Many religions have value frameworks regarding personal behavior meant to guide adherents in determining between right and wrong. People in various religious traditions, such as Christianity, may derive ideas of right and wrong by the rules and laws set forth by the Ten Commandments. Each religious group has their own set of standard ways about how things should be done so yes two religious groups could be just as moral as the other. Although, I am a Christian myself and I strongly believe that the Lord is my savior. In Luke 6:37 “Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven” therefore, I would never judge someone or even think less of them because they choose to
Almost all religions with Gods have a set of morals they want their worshippers to follow, in this case I used the Christian religion as an example. Most Christians strive to be the best people they possibly can. While most tend to behave this way out of the goodness of their own hearts, some behave in this manner because they fear hell and God’s wrath. They believe that their behavior dictates whether or not they end up going to Heaven and Hell, and thus follow the morals laid out by the bible, i.e. the ten commandments. While religion plays a heavy role in determining one’s morals, people create their own morals as well. For example, a person may always hold the door open for others, not because they do it for fear of eternal damnation, they do it because they believe it is right. Gardner states that people do this to help achieve that better future each person has in their mind. In the end, everyone has this idea of what they want their life to be like in the future, and they develop their morals around that. When that person eventually dies, they die knowing that they followed their morals and were a better person for it in the grand scheme of things.
Those who follow a religion most likely base their moral standards on the words taught in their faith. What if a person could live an honest, righteous, straight and virtuous life, without any religious beliefs, at all? In addition, this same person could also possess compassion, consideration, empathy and tolerance and even instill these morals to their children. The basis of a non-religious moral code, is frequently, the Golden Rule, which has been implemented in many religions. Plainly stated, it suggests, if you would like it to be treated a certain way, another human would probably appreciate the same treatment. It’s a simple, straight-forward concept that echoes into far reaching corners of religions and stands on its own as the cornerstone for non-religious individuals. It is possible to live a moral lifestyle without following a religion or believing in a deity.
Out of all of Our Franciscan Values which include, reverence the unique dignity of each person, encourage a trustful, prayerful community of learners, serve one another, society, and the Church, foster peace and justice, and respect creation. Although it took me a good portion of the semester, I believe that I fully recognize and understand the importance of these values as well as how they are put into play every single day here at USF. The core/human values that I have put into action this semester include serve one another, society, and the Church as well as reverence the unique dignity of each person. While seem to correlate to each other as both can be carried out by someone at any given time. Throughout my first semester here at USF, I believe that these two values are the easiest to be put into play within our lives and fall hand in hand with one another.
After reading the course resources, answer questions 1-10. (10 points each) Please take time to answer each question completely.
One sees people of faith acting righteous and sin free but, behind closed doors, the same people are as sinful as everyone else. The bible outlines how Christian people are to live; it also holds the guidelines and morals that are so often forgotten yet still used to badger others through black lettered sings, typed slander, and words projected over speaker. One who goes against something they tell others not to do is called a hypocrite, and the worst kind of hypocrite is religious.
Being born in America where the majority of people 's faith is Christian , and my upbring in religion was based on those beliefs. I believe that there are many things in the Bible that are good , however the good is far outweighed by the unpalatable and contradictory parts of the Bible . Many people in faith have no evidence to justify claims, for example one time my Christian pastor went on about how the government should not be taking our guns. Yet Jesus was someone who valued things like love , compassion, acceptance , hope and giving. I don 't think Jesus would be advocating for gun rights. In my experience I have met some of the most judgemental , bigoted, hateful, and fake people in church. I do believe that most people are ,”good” but no one is perfect and any person can make bad choices. I think there are evil Christians, evil Muslims , evil Atheist, however there are good Christians , good Muslims, and good Atheists. I think most people would like to see the world as black and white, but morality is a gray area. Good and Evil are both subjective ideas , because someone 's opinion of how I live my life might be see as evil , whereas to my logical understanding it is morally good. I could rant all day and night about what is moral and why we should understand that almost no one on this earth believes that exact same as anyone else. Like most of my opinion as long as your faith and believes do not hurt anyone and do not legislate on things like science and the
