Humans are created to socially interact with other beings, and without even realizing it, they analyze others. While humans analyze their external environment, they often turn it around and examine themselves. This can be impacted by objects in the external world and the individual may become self-aware. Self-awareness involves analyzing one’s internal beliefs and values, and deciding if the behavior demonstrates these values. Analyzing one’s self cane have a positive or negative impact on the individual; either the person will be satisfied or dissatisfied with how their values and behavior align. If they are satisfied, this can influence the individual to think pleasantly of themselves and have a high self-esteem. If they are dissatisfied with what they see, it can influence or motivate them to change something about themselves. This research paper will highlight the importance of the self-awareness theory and how it can be used to have a positive influence on humans.
Self-Awareness Theory
The self-awareness theory is defined as, “the idea that when people focus their attention on themselves, they evaluate and compare their behavior to their internal standards and values” (Aronson, Wilson, Akert, & Sommers, 2016). Humans often analyze the world around them. They can analyze the environment or other people, but individuals are constantly taking in information around them. Sometimes, this analyzes it turned inward. Individuals begin to become aware about
“Self awareness is a state of being where you deeply understand your thoughts, emotions and behaviours and how they affect people and the world around them. When people are self aware they move beyond simply existing or reacting to their environment to deliberately living a fulfilling and meaningful life. People get to know the real of them and do things that reflect who they are deep inside” (Source: internet).
The NHS define self-esteem as being the opinion each individual has of themselves. NHS, (2015). It is the self-image and self –respect of an individual’s perception of themselves. Roshahl.c, (2008). This assignment is going to discuss the six factors that affect self-esteem. These factors are the growth promoting climate, the looking glass self, self-actualisation, ego identity, social identity and finally, the constructing of self-concept. Maslow stated that people are motivated to achieve certain needs. When one need is fulfilled a person seeks to fulfil the
A factor that causes important changes in a person’s life is when one experiences the self-realization
Daniel Goleman provides examples of individuals experiencing self-awareness at both work and in one’s life (Goleman, 2013). Being conscious of one’s inner world, beliefs, thoughts, and concepts are what comprise self-awareness. In one’s daily life there are situations, struggles, and trials which can impact sound judgement and resolution. Self-awareness helps the individual make healthy decisions and knowing when to ask for help to cope with an overwhelming issue. Also learning to grow through a limiting perspective to compromise with others and seek alternatives (Levine, 2013). Others may disagree with ones beliefs, decisions, and lifestyle, yet the individual can recognize feelings about those in disagreement with them and avoid unnecessary conflict. While in the work
Self-awareness can be defined as the understanding of one’s own character and actions. By being self-aware, people can better understand their own circumstances and the circumstances of others. However, people are often unconsciously swayed towards making biased choices because they do not recognize external or internal factors that affect their decision making. By being self-aware of these various external and internal factors, people can make more accurate decisions regarding a scenario because they recognize the existence of these biases or factors. Furthermore, the ability to be self-aware indicates that an individual has a high capacity for empathy because they can understand other people’s situations, which is the definition of empathy.
An individual’s opinion of who and what they helps them form and develop their own individuality. It is established through the individual’s behaviour and attitude. It relates to how they view themselves and is associated with their own self-image, body image and self-esteem. Murphy (as cited by Gross, 2001) stated the self is part of the individual which is understood and know to by the individual them self. A person’s physical appearance is the first thing that is seen when they are in contact with others. If the individual feels positive and confident within themselves then this will influence the development of a strong and healthy life. This can also influence how they experience life allowing them to develop in a positive, healthy way and enabling them to build up strong relationships with others. Self concept can be based upon one’s own expectations and goals which they hold
Self-awareness involves the ability to understand and evaluate your own emotions through reflection, self-comparisons and feedback from others (Steiner, 2014). Self-awareness aims at enhancing self-knowledge, behavioral, and emotional improvements, and accommodating weaknesses (Steiner, 2014). It allows individuals to understand how they think, behave, and respond to situations that they encounter. To achieve this, feedback from other people is required. People who are self-aware are self-driven, resourceful, eager to learn, self-motivated, and problem-solvers. They also portray independence of self-concept (Steiner, 2014). Self-awareness helps an individual to practice effective self-management.
Strengthening of the self-concept could be brought on by using processes such as the five core aspects of self-awareness:
Possessing self-awareness is key to knowing and understanding the different attitudes, beliefs, and values one has and understanding when differences could affect them. An example
Self-awareness is a terminology that has been widely discussed in not only psychological but also business and managerial perspectives. There are a number of authors trying to propose different definitions of it.
Self-awareness enables you to be "who you really are", take responsibility for your behavior and get up the courage to initiate changes.

Self-awareness is another part of how we perceive ourselves. The degree to which we are aware of ourselves vary. There are two different types of self-awareness, your private self-awareness and your public self-awareness. Your private self-awareness is the awareness of your internal state such as your thoughts, feelings, or desires. It can make us more aware of our attitudes and values. When our behavior doesn’t match our values, a discrepancy is made. Because discrepancies are viewed as negative, we will usually seek to change our behavior.
When introducing the concept of self-consciousness, it can be very difficult for individuals to understand that there are many forms of self-consciousness. Many already have a definition in mind as soon as they hear the word self-consciousness. It is made up of many concepts because it isn’t just a cognitive state, rather, many cognitive states. The mind processes many things as opposed to just knowing things. Humans are capable of doing and desiring many things while self-evaluating and questioning oneself. Everyone is able to consider their own actions and to think about themselves. When thinking, humans are able to consider ideas and depictions regarding the self and others. Regarding oneself allows for evaluating self-worth in refinement to common social roles (Bermudez).
Self Awareness is the ability to know your own emotions and recognize their influence while using guts feeling to guide decisions. It includes acknowledgement of our personality, our strong opinion and weaknesses, our likes and dislikes. Developing self-awareness can help us to identify when we are stressed out or under pressure. It is also often a must for real communication and interpersonal relations, as well as for developing empathy for others. Self
