School Dress Codes School dress codes can sometimes be viewed as sexist or unfair because some believe that they are “only applied to girls” and that the boys do not really have a dress code, and they can wear whatever they want. Also, sometimes really strict dress codes can take away a person’s freedom of speech or their rights. Some tend to believe that school dress codes need to change. School dress codes are to harsh today, and need to be equally enforced on both genders.

Student should be free to wear whatever they want. Students have shown how strong and considerate they are of others. Students have learned to not judge a book by its cover. School uniforms never really capture the full creativity of a student. Students need to be thinking of their future kids and if they want their kids to wear uniforms. Many students have complained about school uniforms because they feel like their not themselves. Students love to be free and not told what to wear. The parents have even complained about the school uniforms in many ways. The parents have said school uniforms are way too expensive and don’t want to pay as much. Parents do not feel it is right that their kids can not express themselves because of school uniforms. Parents want to see their kids grow up with creativity and imagination. The people who are in charge of creating the school dress code don’t think of girls feelings, or their need to be an individual. There are also some unnecessary rules in schools, and what schools deemed inappropriate or distracting. The schools are taking some of the girls rights away. I believe that the dress code for the younger generation is too focused on girls, and it’s way too strict. Students should not have to wear school uniforms, some schools went for believing it would get rid of competition.

School uniforms also serve little to no purpose in benefiting the education of children around America. A uniform does not help a student learn things that they need to know. A uniform does not help a student study, take notes, or make flash cards. They bring no educational value to the table of learning. According to many educators and experts, “Uniforms do not improve academics, behavioral and social outcomes, or reduce discrimination or crime” (Farrell). So if a uniform cannot help a student increase their knowledge or grow as a person, why make students wear them?

School dress codes send a loud and clear message, “Your individuality is inconvenient.” (Rowland 22). The constitution guarantees the right to free speech,which can be interpreted as the right to freedom of self expression, and students use clothing to express themselves. Another message that dress codes send is that “the self identity that you want to express does not belong here.” Self expression is not an inconvenience or a distraction, it is the lifeblood of our nation. (Rowland 22). Schools tell students that they should be confident in themselves, but how can they if they cannot express themselves? School dress codes now are more about shielding the boys then protecting the girls which implies that boys are immature. Calling a girl’s clothes distracting is implying that she is at fault for any disruptions. “That 's like saying that because a store has a cash register, it 's the store 's fault if it gets robbed!” (Menza 1). Students are going to be distracted anyways. Sexist dress codes are like saying that an article of clothing, or a body part showing on a female will distract male students from learning. Dress codes should be simple for both genders, everyone should wear clothing that covers up the same area. With dress codes, students are forced to dress the same as other students, taking the individuality out of school, but schools try to send the message, you are individual. Dress code is a big controversy within almost all school districts around the world. There are many different opinions on the topic and how it should be handled, but it is mainly the students who suffer because of these strict, unruly, form of schooling. Girls are mainly the ones who are targeted against being blamed for causing a distraction or being inappropriate. Girls should be able to dress how they wish and not be shamed for it at school. Before arguing, I would like to provide some information about dress codes. Students have been complying to dress codes all of their lives. You can only wear certain clothing to school. Some families require that their children wear specific clothing to church on Sundays. School music programs require students to dress nice for concerts or events. In the past few years some girls have begun to notice unfair rules in dress codes. Li Zhou, an editorial fellow at the Atlantic Newspaper, stated that, “according to the Education Commission of the states, in the U.S., over half of public schools have a dress code, which frequently outline gender specific policies “. Female students feel they are being targeted by dress codes. Many of the school's dress codes do not limit what males wear. They just assume they won't be the problem. There are a few schools that regulate what males wear, but they just focus on the design on the shirt that they are wearing. The dress codes in school are used to limit what students wear in school. When most people think of the dress code it really is not that big but as the society is growing and changing. Not many people are realizing the dress code needs to be able to cope with the new ages. Students are not only missing out on opportunities to learn, but are embarrassed of being dress coded. It is a belief that school uniforms teach students to respect their learning environment and behave themselves, and, therefore improving discipline. However, that assumption isn’t entirely correct. Researchers have actually found that school uniforms don’t make students better behaved. According to a study of more than 4,500 students, those who wore a school uniform did not have fewer behavior problems or better attendance. Forcing students to wear uniforms lead to more problems and misbehavior instead of encouraging discipline. Students could get into trouble if they did not wear their uniforms correctly. Many kids in today’s society cannot stand the thought of someone telling them what to do, especially what to wear. Instead of encouraging respect, uniforms may cause rebellions. For example, in 2009, a group of students at John A. Ferguson Senior High School rebelled against their school uniforms. Instead of following their school uniform requirements, the students wore what they thought would be a better school uniform to school. Not only uniforms don’t earn schools the respect from its students, but it may also lead to more problems.

There has always been something up with the rights and roles women have in society. They receive objectification for almost everything they attempt and are told to fit into these roles that men aren’t even asked to try. We are told and taught from a young age to act a certain way or receive certain consequences. We fear cat calls for trying to look good for our own confidence, and are shut down for trying to dress the way we want because of a “lack of modesty”. The way women dress is highly criticized, and it doesn’t only go for older women, but for younger girls as well. Regarding dress codes, although some see it as a means to keep “drama” down and students concentrated in class, most to all school dress codes limit a female’s ability to express herself through her clothing. This is a matter that needs to be changed.
