the dog inspires a rabbit to run away from death, not to run to it. A dog chases a rabbit away. The rabbit doesn't run towards the dog, it runs away so the dog can't hurt it. That's what Tyler means when he says, "death inspires me like a dog inspires a rabbit." He means that death inspires him to stay
Life and Death are one thread, the same line viewed from different sides. Wes Moore and Maria Reyes were right along those different sides. Life and Death was written by the authors John Malcom and Candace Jaye, with each telling the different profiles of Wes Moore and Maria Reyes. Life and Death is a Biography in which, John and Candace, the authors, discuss about Wes Moore and Maria Reyes and their life experiences between life and death. Wes Moore grew up in Baltimore and Maria Reyes grew up in Los Angeles, they both had to make a big turn around for their lives. “Some decisions are just that important” as quoted on the book’s cover. At one point in everyone’s lives, we’ve all faced with situations where we had to make important decisions and deal with them as well, of course similar to what Maria and Wes went through.
The fear of death is meaningless in this concept. But what are we fearing in death? Is it the unimaginable or our life afterwards? Socrates does not seem to explain this; he simply summarizes that if you lead a life, such as seeking true wisdom, the idea of fear does not exist. What completely is death? He explains it as the separation of the soul and body, but is there actually more to that? For instance, what occurs to your body once you are liberated? How can the soul be called pure if it tainted within a body? Even though the body is simply a vessel, the actions of the individual and the knowledge they have is due to some of the information obtained from the body. The body is not completely evil; although it is distracting, the soul carries on the information of the body. So, in this sense, what does he mean by pure (pure from what- sin, distractions, false happiness). Socrates fails to take into account these type of questions and simply tries to state death as such: upon death, a person obtains an immortal and flawless soul and a person grows closer to the truth upon death.
Freud once said that death is inevitable and yet inconceivable. The idea of death, mortality, and afterlife has been a question for the human race since the beginning of time. Throughout time and space these ideas have changed and have been modified according to their own views depending in what region they were born in and the time period. To look at what has changed over the periods we have to look at our history starting with writings like the Epic of Gilgamesh, the Hebrew texture, the Bible and many more stories both historical and religious. All trying to answer the same questions regarding death, mortality and the afterlife.
I chose to write about Stressed Out because I connected with the lyrics when I first heard the song and I wanted to look at them more closely. Stressed Out is a song by twenty one pilots, off of their album Blurryface. The song is from the point of view of Tyler Joseph, singer and main lyrics writer of the band. He talks about his experiences with nostalgia, trying to fit into society as an adult, and facing insecurities.
Imagine watching everyone you love die around you, knowing your turn may come soon. Agatha Christie’s fictional novel Death Comes as the End captured the misery and fear of this situation by relaying the story of Renisenb and her struggle to stay true to her identity. Throughout the story, Christie incorporated imagery, themes, and symbolism in order to enhance the plot.
On the topic of death, a question had been made on whether immortality is preferable to dying. In Plato’s Phaedo, Socrates’ death scene, Socrates has one last philosophical conversation with his friends about what happens to the soul when it leaves the body after death. Socrates believes that the soul is immortal, meaning that it will live on even when the body does not. The themes in Phaedo are similar to those in Leo Tolstoy’s “The Death of Ivan Ilych,” which tells the story of a man named Ivan who suffers from an illness and eventually dies. At first, Ivan believes that he is living a pleasurable life; he is married with children and works as a judge, however, his illness consumes everything he thought to be good and continually suffers
Everybody experiences death differently. Everybody has a unique response when somebody close to him is dying. The variety of such reactions is exemplified in “The Discus Thrower” by Richard Selzer and “Do not go gentle into that good night” by Dylan Thomas, two works concerning the topic of death. While the purpose of Selzer’s work is to describe a man who fights against his death, the purpose of Thomas’s is to persuade his father to fight against his own death. Both authors make use of syntax, imagery, and tone to carry out their desired purposes.