It can be argued as to what defines morality. Morality in different societies can also be questioned. For example in the Bible it states that it is immoral for one man to have a sexual relationship with another woman once he’s married. On the other hand in the Quran it seems that it is perfectly all right that the Prophet had sexual relationships with 13 women. Aren’t we all human beings regardless of race and religion and shouldn’t the same ethical boundaries placed on all of us? This may seem irrelevant but the point being highlighted here is that there are differing opinions to morality. One’s goodness is more amplified when he increases in greatness. He comes under the scrutiny of moral obligations from the masses. Is it not a fact that there are many others who consume drugs and fall prey to drug addiction? Why are they not put under the
Just what is theology? This question can have a wide variety of answers, from irrelevant facts about God thought up by men centuries ago, to complicated theories discussed by scholars. Typically, the average 21st century man does not consider theology as relevant. Unfortunately, nothing could be further from the truth. Theology by definition has the characteristics of both expounding the truth, and impacting the believer with that truth (Himes, 2011). Therefore, theology and the church are intricately combined, in that the church embodies the revelation of God, and is reality, not theory (Himes, 2011). A personal practical theology must begin with revelation, not the individual (Himes, 2011), and proclaim
Mercy Values are everything I demonstrate in my life since I was little by the way my parents raised me to church until I was older and now teaching my own son them. Important values I demonstrate in everyday life is Compassion, Excellence, Human Dignity, Justice, Sacredness of life, and Service. Compassion is very important to me I always take time and put my life aside to listen to anyone and really put myself in their shoes and know how they feel and do what I can to make them feel better this is with family, work, friends, colleagues, anyone I come across. Excellence, this means a lot to me. I am a very dedicated person that rarely gives up I try my hardest at everything I do I thank my dad and grandmother for this he has taught me to never give up and I
“At the heart of individualism lies the belief that each individual person constitutes the center of one’s universe.” (Wilkens, & Sanford, 2009) Most would say this type of thinking has become ingrained into American culture and the American and even Christian worldview. This is broken down into utilitarian individualism, the pursuit of one’s personal gain; and expressive individualism, artistic and personal expression of uniqueness. Individualism could be simply put as being self-centered and believing that the world revolves around oneself. This belief says that the outcome determines the journey, that the individual is the moral authority, that absolute freedom is priority, and that one’s performance determines their worth. Individualism is a hidden worldview that has the power to affect us all.
Christianity. I first came to know Jesus through my grandmother. She is a very strong
When discussing and proving the person of Christ, there are two basic laws that must be addressed and proven. First you must prove that Christ is one hundred percent human (humanity), then you must prove that at the same time Christ is one hundred percent God (deity).
As Nietzsche points out, within society there is a tendency to conflate religious standards with morality. In fact, it is difficult to discuss morality at all without running into issues that appear to be religious by their nature, but which, upon reflection, do not need to be put under that blanket. According to Nietzsche, we tend to mix religion and morality together because that is how we developed morality from the beginning of humanity. In fact, “Nietzsche believes that all
Being an Atheist, I’ve had hundreds of arguments with Christians about Jesus and religion in general. No matter what evidence I provided, the Christian always seemed to bypass it with the Personal relationship cop out. They would tell me they don’t practice religion, and that they have a personal relationship with Jesus. They would insist that I take five minutes of my time at night and call on Jesus while I’m all alone. Christians believed that Jesus would answer me, and my pathetic life will never be the same. It dawned on me that they were merely regurgitating what was taught to them by others. That the Christian didn’t really have a personal relationship with Jesus, but a personal relationship with themselves. Being frustrated with the fact that Christians can actually get away with not providing substantial evidence, I decided to research the origin of the personal relationship copout. Who created the concept of a personal relationship? Is the personal relationship copout in the bible? How old is the concept of a personal relationship? These are the questions that turned on the light bulb in my head. I just had to research and find out the answers, so here it is.
A lot of different cultures do base what is morally right and wrong off of their religion, and if one religion differs in what they value from another, then their idea of what is morally right and wrong can differ. This leads in to my second premise which is that these different beliefs show that there are no universally correct moral standards. In support of this premise, as I have previously stated, different cultures do follow different religions and different religions are formed off of the idea that they do not agree with what another religion believes so they form their own, if they believed the same thing then they would just join. This is seen in history when Martin Luther broke away from the Roman Catholic church because of their corrupt policies and other reasons and formed the Protestant branch of Christianity. This is also proven by the stark differences in today’s religions like Muslim beliefs and Jewish beliefs
