Introduction
1. My opening/attention getting material is as follows: Sleep deprivation was a factor in some of the biggest disasters for example the 1979 nuclear accident at Three Mile Island, the massive Exxon oil spill, and the 1986 nuclear meltdown at Chernobyl. Sleep deprivation is affecting many Americans today especially college students. “A study in the Journal of Adolescent Health found that only 30 percent of students sleep at least eight hours a night, which is the average requirement for young adults. The statistics show that 12 percent of students with poor sleep cycles miss class three or four times a month and sometimes fall asleep in class” (Kamal, 2012). Many people do not know the serious effects of sleep deprivation

The average college student is deprived at least two full hours asleep each night according to “College Tidbits” a website designed to promote healthy lifestyles and productivity in daily college life. These results were pooled from multiple surveys done over hundreds of campuses throughout the United States. The consequences of sleep deprivation during the teenage years are particularly serious. Teens spend a great portion of each day in school when it starts early; resulting in a lack of sleep. Ultimately, sleep deprivation affects a student’s academic performance. When students lose sleep, they disrupt their sleep cycles and their bodies respond by decreasing their ability to concentrate and complete complex tasks. A prolonged period of cumulative sleep deprivation will affect their physical and mental well-being and consequently their capacity to learn.
It can be considered a symptom of an undiagnosed sleep disorder or other medical conditions. Those affected by sleep deprivation are known to experience daytime sleepiness, fatigue, clumsiness, and weight gain/loss as well as effects on the brain and cognitive functions. These symptoms negatively affect students who are having to get up early for school (“Sleep Deprivation - Research & Treatments”).
Thesis/Central Idea: Sleep deprivation can lead to serious health problems, forgetting important information, and will have a negative impact on the outlook of life.
Specific Purpose: My audience will understand the importance of sleep, the effects a lack of sleep can have on a person’s body, and ways to improve the quality of sleep.
As a college student, the information David Randall presents is very intriguing due to the fact that most of us are sleep deprived due to late night studying, among other things. It is very evident that Randall relies on statistics to build and progress his argument. He tells us how over time certain statistics have increases and by how much. This opens our eyes and makes us realize that there really is an issue. By providing these sources Randall becomes trustworthy and our doubt of whether this is true or not are put to rest. The author comes into contact with our feels once he brings in true stories to the picture. He informs us of the incidents that have occurred due to sleep deprivation. It is important to study the causes of sleep deprivation, or sleep disorders, among college students. A study by Central Michigan University (2008) found that sleep deprivation can lead to poor academic performance, impaired driving, depression, and behavioral problems. Another major statement about the cause of insomnia is simply difficulty falling asleep. These factors causing little sleep one night can add up since postponing an adequate amount of sleep until the end of the week has been shown to cause long term effects. Students who know they will have to stay up late some nights should set aside one or two nights each week when they can afford to sleep more.
Specific Purpose: Sleep and college students usually don’t tend to get along very well. Sleep and college life often bump heads due to stress, coursework and social activities. This speech will give the students useful information about dangers of not getting enough sleep and also hints on how to get a better nights sleep.
Thesis Statement: Sleep deprivation is harmful to college students because it hinders student learning and jeopardizes their safety while driving.
Research indicates that America’s sleep problems have increased and might be the number one health problem. The average amount of sleep that people get per night can range anywhere from three to twelve hours. According to Dr. David Dinges at the University of Pennsylvania, it is a fact that people who get fewer than six hours of sleep a night do not live as long as people who get seven hours or more. Most people do not realize the importance of sleep or even realize that it is needed to survive. Many people experience sleep deprivation; however it is commonly seen in college students. Irregular sleeping patterns tend to occur in students, which can later lead to long-term effects.

Sleep deprivation is the most widely recognized rest issue in America and College Students. Understudies dropout rate and instructional level is dropping in the fact that they don't get much rest. Rest is vital to our wellbeing, yet its influencing understudy's wellbeing the most. Being a college student we don’t have our personal alarm clock anymore, so we tend to oversleep or don’t sleep at all. I can affirm on the grounds that being all alone I have this same issue. I hear and see the influence it has on understudies day by day and at times battle with it myself. Sleep Deprivation is created by society's weights to succeed, which prompts numerous ailments and reductions in scholarly accomplishment in undergrads.
II. Thematic Statement: Most people don’t think about the long term effects of not getting enough sleep you need to function properly. But if we all were to go to
