different elements of task and social cohesion are emphasized in this documentary.

I visited the official website of the Murray State Racers to obtain information on how much it would cost a family of four to attend a men’s basketball game. Season tickets can be obtained if you are a diehard fan; however, the prices for some of these tickets range from $180 to $275 and a Racer Club donation is required. Season tickets in the upper reserved bleachers are a bit cheaper coming in at $135 and a Racer Club donation is not required.
The story will begin with four current students, two males and two females who appear happy and excited to be Sooners. They will introduce their selves as well as tell what all they participate and their school work load. When done the audience well here “great, you good to go” and from there the audience will be able to see the smiles quickly fall off the faces of the students. This scene will set the tone for the documentary.
One of the main objectives at Walden University is to create an online educational learning environment that prepares a student to excel in corporate America. Students are given the opportunity to particate in group projects which can be rewarding yet challenging. In the online learning community one of the most important advantages of being part of a team is the ability to learn about different cultures values, beliefs and opinions. There is also a unified decision-making process where teammembers can collaborate, and work together to accomplish their shared goals.
By sharing their diverse perspectives, working together on assignments or on research, or simply supporting each other, students can achieve more. In addition, I personally prefer a cooperative environment over a competitive one. Some of my most enjoyable experiences during the last four years have been with my school math team and the New York City Math Team, working together with the other members to help each other perform well on the competitions. We helped our teammates understand how to solve different types of problems and learned their strengths and weaknesses, eventually forming into a community. In college, I hope to find a new community of students with whom to share my
There is a transformation happening today that is completely changing the way that we do things. The ways that we are communicating are shifting from face to face interactions to short, interactive messages. Technology seems to be making it easier to stay connected, but it is restricting our interactions with others and leading to isolation.
Face-to-face communication seems to be a dying art – replaced by text messaging, e-mails, and social media. Human communication and interactions are shaped by available technologies.
Thanks to the Fourth Industrial Revolution, information technologies such as smart devices and social media are expanding the communication methods. Humans are allowed to get more opportunities to interact with others even if they are physically far apart. However, despite the huge advantages of digital technology, it also causes serious