In the poem “Do not go gentle into that good night” by Dylan Thomas, the narrator uses many symbols and metaphors to give us a picture-like understanding of each stanza. The message the narrator is giving is not to give into death without putting up a fight. We are able to clearly understand the meaning when the narrator says, “Rage, rage against the dying if the light” (Lines 3, 9, 15, 19), the word light being a metaphor for life. Though the whole poem is mostly metaphors, an example is when the narrators says “Though wise men at their end know dark is right” (line 4). The word dark is used as a metaphor for death. Though the narrator uses many metaphors, we are still able to get a clear understanding of what the narrator is trying to portray.
The last impression of sunset then looms on the horizon when the speaker catches sight of “a last splendour” that burns “the heavens of” the dying soldier’s cheek. The mention of the “stars” in line (7) announces the dying of the daylight and the coming of night, which corresponds in the LIFETIME IS A DAY metaphor to death through the metaphorical inference DEATH IS NIGHT. This is further reinforced through the addition of the epithet “cold” to the “very old and bleak” stars, thus conveying via the conceptual metaphor LIFE IS HEAT/FIRE and the inference DEATH IS COLD that the soldier is now cold and dead. Interestingly, the metaphor LIFE IS HEAT coheres with the metaphors A LIFETIME IS A DAY and LIFE IS LIGHT since, according to Lakoff and
“Life is a precious thing, death is the great evil”, said by Heinrich Heine who is a famous poet. So we can know that life is the most important thing for every single life entity. There are a lot of words that can modify life, such as important, precious, formidable and so on. The reason why there are so many good vocabulary can modify life is nobody want to lose their own life. It is clear that not only human, but also animals cherish their own life. According to the utterance which Heine said, we should not kill anyone. However, the life is also cruel. Crime is happens every day and some of them can not be excused. People may do some wicked things for some reasons. In this case, the death penalty is the way that can punish them and caution other people and it is necessary to have death penalty.
Death is never easy. Afterall it is the only sure thing anyone will ever do. Yet how one dies is determined by how they live. One who lives their life to the fullest will be content and open to death, while one whose life has been empty will fear it; but what if the difference between full and empty was not so easily differentiated? What if reality and falsehood were the same? This idea is contemplated in both Death of a Salesman by Arthur Miller and The Death of Ivan Ilych by Leo Tolstoy. In the world of the salesman, Willy Loman, who can not see who he is nor distinguish reality from fantasy, and the world of Ivan Ilych, who can not see his life for what it is nor find true happiness,
Death is one of people’s worst anxieties that many realize that it is inevitable to “cease.” Death deprives one from their future and worldly affairs. The crux of universal fear of death is not the loss of the actual state of livelihood, but the loss of worldly matters such as success, fame, recognition, and gratification. Thanatophobia only exists because death is always perceived as painful and sinister. People truly fear not accomplishing their duties in the human life. The most common ambition that many strive for, but fear to never attain is to make their mark in society before one’s demise. People want to feel like they have completed their life’s journey and lived life to the fullest extent. Every day is significant to address the
Everybody will die at some point. I know death is coming and there is nothing to fear about it because I believe that there is nothing about it on the other side to be afraid of. I was content, perfectly, to be precise before I was born and I believe it will be the same state even with death.
When the day of the bloodbath arrives, Anton is a nervous wreck on the inside, but looks calm, cool, and collected on the outside. He knows he did not train enough for his guaranteed survival from the games, but at this point, he has slightly worse than a 2% chance of winning it all. Obviously, those aren’t the best odds that he has, but it is the only thought that is somewhat comforting. Numbers don’t lie, and from this point onward, the numbers can only increase in favor. Or the sweet embrace of death could take him, which could happen at any time during the games, but that is the more pessimistic way of thinking between the two.
I found myself after losing someone close to me. The moment a car accident caused the death of my cousin, Holly, I began to contemplate my life and the meaning of it, especially life after death. In this situation, it took something drastic happening for me to really think that my life needs to change. Sometimes it is not until we lose someone we love that we realize we need to know for sure where we will go when we die.
