The Diversity of Learning Styles Essay

The poem “Students” by Tom Wayman, shows four different learning styles: The Vaccination Theory of Education, The Dipstick Theory of Education, The Easy Listener Theory of Learning, and The Kung Fu Theory of Education. Wayman is a teacher that has noticed that every person devolves into one of these different learning styles. The four different theory of education are used every day even if we do not know.

For years, there have been many theorists who have shared their views on how individuals learn. Such research has determined that individuals have different learning styles. It is important for teacher to understand the learning styles of both themselves and their students because it helps them to relay the subject knowledge to the students. The teacher is in a position where they must be able to assess the learning styles of their students. This means that the students and teachers are both in a process of learning.

At the beginning of the semester an assignment was given out in regards to assessing your learning styles. Upon doing the assignment I felt that I already knew the results I would obtain due to the fact that I did the same assignment my sophomore year of college. I was totally surprised with my results because they showed that I am becoming a more balanced learner. In previous assignments the results would usually show that I am more of one type of learner than another. My learning styles reflected that I am an active, sensory, visual and global learner. Knowing this aided in my success in this class as well as others because I started to apply this information into how I prepared or retained information for classes.

In EDCL 5339, Understanding Self, I took the Learning Styles Inventory (LSI). The results showed that my confirmed strengths are Oppositional, Power, Competitive and Perfectionist. I do not demonstrate strong Oppositional self. I tend to keep an open mind and am willing to listen to others’ opinion. Sometimes, I feel I go along with what others want easily. In my close relationships, I am more opinionated than I am with my colleagues. I would like to develop the ability to be more analytical and ask tough questions. I think this is an important skill of a leader. As for my lower Power, Competitive and Perfectionist self, I am content with who I am in those areas. I am a team player and I work well with individuals. I would not want to change a thing. I am not interested in controlling or “one-upping” others. I enjoy working with others and celebrating their achievements, along with mine.

Before I went to the ILC for the learning styles assessment, I had an idea of what my learning style was, but did not know what it really meant. I knew I was more of a visual or verbal learner, but I did not know how to use that in my everyday life.

Personal learning styles are highly complex and unique to specific individuals. It is often difficult to pinpoint an exact learning style. Though there are different categories, we often fine tune them to our own abilities. By examining our traits and tendencies we create a clearer understanding of how we process and learn information. With careful review, I have developed a specific analysis of my learning characteristics, including an evaluation of skill levels. Based on what I have recently learned and know from experience, I have also devised a structured plan for improvement of time management and study skills.

There are many different learning styles which means different people take in and remember information in different ways. I am a visual learner which means I understand and remember things by sight. I learn best when I can see what I am learning so I will picture it in my head or even create some kind of object that I can see, such as a set of flashcards. Important things to me, like school and work, I keep neat and organized. Often I will close my eyes to remember something, and when I become bored I will find something to watch. Visual learners like me have a hard time with spoken directions and would rather see a map. We are also easily distracted by sounds and attracted to color. The strength individuals must possess in order to be a giver is something very few people have. And it is this very strength that makes these type of people end up becoming successful. One example of this would be when three other students and I were assigned teams for a senior project in high school. Sarah impressed us with her expertise, but it turned out that Jason, Donte’ and Nat did most of the work; while Sarah only contributed empty promises and lengthy excuses. We had an agreement to meet once a week for an hour before senior seminar to work on the project. But then every week Sarah would walk into class claiming that no one told her, she hadn’t gotten any emails, or she had to care for her elderly grandmother. This project was worth more than half our course grade and the rest of us were getting stressed. The group continued researching articles for the project. In this essay I will be exploring the importance of learning styles and the effectiveness of them to student nurses, providing evidence from learning theories and also acknowledging David Kolb’s experiential cycle (1984). Furthermore, I will be discussing my dominant learning style, providing the advantages and disadvantages of my learning style on my learning and development, considering the various ways I can improve my learning. I will also explain my weaker learning style and express the different ways I can improve it, in making it an effective learning style for me to improve the quality of my learning.

A person with this learning style excels in the capacity to examine situations from many angles and generate many ideas. Studies indicate that individuals with the diverging learning style are interested in people and are creative and expressive. They also tend to be fascinated in the arts and often have humanities or liberal arts backgrounds. There are many intelligences described to us through our lives, all over the world. Does in-telligence decide what we do with our lives, or is one intelligence more important than any other? When we look at Merriam-Webster (2013) for the definition of intelligence it states that it is the ability to learn different or new actions dependent on circumstances involved. So, who decides what intelligence is, and do we know if emotional intelligence, personal intelligence or any other intelligence plays a part in the different styles of learning. During my initial weeks at placement, I carried out classroom observations. This was necessary in order for me to assess the children and study their behaviour, learning style and academic ability.
