The Xcel Energy Leadership Safety Team was formed in 2011 and developed Safety Intervention/ Stop Work Responsibility and the Rules to Live By. After successfully rolling out the Safety Intervention and Rules to Live By processes, they focused on revising the Managing Multiple Injuries (MMI) program. Changes to the MMI were completed in the 4th quarter of 2012. In 2013, the team developed and delivered a training session focused on Leadership Safety Expectations and Accountability to over 650 leaders of at risk employees in Operations. The training focused on expectations of leaders to properly address safety issues as well as their role in understanding the work practices of those working for them. The Healthcare field is becoming more aware of how important it is to change the way that organizational culture is becoming in order to help improve patient safety. Even though patient safety plays a very important part of our health care system which helps explain the importance quality of health care. However, when trying to keep patients safe, it can be a demanding challenge because of human errors and mistakes that are made. According to World Health Organization, patient safety is the absence of preventable harm to a patient while in the process of health care (who.int/patientsafety). Being in the position of a clinical content manager, the first step in reporting problems is to make sure that when reporting a problem, it need to be done at the earliest stage to show the importance to the company. The approach that I would take as a Clinical content manager is to identify the problem, have regular shift meetings to address any issues, flag any errors that occurred, have regular safety meeting, give feedback to staff on any errors that were found, try to figure out the best solution not only for the patients, but staff also, and although being a team leader, I would give the staff the opportunity to address any concerns that they may have.
The main objective of Beaumont Hospital is to provide high quality, efficient, accessible services, in a caring environment for Southeastern Michigan residents. Beaumont Hospital believes that patient safety is just as important as medical progression. Therefore, Beaumont Hospital’s risk management program consists of identifying hazard associated risks, controlling risks, and monitoring the effectiveness of procedures/practices. Risk is a part of patient care and services because everything doesn’t always go according to plan. Catastrophic patient injuries often occur because of unanticipated failures. The risk management team is responsible of effective surveillance, analysis, and prevention of events which may injure patients, lead to malpractice claims, or cause loss to the health care system. The risk management staff at Beaumont use the Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) as a tool to anticipate what might go wrong with a process or product and how that failure effects the patient. FMEA is designed to dissect a particular process into its individual steps, isolate the potential steps that could cause the problem, assign a specific risk level to each abnormal step, analyze the risk potential for the process, and assign and action plan to correct the problem (Fibuch & Ahmed, 2014). The risk management program in any business, especially in a health care organization is an integral part of its day to day operation. The purpose of the risk management department is summed up by Kavaler & Alexander (2014), “…a program designed to reduce the incidence of preventable accidents and injuries to minimize the financial loss to the institution should any accident or injury occur” (p. 5). Protecting employees, patients, vendors and visitors is an ongoing process and one that needs to be updated when the healthcare organization has deemed necessary. This paper will demonstrate the importance of presenting the risk management program to new employees, compliance with the standards set forth by the American Society of Healthcare Risk Management (ASHRM), propose recommendations or changes needed to further improve the program, as well as examine the administrative process of managing a risk program.
The Company’s goal is to have zero work-related illnesses or injuries. However, in order to attain this goal, it will require a team effort involving both the Company and the employees. Only through such a coordinated effort can this safety plan be established and sustained.

Safety is an important function of our daily lives and requires the same attention we give other functions and processes within our daily job routines. Over the years as we continue to do our jobs and the same processes we can become less safe by using short cuts to make a process easier for ourselves. Also, the equipment we use begins to age and breakdown and cause unsafe conditions. Safety professionals use many different types of safety programs to combat safety related issues or problems one may encounter on a job site. Employee involvement is the most important part of any safety program. Without employee involvement safety programs are not as successful, because employees are sometimes not aware of the process and steps in place to protect them.
Your Manager/Supervisor - Your manager/supervisor must demonstrate active and visible leadership in work health and safety risk management. Also they must identify hazards and work health and safety risks from jobs, tasks and projects under their supervision.
This responsibility motivates the HR department and managers to implement stringent policies to prevent work-related injuries to avoid paying for higher workers’ compensation insurance. Moreover, it inspires the company to promote safety by organizing a safety committee to address hazards in the workplace to prevent injuries or deaths. The committee solicits employee suggestions and participation to increase compliance to company policies. It also develops various safety programs to promote employee wellness to improve their quality of life (Gomez-Mejia, et al, 2010).
A culture of safety requires the commitment of leadership to positively impact outcomes. Recent emphasis on the new CMS guidelines and third party reimbursement initiatives associated with patient outcomes, has grabbed the attention of leadership at all healthcare organizations. Safety First is a phrase most have heard throughout their career, but what impact does that have when there is an increase of safety incidents on base? Newly appointed safety officers inherit any outstanding safety challenges as well as any benchmark programs that brings safety to light. However, if the program is broken the safety officer must utilize the skills harbored within assigned personnel to make a difference for the betterment of the wing. The recommendation has been made for Verizon to consider developing a safety-training curriculum that will be a win-win for all. “According to Kevin Ehling a district manager for Administaff in Fort Worth, every company, regardless of size should consider a training program that will teach all employees on all levels how to increase job performance.” (Kevin, Ethling, 2009,) In this instance, training all employees on safety practices could eliminate the company’s exposure in many areas. When the employees increase their knowledge in an area, they have been empowered to produce. “In some respects, the potential of 21st century skills lies in the exploration of how digital tools (cameras, presentation software, computing equipment) and online resources can support and enhance traditional subjects, skills and teaching practices.” (Verizon, 2009).
It is important it have a written work Health and Safety Policy for the organizations and businesses which have management systems. The Work Health and Safety Regulation 2011 addresses Major Hazard Facilities in Regulation 558 and Schedule 17(1.2) and requires that the Safety Management System includes a Safety Policy, including the operator’s broad aims in relation to the safe operation of the major hazard facility, and that the safety policy must include and express commitment to ongoing improvement of all aspects of the safety management system. A Work Health and Safety Policy is an explicit statement of business commitment to work health and safety. It will include a statement outlining the importance which is placed on work health and safety and how it is to be implemented.
Just recently, All Weather Windows Commercial Ltd., has purchased a smaller company with a large glass manufacturing facility. This smaller company has approximately 150 employees that now work under our organization. Throughout this assignment, I will focus on basic safety initiatives to implement into the new facility. The reason I chose to focus on implementing basic safety initiatives, is based on the fact, this new facility is populated with many plant workers and has to now adopt my organization safety program.
