The Seven Characteristics Of A Good Student

Reading the article Lake and von Baeyer (2005) “Tips for Successful Students”, I realize that most characteristics are necessary for one to succeed as a student in any area of life. For example, one must ask questions and take notes in order to interact with the professor and further their knowledge in a particular subject. These two skills coincide together along with the initiative to achieve a certain stardom. One aspect of learning is never lonesome, though it is possible to be additionally gifted in one region over another.

After reading “On Becoming a Better Student” by Donna Farhi Schuster, I started to think about some of the idea she mentioned. I have always been a curious person. I have always wanted to learn more about what I was interested in, but that stopped in high school. Expressing interest in something in high school was not something I did often. I was so overwhelmed with busy work in school that I was exhausted by the time I had time to actually sit down and research something I was interested in.

Read Lake and von Baeyer's article, “Tips for Successful Students." Also, review the characteristics of a successful student as explained in the lecture. As you consider these, which is your strongest characteristic? Why? How will this characteristic help you to become a successful student in your program of study?

There are many characteristics that are necessary for teachers to have. First, it’s important for teachers to be vastly knowledgeable about their subject matter. Teachers need to be enthusiastic about whatever they are teaching, especially if they want to sustain students' interest. If the teacher isn't interested in the subject, why should the students? Educators should always be willing to learn all they can about the content in which they are teaching—making the content as relevant or interesting as possible. From an early age, it is drilled into our heads: Restlessness, distraction, and ignorance are the enemies of success. There is a multitude of misconceptions about the ideal outstanding student. This outstanding student maintains a perfect attendance, has a cumulative GPA of a 4.0 or higher, actively participates in extracurricular activities, and is a generally well-rounded person. A student such as this is rare to find, sure there a plenty students out there such as this, but the majority of the student population does not fit into this category. Why is it then, that any student that falls short of this standard, is blatantly criticized and looked down upon? One of the main reasons that this ludicrous standard exists is do to the fact that many to do not consider the things that must be present for this student to be manifested.

What makes a student a good student? Typically we may think about a book worm stuck away studying in the dark as the “A+” standard. However, is that really what it takes to prosper in education? I believe that being an educated and intelligent person goes beyond book work and requires oneself to be sociable, confident, accepting, and prepared to face challenges. Recently in my senior year I have learned more about myself, and looking at one event in particular, realized how my ability to break a racial divide has prepared me for life after high school.

In the course the class went over the characteristics of successful students and struggling students. The first thing of a successful student that influenced me, was accepting personal responsibility. A person has to see themselves as the cause their outcomes and experiences. If someone sees themselves as a victim, success most likely will never come to them. Employing interdependence I learned is another important characteristic of a successful student. In college a person has to build mutually supportive relationships to help them achieve their goals. People who refuse assistance from others who could help most likely will have a difficult time achieving success. The most important thing I learned of a successful student was self-management. A person has to plan and manage their time wisely

If I could say who I am as a learner, I would say that I am a risk-taker, and am very knowledgeable. I like this because I am not afraid to try new things, but I still know what I am doing. If you don’t be a risk taker and try new things, you can never learn anything. These are two very good traits to have, but I still have goals. I want to be more reflective and look back on my mistakes so I can learn better. My goals for behavior are to talk less and get more work done. The best way for me to work is to get a lot done and then take a lot of little breaks, sometimes I get carried away and start to talk and it gets crazy. I learned about this trait when I was a lot younger when I would clean my room. I would get distracted and start playing around, and then I would stop and clean really fast so I could take a little break again. I think this is a result of what type of learner I am. To become a success in life, we all need to learn to become a good student in every aspect of life. Becoming a good student takes much work and self-discipline. There are many ways that a student can stand out from the rest of the class. These good students are distinguished by their attitude, intellectual skills, consciousness, and achievement.

Teaching is a difficult occupation. Teachers play an important part in training children, teenagers… So, a good teacher must have some special qualities. They are: knowledge, creation, confidence, empathy, sense of humor and passion.

A good student is someone who always tries to do the right thing and makes education an important priority. Being a good student in school is an excellent start on having a successful future. Motivation is the key to their success. There are many qualities to be considered a good student. Three of the most important qualities are maintaining good grades, having excellent behavior, and managing your time wisely.
