Technological Advancements Of World War I

Not only was the industrial revolution going on, but more advances in weapons and how powerful technology actually was used during this time. Such items as the machine gun caused more people to die as a result, no one knew the power that these items had capable of doing until they were actually used in war. Old military ideas however remained the same in WWI, wars have always been won in the past by whoever got the most men onto the field the earliest. Since that was the old ideology of winning a war added with trench warfare and finally adding the fast pace of technology with newly acquired advanced weapons of the time equaled a massive amounts of the deaths during this time that no one saw coming. That poses the question, does technology itself have an impact on war or is it how it used is the key factor?

The Great War, also known as The First World War, was a war that affected most of Europe and great part of America, Africa and Asia. Though it didn’t achieve much and caused the death of many, it did give a ground for warfare technology to be created. Poison gas, aircraft, machine guns, and submarines were some of the new inventions tested during this period of war. Tanks were also created in this war, and were a very necessary invention especially for Europeans. British, Austrians, Russians, Germans, and French had previously created fighting vehicles that could transport artillery and people through normal terrain, but not through trenches, which made a great part of the Western Front. Any new technology for transportation was received, and the British were the ones that came out with the idea of tanks.

Technology greatly affected the way in which wars were fought, especially in World War I. The inventions of the repeating machine gun, the development of poison gas, and the introduction of the first tanks caused armies to fight using the bunkering method. This allowed men to huddle in trenches along what are called skirmish lines and throw, lob, and fire by other means weapons to cause damage while men were protected by about 4 to 5 feet deep earth. This caused men to fight in rear or echelon columns behind tanks can basically caused defensive fighting tactics resulting in drawn out protracted battles.

Maybe the generals of World War 1 (WW1) should have been told this when they used cavalry when they were outdated and rifles and machine guns were the weapons of this war. The vast idea of the tank was constructed in 1915 by a British Army colonel named Ernest Swinton and William Hankey, a secretary of the Committee for Imperial Defense. The first tank prototype, Little Willie, was revealed in September 1915. It was a great advancement of war technology and inspired and influenced other countries to come up with their own models. But when Little Willie hit the battlefield, it turned out to be a complete bust. It struggled to terrain the trenches and would often get caught in them. Also there were significant boosts in medical sciences. There were economical advancements in the United States. Finally there were advancements in world peace never seen before. Though war should never be defined as good, World War II created many beneficial advancements for the United States and the world.

War based innovations were coming out from all around the world, giving nations that superiority in the war. World War I introduced the American military to the modern industrial war. The conflict with Mexico in 1914 gave the U.S an opportunity to try new technology such as motorization and aircraft. However, this was strong a small conflict that did not translate to that of the First World War. The American military was not modern yet compared to other powers.
