Critical Appraisal of Qualitative Research Research is used in nursing to support evidence based practice (EBP) and is done through qualitative and quantitative research. Qualitative research will be the emphasis of the study performed by Wittich and Southall (2008) analyzing the diary of a 66 year old female and her personal journey of managing the extended time period of being positioned facedown after her ocular surgery (p. 437). Description of qualitative research and evaluation of the qualitative evidence, trustworthiness, and thematic coding will be discussed in the body of this paper.
Qualitative descriptive research There are several approaches to qualitative research phenomenological, grounded theory, ethnography, exploratory-descriptive

Thematic analysis technique is used to identify and analyze patterns or themes within the work being analyzed (Vaismoradi, Turunen, & Bondas, 2013). In order to familiarize oneself in the data, they must reread the diary so that they themselves are submerged in the data (Gray et al., 2017, p. 270). Thematic analysis was used in the study to expose 18 meaning units, which consist of a group of words that are associated with each other through relevancy (Graneheim & Lundman, 2004, p. …show more content…
Coding is the attribution of meaning to the components of the whole text once summarization of the content is summarized into units through coding (Graneheim & Lundman, 2004). Throughout the coding process the entire text had to be reassessed after each modification till there was no need for adjustment (Wittich & Southall, 2008, p. 438). Wittich and Southall (2008) grouped their 18 codes into seven categories and included them in table one of the study (p. 439). Implementing the same steps, data was extracted from an online journal and the results are shown in Table 1 below (Long, 2011). This is also known as a thematic map and gives visual demonstration of the codes and themes along with their description (Vaismoradi et al., 2013, p. 403).

On reading this article and identifying the study, there was a clear insight on how death and dying, and even improved health, impacted those nurses (Conte, 2014). Nurses, who worked closely with their patients, through the perils and suffering, culminating of death and losses, had grief not readily explored to enable that comfort zone (Conte, 2014).
In the first article chosen, “Why are Nurses Leaving? Findings From an Initial Qualitative Study on Nursing Attrition,” the research method used was qualitative. The specific type of research design used was phenomenology. The participants were interviewed about their person experience of what it was like working as a registered nurse. The research question for this study was, “What is the experience of RNs who leave clinical nursing?” The sample is registered nurses (RN) with a minimum of 1 year of clinical practice and no clinical practice in the last 6 months. The sample size was ten, which were a majority of females (80%),
Nurses are responsible in providing holistic, quality care to their clients. In order to effectively provide such care Boswell and Cannon (2009, p. 2 & 7) states that nurses must base their provision of care on the most current, up-to-date health information available and sound nursing knowledge. This is where evidence-based practice (EBP) comes in. Polit and Beck (2010, p. 4) defined EBP as "the use of the best clinical evidence in making patient care desicions". This usually comes from research conducted by nurses and other healthcare professionals. Thus it is pertinent that research reports are critically analyzed.
The authors of this article method of data collection was based on a five-focus group and three individual interviews on the clients that participated in the MBSR training. They analyzed and constantly compared methods to develop a grounded theory (Schellenkens & Jansen, 2015, pg. 1813). They determined that their focus group involved participants that were open for
The qualitative article being appraised is by Martin and Woods (2012) using the CASP tool qualitative framework (CASP 2013). These tools have been validated to ensure that studies can be assessed in a consistent way assessing the trustworthiness of the research article (Aveyard, 2014)

According to Schneider, Elliot, LoBiondo-Wood & Haber (2004), qualitative research methods, search for the meaning and understanding of human experiences in a naturalistic setting. A researcher obtains subjective facts in order to explore the experiences of each participant (Schneider, Elliot, LoBiondo-Wood & Haber 2004). As a result, qualitative research is a means in which a researcher gains an insight into the participant's point of view concerning their personal experiences; in order gain an understanding of the information given. Therefore this allows a researcher to collect subjective information to create a description of the phenomenon (Vishnevsky & Beanlands 2004).

Described below is a critical appraisal of a qualitative article by Lisa Booth using the frame-work suggested by Ryan, Coughlan and Cronin 2007 to establish its believability, robustness, credibility and integrity (Ryan, Coughlan & Cronin, 2007).
In this assignment, various research with regards to different agendas will be discussed and broken down into the approaches that were conducted and the results of these researches. The first study that will be analyzed will be; Factors Involved in Recovery from Schizophrenia: A Qualitative study of Thai Mental Health Nurses. The authors for this research study were; Kaewprom, Chettha; Curtis, Janette; Deane, Frank P. The main point of this study was to investigate international methods, such as those conducted in Thailand and compare and contrast them with American psychiatric approaches in order to improve the
In conclusion, this essay was dealt about a critical appraisal of qualitative study using CASP tool. By doing this module as a nursing student, this helped the author of this essay, to understand the importance of using the critical appraisal in the clinical practice. It also made the student nurse aware, by practicing the critical skills will help to improve the professional standard of competence according to the NMC code (2016). In order to improve the skills in the nursing practice, the student nurse decided to use a structure for her critical frame work, maintaining a reflective diary, and use the up to date evidence in the practice.
A qualitative study delves into a social or human problem in hopes to formulate a theory about that phenomenon. Paterson et al. (2005) performed a qualitative study that formulated a theory on how male nursing students learn to care. The researchers discovered how and what aspects perpetuated males to learn to care for patients empathetically while in nursing school. This paper will critique the above study noted and provide rationales.
According to Young and Solomon (2009) critical appraisal is a systematic process which can identify both, the strengths and weaknesses of a research study. During this process the reader is able to assess studies’ usefulness and whether or not the findings are trustworthy, it also supports in decision making in terms of whether to apply the study’s results in practice
As this research consisted of 30 participants, a table format listing the four themes with clustered excerpts would have provided this writer with easier interpretation of the data collected. It would have been useful to quantitatively designate the percentage of participants in support of a theme versus those with alternative perceptions. Narrative display of data collection findings made this research less vivid for this writer.
Codes are generally affixed to ‘chunks’ of different categories; words, sentences, phrases, or whole paragraphs linked or unlinked to a specific setting for instance. These chunks are retrieved and organized through the use of codes. The organizing section will necessitate some system for categorizing numerous chunks, in the goal that the researcher can easily find, take out, and assemble the segments connecting to a specific theme, research question, hypothesis, or construct (Miles and Huberman, 1994, pp. 56-57). They highlighted that it is preferable to deal with creating codes by designing a temporary ‘start list’ of codes related to fieldwork. That
