The theory of emotional intelligence has emerged as a standard of intelligence over the last few decades and as a result numerous studies into emotional intelligence have taken place in many different countries under many different circumstances. Researchers have been conducting studies, concentrating on whether a student’s emotional intelligence can have an effect on their academic performance. Possessing a high emotional intelligence or a low emotional intelligence can affect a student’s academic performance. Some of the studies into emotional intelligence on a student’s academic performance will be looked at in this essay. This essay will firstly discuss what factors can impact on a student’s low emotional intelligence, followed by reviewing two studies where the results of a low emotional intelligence on a student’s academic performance were evident. Next this essay will discuss what factors contribute to a student’s emotional intelligence that can affect positive academic results and then review three studies that have resulted in showing that a healthy emotional intelligence can positively affect a student’s academic performance.
