The Manifest Functions Of Education

A staple of society that started with the creation of, and will continue until the end of, mankind, learning. Originally, learning was a survival tool for the earliest of hunting and gathering societies for things like attaining food, making fires, and finding new areas to live. In the more industrialized and informational societies of today, learning mostly takes the form of education. The definition of education is “a groups formal system of teaching knowledge, values, and skills” (Henslin). Manifest functions of education include topics such as reading, writing, adding, subtracting, along with many other things that are taught to students through teachers and textbooks in the classrooms. Unintended are the latent functions of the educational system, which are harder to see. When one is born, the first group they are exposed to is the family, which is fundamental in teaching children at a young age who they are and what they should be like. The nest step some children may take is to go into a daycare, a wider group to be introduced to, in which they can be introduced to newer ways of thinking and other viewpoints on life. Due to the young age of children at the point of daycare, little around them is processed, and their thoughts are infinitesimally, if any, altered. When children finally reach the age where they can enter a school and receive a formal education, ideas and thoughts about life change as they learn more in the new environment.
