In today’s digital age, the record industry is booming and in 2014 alone recorded music generated almost 15 billion dollars, ("Global Recorded Music Sales Totalled US $15 billion in 2014.") and now, more than ever is the best time to capitalize on it. Due to the increased value of music and money that is being brought in from such artists as Taylor Swift, Justin Bieber, and Kanye West music is becoming a money making game. There are many start up indie labels that are capitalizing on local music scenes all around the world. By doing this they earn money, as well as promoting originality and exposing music that should be heard by the masses. Because the DIY music scene is booming, with places such as Brooklyn, LA, Philly and Austin all on the rise, now is a great time to promote, record and expose tomorrow 's future stars. For me and my label, Basement Tapes Records, I am going to create a record label that is different than the rest. I will only sign and promote unknown artists who have the potential to be great. I plan keeping everything “in-house” that includes, production, promotion, revenue, and having producers that only work for my label. By doing all of these things I feel as though I can build Basement Tapes Records, to be a successful, money making, label. Originality and the ability to be different are crucial in today’s music world. By being different I am more likely to attract more attention from people, other labels and most importantly, potential acts. Music
My long-term goal is to develop a major record label that around the world is notorious for its excellent artistry. However, before I do, I would love to obtain as much knowledge as possible. Already I have some experience in the music business field. In 2011, I graduated from Austin Community College with an AAS in Commercial Music Management. During my last year at Austin Community College, I was chosen to receive an internship with Couch Professors Entertainment.
For new bands, one of their first major steps into getting into the business is usually finding a record label. A record label is commonly known by most people as someone who simply signs a band and sells their music. What most people do not know is that they do much more than that. A label does do all the things that people believe they do, however, they also do much more to help an artist. A label is one band’s contact to other artists or promotors that will help further their popularity and reach out to more businesses who could potentially seek endorsement deals to support an artist while also advertising their own product (Lindvall). However, some bands have had negative experiences with labels. There are many negative outlooks on record labels recently and their work with certain artists.
From the day we’re in our mother's stomachs, to the day we die, we have always been listening to music. For me, listening to music all my life helped me develop a passion for it. When I was around the age of 6 my dad introduced me into the world of Rock. The very first band I remember listening to was System of a Down and ever since then, I fell in love with rock music and all its possible variations; for a long time this was all I listened to. It wasn’t until high school that I started listening to all sorts of genres and realized that I wanted to have a career in the music industry. That's when I learned about producing music.
When creating music, there must be something that appeals to the audience. Music in this age must now be more original than ever. New genres of music are being born at a rapid pace, which makes being original a difficult task. “Re-Tuning the Music Industry—Can They Re-Attain Business Resonance?” by Sudip Bhattacharjee, et al, writers for Communication of the ACM, makes the following statement: “Each song is unique. Artists strive to be distinctive and constantly adapt and innovate their offering. Consequently, music consumers face non-trivial search and evaluation tasks prior to each music purchase.” (Bhattacharjee 136). The willingness for consumers to buy music, whether it is an album or just one single song, increases when the music is something they have never heard of before. A band such as Nirvana was able to do just that. In the
In the years that Motown Records was being established there were many successful Independent labels. For example, Paramount and Gennett Records were widely known and successful. Independent labels started in the 1920’s. Independent labels want that big sound feeling, without the dealing with corporate America. Although, Motown Records started small, founder Berry Gordy Jr. had no intentions of keeping it that way by any means. This essay will briefly explain how Motown grew and the rich history of legendary musicians that helped establish Motown. This essay will also discuss how Motown Records impacted the music industry and how Berry Gordy Jr, and artist such as The Miracles, The Supremes, and Stevie Wonder to name a few create a sustainable
The Australian music industry needs to have a dynamic digital presence that showcases the innovative projects of local musicians to a national and international market.
When you turn on the radio and change it to your favorite station, what are most of the songs about? In today’s society, the majority of them are probably about sex, drugs, and alcohol. These are the principles mainstream singers like Lil Wayne, Drake and Nicki Minaj are pounding into young people’s minds. Instead of directing their music negatively, these artists should try to encourage respectable behavior among our youth. I believe that the negative lyrics in many popular contemporary songs have a negative influence on the youth of America.
Using your own knowledge, and the websites above, describe some of your thoughts concerning the influence of technology on the development and proliferation of popular music.
Almost every musician is covetous for originality, a word characterized as, “the quality of being novel or unusual.” Yet, any persons can safely argue with sound supporting evidence that the notion of originality- music speaking- is nearly nonviable because creativity is often contingent upon subliminal influences and impressions existing in one's natural world. Most ideas are influenced by an outside force. Music, for instance, is an ever-changing art form consisting of both legends and contemporary rising stars. It is the marvel and bronze that gets chiseled away generations through generation. As one generation fades out another arises to carry the torch incorporating their own musical themes and motifs with those before
Forget everything you think you know about what it takes to be a successful independent recording artist!
In today's society, originality is crucial for any musical artist to gain popularity and remain relevant. This particular necessity to prevail as original is primarily due to the rapidly changing world of demand for uniqueness. Although rock bands dominated the music scene during the late 1980s and early 1990s, this quickly transitioned into our communities worshipping young female pop singers.
Music of this generation has been thought to be worse than other generations. There is always the argument that music has gotten worse, and both sides have equally strong evidence. Modern popular music has gotten worse, and that has always been the case, however there are a plethora of other genres and styles of music that still carry that authenticity and creativeness that we’re missing. Most of the reason for lack of creativity in music is corporate greed. Large companies like to release less inspired songs because they bring in the largest profits. There is still good music in the world, it’s just a lot harder to find. Music should have creativity and authenticity, and that’s something indie music has that popular music doesn’t.
Nowadays, teenagers are living constantly surrounded by technology. Even if the younger generation may not see it, technology has had an impact on different factors. The widespread use of digital technology in the music industry has allowed consumers to reproduce digital versions of copyrighted songs inexpensively, with the help of many software and websites. There has been an increase in digital copying activities and those are most of the time claimed responsible for producers’ loss in revenues. While some people claim that the increase of digital technology has killed the music industry, in fact it has lead to innovation and new ways of consuming and sharing music, such as
In the midst of the United States’ “dot com bubble” (years 1997-2000), there was a surge in technology that brought about file sharing and digital downloads. Threatening the survival of the music industry and introducing a unique set of challenges for the industry to overcome. To remain relevant in the new global market of digital music online, the music industry would have to evolve and change with the introduction of each new facet technology had to offer. The introduction of digitally compressed music files, so easily attainable for a small fee or downloaded legally (pirated) for free, made the music industry reevaluate how to make a profit and protect copyrights. Social media created a visible opportunity for both consumers and artists to maintain digital relationships while providing a platform for consumers to follow and discover new musicians and bands, naturally, making the internet a promotional medium for artists. As the corner record shops closed to make way for virtual storefronts and instant downloads; the internet, digital downloading, and social media made an enormous impact on the music industry that has changed the way consumers purchase, source, listen to, and produce music today.
The creation of musical works has always been culminated by several different processes and usually involves many people. The process takes a lot of time delaying the release of music. Advancement in technology has played a significant role in the music production by lowering the length of time it takes to produce recorded material. Artists usually sign a contract with a recording company that markets their music products. The internet and low-cost recording technologies have created a “do-it-yourself” music movement. New artists have gained worldwide recognition without landing a recording contract with a major record label.
