Nursing is an extremely demanding but rewarding career within the medical sector. Child nursing is a unique position to make a difference to the lives of children and their families. Through experiences in life I learnt that I can make a difference in the lives of other people. As a healthcare professional, I will be able to communicate effectively with each individual in such a close and intimate way, that no other career can offer. I am passionate about healthcare and I am looking to pursue a career helping young children with illnesses. Nursing will open the gate to my aspirations. Communication involves information being sent, received and decoded between two or more people (Balzer-Riley 2008) and involves the use of a number of communication skills; which in a nursing context generally focuses on listening and giving information to patients (Weller 2002). This process of sending and receiving messages has been described as both simple and complex (Rosengren 2000 in McCabe 2006, p.4). It is a process which is continually utilised by nurses to convey and receive information from the patient, co-workers, others they come into contact with and the patient’s family.

As I begin my fifth year of working as a nurse practitioner in a leading children’s hospital, I am certain the pediatric acute care setting is where I will continue my career of service to children and their families. Although I hold a masters degree in nursing and have been a primary care certified pediatric nurse practitioner for many years, I wish to expand my knowledge of pediatric nursing to encompass the unique and challenging aspects of pediatric acute care.

They must always maintain privacy and confidentiality in a nurse/child relationship. They should also differentiate between normal and abnormal physical findings and serve a child advocate. Nurses must also participate in activities to help manage the child’s pain and analyze any situations to anticipate pathophysiological problems and detect any changes in the status. Pediatric nurses may also administer medication while using an age- appropriate guidelines and determine the child’s needs related to pain management. One of the last general tasks is, that a nurse must evaluate a child for signs and symptoms of abuse and provide as much supportive care as possible to dying children.

This essay will discuss the topic of communication, providing an overview of the topic in relation to professional practise within adult nursing and then about children’s nursing and why it is important. Further outlining how communication influences all the choices we make, and how we adapt these skills to meet the needs of the patient. Christian goes about sharing these responsibilities by touching on the care and treatment aspects that nurses teach to children who have just been diagnosed. Being a communicator is also a role-played that is essential to the community. Effective communication is what will bring everything into place, and improves outcomes in their healthcare environment (Sharon ¶6). Furthermore, playing a role as a teacher is another, which requires communication with the patients, gaining knowledge about their health and medications ensuring that the patient knows and will not get confused on certain steps and procedures (Sharon ¶9). One thing that people should know about being a nurse is that it is one of the most demanding professions and requires a lot of dedication and commitment. If there is no commitment, then nursing isn’t the job to take.
