Logic Model for Bergen’s Summer Intensive Program in Preparation of a Successful First Year
The Summer Intensive Program at Bergen Community College was implemented in the summer of2014. It is a micro level college-bridge program designed to prepare diverse high school graduates for the rigors of college-level work with a specific focus on building math and writing competencies.
The Summer Intensive Program In addition to improving academic skills, the program’s curriculum also focuses on career and professional growth, leadership development, and service-learning.
The program demonstrates a student-centered form of education with the primary goal of transforming students into confident, successful, lifelong learners whose education and career
In addition, what I hope to get out of this program is the starting tools to become successful in life, such as help with résumé/cover letter writing and interviewing skills. I also want to obtain essential workplace skills and business etiquette. I want to be prepare for what is ahead career wise and further my professionalism and skills. I also
The Summer Leadership Academy will host the girls Monday thru Thursday of every week in July for summer support and extracurricular activities. Additional summer staff is needed to chaperone field trips, facilitate long-term projects and expanded learning (financial literacy, leadership development, college and career exposure, etc.) Eight graders with consistent participation will attend a weeklong college tour after they complete the program with their mothers. Since the majority of the families we serve are African American, this will be a tour of Historically Black Colleges and Universities. In addition, younger girls will be supported with their academics by attending a weeklong BrainCake summer sleep away camp. They will learn about science, technology, engineering, and mathematics as well as other fun social capital building activities. DCPNI summer staff will support both activities
After speaking with a few colleagues, I’ve learned that the university does not host any summer programs for high school students. There are a few programs that are hosted through external organizations, like the YMCA, but they have their own criteria and way of marketing to their audience.
Summer Early Entry was created to help students with developmental course requirements get a jump start on their academic career. Incoming freshman invited to attend the program will have the opportunity to choose from four classes and will complete up to seven credits during the five-week program.
That now the advancement program for students that are wishing to get ahead or looking for a future challenge. Are simply put on hold because the summer school classes are way too crowded that they can’t fit anyone else in there. Too many students nowadays are working half-heartedly so they can either just barely pass or take summer school since it’s a shorter time that they have to work hard. In other words our students are getting lazier and lazier by the day as our technology advances. The problem simply doesn’t end there right now students are limited by only being able to take one class ( up to 2 semesters ) per summer . Of courses not all the students can handle two or more classes but the ones who do . We need to be able to have a stable program where students are allowed to take more than one summer class and there wouldn’t be an issue about the classrooms being crowded. A stable program to help those we need to make up the classes they require to graduate and help those who need to make up classes and want to
The summer program I find most stimulating allows me to use both my creative and research skills. Having read what the program offers, I can see that this program provides both elements. Incidentally, a more enlightened and well-versed man with critical thinking and reasoning skills is produced in me as an agent of change within any society in which I find myself.
The mission statement “to foster in our students a belief in their individual strengths, a love of learning, and a respect for self and others, all in a safe, positive, and caring environment” encompasses the belief all students are teachable. The principal embodied this mission statement, with shift
A lot of people have misunderstood the “year-round” schooling. The year-round school is not an alternative curriculum for learning, but it can also be called continuous learning, all-seasons learning, or four seasons (Warrick, 1995). Quinlan, George, and Emmett (1987) define YRE as a reorganization of the school calendar, into instructional blocks and vacations distributed across the calendar year to ensure continuous learning. Students that learn in a year-round school, can progress with less interruption during the summer months. Students also retain more information during the four, short break than they would after the normal summer vacation. It is good for children to attend year-round school due to some loss of knowledge and skills over the summer vacation. Not only is this good for the students, but it is also good for the teachers because they would not have to worry about preparing materials to reteach their
Excellent program! Hats off to David Trillizio, great face to the organization. The program eased transition for my son and me. The program increases chance of a successful freshman year.
There are many things for me to learn from this program. Firstly, I would gain much knowledge and many learning experiences from participating in this program. I am applying to the Summer@Brown program to take a course in Marine Biology. By taking this course from a prestigious college, with an experienced professor, I would improve my knowledge of the subject of Marine Biology and take steps to find a career in the subject. It would also provide me with insight into the world of college academics, which would help me in several years when I am a college student.
Why do I want to participate in the summer research program including my goals for summer, strengths I bring and what I hope to achieve. An idle mind is a stronghold of the devil. No teacher would want to be stagnant in this age of growing technology and information. If I were teaching Math maybe I would not worry so much as 6 x 9 would equal always to 54 but in Science, things do change fast and as I blink my eye I can lose sight of a shooting star right before my eye. I want to be where the change in Science happens. And I am always fascinated about new things. And it has a domino effect with my students.I may want to go to a place to rejuvenate as school days are always busy but time flies so fast before you know it, it is back to school again.I always encourage my students to go to summer programs, recommend them to workshops and trainings; I think I need one too myself. If I want to be a better teacher and be better at what I do which is teaching then I need to be in a summer program. I want to learn new things and be productive at the same time. I need to grow, books and videos and articles in magazines are sometimes not enough. This is the reason educational tours or virtual tours are important. We need to get out of the classroom and see the world or see what’s on the other world. If not for these great scientists who persevered and persisted, we would not have known the beauty of the cosmic space above us and the bottomless canyon and snow covered mountains of the
I heard about this program through a family friend and instantly I thought ”Wow,this could be a great opportunity!”. I would like to participate in this program for several reasons because one it is definitely something I believe can take from and apply in the future. But the major reason why I want to take on this summer program is to help expand and improve many skills such as leadership, problem solving and my social skills, I believe that through this SIG program I can achieve all those things. What makes me the perfect candidate for this position is that I am very different and unique, the things that make me unique is that I am very interested in more than one thing which could help me connect with the mentees and also help provide different
Allowing students to take electives during the summer would produce more well rounded children. This is very important because students attending the school need to be proficient in many different areas, not just the ones the state requires. Learning to do math, science, and language classes are an important
Summer School was the perfect option for me because it was similar to a college application. I had to fill in many forms, take an English proficiency exam and contact people through
At one point, summer school was viewed as something negative, that only “bad” students who had failed a class or fell behind take in order to reach their peers’ levels. However, today summer school is seen as a big advantage that allows students to take courses before they are required to so they can take more rigorous classes sooner and make themselves for appealing for colleges. In the New York Times article, “Taking Summer School to Get Ahead, Not to Catch Up,” published on August 16, 2016, Kyle Spencer effectively incorporates ethos and logos to establish that taking summer classes to get ahead benefits a student’s chances of getting into college.
