The Effects of Exercise on the Body
The common thought of exercise is that it is only for those who want to get bigger, stronger, or lose weight. In actuality, there is much more than physical effects. While a change in physique due to weight loss or an increase in muscle mass are external effect of exercise, internal effects can lead to a healthier, happier, and longer life. Regular exercise has an overall, positive effect on the body, weight management, the cardiovascular system, and the immune system are some of the most important of these benefits.
The two predominant types of exercise are aerobic and anaerobic exercise. The Gale Encyclopedia of Fitness describes Aerobic exercise as “continuous exercise of relatively low intensity but long duration” (Sisk and Atkins). These exercises could include ones such as jogging or playing a sport to increase the heart rate, strengthening the circulatory system. Anaerobic exercise is “any activity or sport that involves brief spurts of intense, difficult activity that typically lasts from a few seconds to about two minutes” (Atkins). A prime example of anaerobic exercise is lifting weights to strengthen the muscle. Though these two types of exercise are different in many ways, they have similar health benefits for the human body.
