Linguistics is a key factor of communication that is used every day, by essentially every human being. The human communication system is complex and not always easy to learn. There are multiple components, including phonetics, morphology, phonology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics. Knowledge of all of these components is what helps for humans to produce language. Linguistic competence is defined by The Free Dictionary (2008) as a speaker’s implicit, internalized knowledge of the rules of their language. A person with linguistic competence understands how to use a language correctly and properly in order to get the correct message across. At this time, the medical standard was to use Greek language. Obviously medical terminology has since then grown, developed and become more inclusive. Since this time, there has been a recorded format of the language used to explain and diagnose the health of human beings. De Medicina was written by Aulus Cornelius Celsus, a Roman Aristocrat in the 1st Century A.D. This acted as the first actual Encyclopedia of Medicine. Here, many of the words were translated from Greek to Latin. Words that did not have a direct Latin translation were then morphed with Greek prefixes and Latin suffixes, creating an entirely new vocabulary. De Medicina was first printed in 1478, not long after the first introduction of the printing press. From this, Latin was used as the medical terminology standard until around 1802, except for in cases where Latin would make the phrase more cumbersome. In those cases, the Greek terminology was still used. To this day, most medical vocabulary is still made up of Latin or Greek roots, especially in an anatomical setting. However, the present day standard is Medical English, which is the language used at International Medical Conferences.
