The life of a functioning adult in today’s world consists mostly of communicating with people and groups that have different personalities and learning styles. So, it is vitally important that we learn to communicate in diverse ways so that our message(s) get across in the most effective and through way(s) possible. One of the learning styles that is hardest for me relate with is musical learning. While I enjoy listening to music and occasionally creating music, I simply do not absorb and process information that way. Naturalistic learners tend to learn best when the can directly connect any new knowledge to their prior knowledge, abstract ideas and concepts may be difficult for them to process. When communicating with a person who is this type of learner I try to use metaphors that are directly related to their field(s) of interest, and attempt to make any new information immediately applicable to their external environment.
Someone who is an organizer by nature will be good to work with because of their interest in details and their deep commitment to follow-through both in their relationships and when working on tasks. It is more difficult working and interacting with this type of person if the subject involves more creative or loosely defined topics. When communicating with an organizer I try to clearly define the topic and goals of the situation and if possible use schedules and lists extensively.
Givers are assets when working in groups because they naturally gravitate towards promoting strong and dynamic group relationships. They also cultivate the strengths that are within themselves and others. However, a giver can give too much and invest too much personal equity into a project or relationship. When I communicate with a person who is a Giver I make sure that they are given the opportunity to express themselves and share information.

At the beginning of the semester an assignment was given out in regards to assessing your learning styles. Upon doing the assignment I felt that I already knew the results I would obtain due to the fact that I did the same assignment my sophomore year of college. I was totally surprised with my results because they showed that I am becoming a more balanced learner. In previous assignments the results would usually show that I am more of one type of learner than another. My learning styles reflected that I am an active, sensory, visual and global learner. Knowing this aided in my success in this class as well as others because I started to apply this information into how I prepared or retained information for classes.
In EDCL 5339, Understanding Self, I took the Learning Styles Inventory (LSI). The results showed that my confirmed strengths are Oppositional, Power, Competitive and Perfectionist. I do not demonstrate strong Oppositional self. I tend to keep an open mind and am willing to listen to others’ opinion. Sometimes, I feel I go along with what others want easily. In my close relationships, I am more opinionated than I am with my colleagues. I would like to develop the ability to be more analytical and ask tough questions. I think this is an important skill of a leader. As for my lower Power, Competitive and Perfectionist self, I am content with who I am in those areas. I am a team player and I work well with individuals. I would not want to change a thing. I am not interested in controlling or “one-upping” others. I enjoy working with others and celebrating their achievements, along with mine.
Before I went to the ILC for the learning styles assessment, I had an idea of what my learning style was, but did not know what it really meant. I knew I was more of a visual or verbal learner, but I did not know how to use that in my everyday life.
Personal learning styles are highly complex and unique to specific individuals. It is often difficult to pinpoint an exact learning style. Though there are different categories, we often fine tune them to our own abilities. By examining our traits and tendencies we create a clearer understanding of how we process and learn information. With careful review, I have developed a specific analysis of my learning characteristics, including an evaluation of skill levels. There are many different learning styles which means different people take in and remember information in different ways. I am a visual learner which means I understand and remember things by sight. I learn best when I can see what I am learning so I will picture it in my head or even create some kind of object that I can see, such as a set of flashcards. Important things to me, like school and work, I keep neat and organized. Often I will close my eyes to remember something, and when I become bored I will find something to watch. The strength individuals must possess in order to be a giver is something very few people have. And it is this very strength that makes these type of people end up becoming successful. One example of this would be when three other students and I were assigned teams for a senior project in high school. Sarah impressed us with her expertise, but it turned out that Jason, Donte’ and Nat did most of the work; while Sarah only contributed empty promises and lengthy excuses. We had an agreement to meet once a week for an hour before senior seminar to work on the project. But then every week Sarah would walk into class claiming that no one told her, she hadn’t gotten any emails, or she had to care for her elderly grandmother. This project was worth more than half our course grade and the rest of us were getting stressed. The group continued researching articles for the project. Sarah was so out of touch that when she did finally bring an article, it was incorrect. So Jason found another article while Donte’ and Nat wrote it up. The three of us finished the group work. There are many intelligences described to us through our lives, all over the world. Does in-telligence decide what we do with our lives, or is one intelligence more important than any other? During my initial weeks at placement, I carried out classroom observations. This was necessary in order for me to assess the children and study their behaviour, learning style and academic ability.
