April 20th, 1999, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold went to their school in Littleton, CO. They preceded to kill 12 and injure 21 students and faculty before killing themselves. Columbine shooting is infamous as one of the worst school shootings in US history. Harris and Klebold were known as outcasts and were ridiculed regularly. It has been said that they were out for revenge on the school for being mistreated (New York Daily). This extreme case is the cause of a broken psyche due to repeated blows from peers. “Harassment and bullying have been linked to 75% of school-shooting incidents” (Statistics). Not every case will lead to a mass shooting, but is more plausible to lead to suicide. Teenagers are taking their own lives, because they can …show more content…

What would drive two seemingly normal high schoolers to try and slaughter everyone they went to school with? Was it the bullying, angst or video games and movies? Or none of the above. As we examine what led up to one of the worst domestic terrorist acts in American history I think we’ll that find Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold weren’t your average teenagers. In my opinion they were cold blooded killers who had every intention to take as many lives as they could.
A little over two years ago, one of the worst tragedies concerning our nation’s children was playing out in a small rural town in Colorado. The date was April 20, 1999; the anniversary of Adolf Hitler’s Birthday, for any history buffs. But for everyone else the day started out like any other. In Jefferson County (often mistakenly reported as being in Littleton), Colorado, children went to school and parents went off to work. Neither was overly concerned about the other, or about how the day would go, but in a few hours, that would all change.
The Movie “Bowling for Columbine” takes place in the United States of America where gun violence is a known problem which affects many people's lives every year. Michael Moore interviews student victims who were injured during the shooting, visiting the world's largest gun manufacturer allowed him to see that guns in america are easy to acquire. The local bank gives out free guns when opening an account with them, a short walk down the street in a barber shop made purchasing ammunition easily accessible.
The parents of Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris should not be put on trial for the gruesome crime that their sons did and here are the reasons why.
F. I think that Eric changed over the last two years. The more he got closer to
Bullying is defined as, “unwanted, aggressive behavior among school aged children that involves a real or perceived power imbalance (2014). The effects of bullying negatively impacts, not only the target, but the initiator of the bullying as well. It is found that youth who bully their peers are more likely to engage in alcohol abuse, violent behaviors, engage in sexual relationships at an early age and become abusers within their relationships.
Everyone is familiar with bullying, it’s almost like a rite of passage for most Americans; we see it in movies and are all-too familiar with it. We typically don’t think about the consequences of bullying, but studies have shown that students who are bullied at school in grades 7-12 are 50% more likely to abuse substances (Promises Treatment Center). Bullying is the act of physical or verbal tormenting over a set amount of time, usually targeted at one person or a group of people. Bullying is an international issue that ruins the victim 's emotional well-being. Those who are victims of bullying can turn to drugs or other substances as a form of coping; people who bully can be shown to have abusive tendencies with these substances as well.
According to www.dosomething.org, over 3.2 million teens are bullied every year. But I’m not just here to talk about teen bullying, I’m talking about the long term effects on all of those 3.2 million teens after being bullied at a young age.
The harmful effects of bullying can manifest physically in kids and teens by causing sleep disruptions, gastrointestinal issues, and headaches. Researchers also noticed that bullying can cause changes in the brain. Stress coping mechanisms and cognitive abilities can be affected. Also, children are at a higher risk to contemplate or attempt suicide. (Bullying is a ‘serious health problem,’ report says.” CNN Wire, 10 May 2016.) I know in my own case, I was very depressed and became bulimic. I was obsessed with losing weight, and would make myself physically sick just so I didn’t have to go to school. I eventually ended up in the hospital, dehydrated and very weak. I was then home schooled after this, which ended the bullying, but I never opened up about why I did these things. It wasn’t until I was an adult that I finally told my family about being bullied. I carried a lot of emotional and physical effects of what happened to me as a child for many years. Bullying can have long term consequences reaching well into adulthood, such as anxiety disorders and depression, physical health problems, and low self-esteem. A study by the Mayo clinic suggests that adults who were subjected to bullying as children may have an increased risk of heart disease and diabetes. (Bullying in childhood linked to chronic disease risk in adults.” UPI News Current, 10 Mar. 2017.) So to help prevent bullying, what kind of changes can be made, and what
The student sat at her desk on Monday morning in English class, discussing the details of the weekend with her best friend. The bell rang at 8:45 a.m. and her teacher started taking attendance. It was a new week with so many things to accomplish. The teacher finished the morning details by completing lunch count. She then asked her pupils to quit visiting, and to open their literature books and begin reading. All of a sudden a sound rings through the hall, but it is not an ordinary school bell. It is loud and short. It was followed by several more blasts. These blasts were followed by echoes of yelling. High pitched shrieks could be heard throughout the classroom and possibly throughout the entire school. A look of terror was seen on the teacher’s face. She was trembling as she tried to make sense of the blasts the students had just heard. She instructed the class to find shelter in the cabinets and behind desks within the classroom. As the student headed to the cabinets, she glanced at the clock. It was 8:51 am. The blasts continued and could be heard coming closer to the classroom. She then went to the door to find… This scenario describes details that could occur at any school during a school shooting. Students began a normal school day, only to find it changed within minutes. This may be similar to what the students at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado may have experienced. Although the Columbine Massacre of 1999
1 in 7 Students in Grades K-12 is either a bully or a victim of bullying. Some parents are worried about changes, needs, and risk factors for their kids ages ten to fourteen. Kids are going to go through emotional and physical changes, like puberty. Some young teens are even at risk for depression and behavioral issues, including breaking the law. Other young teens may have certain needs. Well, all young teens have needs that need to be met!
Bullying is a major social problem faced with teenagers throughout the world. Current national statistics, according to government sources, indicate that a varying 20% - 70% of kids have been bullied or have witnessed bullying, of which are most common in middle school. The most common types of bulling are verbal and social. Many students dread the physical and verbal aggression of their peers, and many more attend school in a chronic state of anxiety and depression. It’s reported that 70.6% of young people say they have seen bullying in their schools. (StopBullying). While bullying can result in reluctance to go to school and truancy, headaches and stomach pains, reduced appetite, shame, anxiety, irritability, aggression and depression are also frequent effects.
Unfortunately, we live in a world where school bullying has become a problem for children in elementary, middle, and high schools. Studies show that children no longer want to go to school to get an education because of bullying. Bullying is best defined as the act of performing unwanted behavior over a repeated period of time (“What is bullying”, 2017). Also, there is a shocking 3.2 million individuals that are getting bullied each year in school. Thus, I believe that Bullying effects a child’s performance to do good in school because it causes health risks, lack of motivation, and promotes violence.
School is supposed to be a safe place for children whether they came from a happy home or not. Children go to school for a minimum of thirteen years and during this time is when they meet friends, fall in “love” with their first girlfriend or boyfriend. They find out who they really are. Unfortunately, during this time our children experience bullying and harassment from their peers. This can lead to some very dangerous decisions, suicide or schools shootings. Through out the years we have heard of a few school shootings, examples are Virginia Tech, Sandy Hook, and most famously Columbine High school. In this essay you will learn about the childhoods of the two young men who committed this violent crime and what lead up to the shootings.
