Stress not only affects the work performance and grades in the classroom of a college student, it also affects their personal life too. With stress, people usually have too much pressure. They are overloaded with whatever is pressuring them, it brings them down and eventually over runs them. This frequently occurs with the lives of college students, especially if they have many assignments due. Thankfully, there are many ways to relieve and/or reduce stress levels. The minimum amount of time a person should sleep per night is around eight hours. This would add up to 14 hours per week a college student is missing of sleep. The students at the University Health Center say that sleep helps to improve performance, to fight off fatigue, to strengthen immune systems, and to improve mood. Without sleep, students cannot make the grades they potentially could make and they cannot put their full effort into their work performance in the classroom. The easiest way to relief the issue of sleep, a big stress enhancer, is to sleep. Sleeping is the best way to become refreshed and to relieve the stress fatigue. For this reason, college students need to get a minimum of eight hours of sleep every night to make sure that they do not add to their stress levels. One can release the stress they have built up by exercising daily. In doing this, a college student can burn off calories, which helps maintain good health, and they can release stress all at the same time. The best way to make sure one exercises is to set a time to exercise. It does not have to be long nor excruciating. Exercises such as, yoga, Zumba, weight lifting, cross fit, home workouts, swimming, and playing sports, can all help a college student to release stress. With good exercise, comes good health. College is a time of extreme stress due to societal and parental pressures. College students have expectations they have to live up to in order to fulfill and satisfy the needs of both their parents and society. Stress is expressed through a variety of symptoms that can be hazardous to student’s physical and mental health. With such high expectations to do well during college, students may become sleep deprived, which impairs mental capacity, but sleep deprivation is only one of a vast array of symptoms. According to a study by the Associated Press and mtvU, “eight in 10 college students say they have sometimes or frequently experienced stress in their daily lives over the past three months,” (‘Stress in College Students”). College Students are inevitably going to be affected by stress at some point throughout their college experience; however, the cause of the stress can vary by student. Some of the causes of stress on college students can be tests, homework, home life, social life, and jobs. Many times, college students have all or most of these causes piled on top of one another; therefore, giving them extremely high levels of stress. Leaving High School, I thought I was prepared to go into college. I knew how difficult college was going to be. So i told myself I would do my homework the day it was assigned, I would go to the tutors if i needed help, and I would study more to succeed. But one thing I did not prepare myself for was, how to overcome stress and anxiety. Regis College’s number one health concern is stress. The problem has come to be, due to the fact that students come from home, where their parents provided them with guidance, to a situation where they are independent. They have personal responsibility and it may not be completely straightforward for some people. Everyone’s experience is different, but each student experiences stress in some way. The competition for grades, the high expectations, relationships, future career choices, and several other aspects found in the college environment, can lead to stress. Going to college requires changes in daily routine. This includes sleeping adjustments, eating habits, time-management skills, balancing of relationships and several other changes.
Generally speaking, college requires a lot more effort from students than high school. Once you begin your college career, you will see that student’s are more motivated, professors are more demanding, and the workload is a lot more difficult. These academic standards are even more visible in graduate school. Now, although college is filled with adventurous opportunities, it can also be filled with stress. In other words, as a result of everything going on, it’s more common for college students to experience higher levels of stress related to school, work, finance, and in some cases, relationships.
I will use the ideas presented in this video; when I encounter stress in college by making sure I work on my assignments and never put them aside to the last minute. I know many times we as adults are so busy with little time to sleep.

While everyone harbors stress, stress is especially apparent in college students. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, the country’s largest grassroots mental health organization, rates of anxiety and depression have skyrocketed in what many are calling a crisis of mental health on college campuses. To manage stress students need to understand the factors that could trigger stress. For incoming freshmen there are things that they need to understand before entering college. First, they need to know the reason why they need to go to college. Knowing your reason will help students to achieve their goals and more dedicated with their studies. Second, create a plan. Planning and scheduling is essential in setting up goals. Students need to consider what schedule they prefer and their availability. Try not to enroll in multiple classes just to finish your course. I tend to be stressed out more during the school year, even more so, since I am entering my final year of college. As college is finalizing, not only do I have to deal with my final year, but also worry about grad school. One area I struggle with is multitasking. I get overwhelmed if I have more than a couple things on my mind. I would get headaches and had difficulty sleeping. When stressed, I will be short tempered and act nasty towards my close friends and family. Finally, the most stress I experience comes from the immense pressure and high expectations I put upon myself. I never gave myself a break, and I frequently critiqued myself. I asked myself do I want to spend the rest of my life like this? Asking this provoked me to start coping with stress and learn how to react less (manage/cope) to situations and challenges. If I find myself overwhelmed I will stop, relax, and approach these tasks one at a time. Coping with stress is not easy, but changing how I reacted to certain situations eliminated most of it. Also, doing any form of aerobic exercise (jogging, dancing, and swimming) is great for reducing stress (Myers & Dewall, p.507).
