The United States has a reputation for being free to all with promises of equal opportunity. America is not as equal as people think. In regards to income and wealth distribution, the U.S. has fallen behind a number of countries, such as Iran and Turkey ,and despite the freedom granted, America has become a place where inequality thrives and lower class people have little opportunity to move to the next financial class. Grades cause students from various schools to look almost identical on paper. Two students may both receive high marks in a particular class, but if the student are from different schools from different financial regions, further analysis can prove that these students are not of the same level of academic ability. The National Assessment of Educational Progress is test to measure the abilities of student in the same grades from various regions. An analysis of the 2009 National Assessment of Educational Progress by the New America Foundation shows that “a higher percentage of 4th graders in the Northeastern United States and the Midwest scored proficient or above in math on NAEP than in the South and the West” (4th Grade Math). Although students in the Northeast and Midwest scored better on the exam, students from the South and West may have received the same grades as the students in the other regions. The sense of achievement that students from poorer regions receive from their grades is disappear since the results of standardized test show how these students actually compare with other students. Throughout decades, education inequality is still one of the most deliberate and controversial issues in the United States. Thus far, the privilege or right to receive education has not attained the level of equality throughout the nation. Poor districts obtain less educational funds while rich districts obtain more, which create an immense gap between the quality of schools in poor and rich areas. In other words, the education gap is the root of inequality in America. Inequality in education is linked to the major problems in the society. The need for studies to be done to find ways of overcoming these inequalities is very inevitable. The means of mitigating these inequalities are important for the entire world. This is something of great interest due to the fact that children need quality education which is a pillar for a guaranteed future. Generally speaking, the distinctions among races, genders, and classes in the society have caused the educational inequality in America.
There was a time when America’s education system was top-notch according to the culture and society. With time, a myriad of things has changed, but unfortunately what has not evolved is the American education system. The country is still following a system which was not designed for the current global economic climate. Equality, as positive as it sounds is not as sufficient when it comes to education. The system treats students equally yet expect a similar culmination and outcome. Every child has his individuality and distinct abilities; one cannot judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree. Conversely, a few of the prominent reasons why the education system is failing are overcrowded schools, the rise of technology, and following the same old school hours.
The greatest country in the world still has problems evenly distributing education to its youth. The articles I have read for this unit have a common theme regarding our education system. The authors illustrate to the reader about the struggles in America concerning how we obtain and education. Oppression, politics, racism, and socioeconomic status are a few examples of what is wrong with our country and its means of delivering a fair education to all Americans.
Is the education system flaw to many students over the years? The education system in the United States has problems over the years because it has some flaws of helping students to succeed. Students who attend community college or university will have issues that will cost them to be in debt or could not complete it. The system tried many ways to bring students accomplish their degree, but the problem is that students face issues that will affect their goal of reaching their degree. The system has changed in order to fix some problems, however, the results make the prices for most colleges so high that not many students could afford. Not many students are rich because most students are on the benefits from social security or working. There is fifty percent of students that are graduates, while the other fifty percent are undergraduate students. Most colleges are not doing the right job to solve the system; however, they did little effort as they needed the requirements form students in order to meet their standards. My claim of the education system is that many college students drop out of school due to problems such as unprepared students, lack of globalism language, and financial aid needs.
In article “Growing income inequality threatens American education”, authors Duncan & Murnane (2014) speaks about the widening of gaps for educational opportunities between children of low- and high- income. By improving the educational outcomes, it will help to overcome the difficult challenges. The increase of social and economic inequality by globalization and technology has exhausted families and neighborhoods from reforming schools. When reforming schools we must focus on opportunities of more money, more choices, more accountability and new organizational structures. There needs to be a look upon the consistency and quality of experience and instruction given to the students (p.13-14). The government could provide a government-funded program that focuses mainly on children who are from a low-income family. If the government reforms the school system, it would allow the students more opportunities to expand their experience of attaining
In the modern world, education is the crucial key to the economic success. It can help an undeveloped country become a developing country, turn a developing country into a developed one, or even make a developed country become a more advanced economy. A successful education system is a system which makes sure that every student can access school equally. Over the past 50 years, the face of education system in the United States has changed greatly due to the changes in social values. These changes include the Civil Rights Movement, the nuclear family setting, technology, globalization, and population diversity. The Civil Rights Movement led to a court ruling, particularly, Brown vs. Board of Education, which held that separate was no longer equal. Moreover, activism for equal rights broadened to include women, senior citizens, gay people, and the disabled. As a result, schools adopted strict multiculturalism policies which permitted equal access to education for all Americans. Lifestyles differ throughout generations. It is because of several factors related to people’s behaviors, historical events, social environment, and scientific and technical progress. My upbringing and schooling experience has some new features different from what had my grandparents in their youth. Therefore, the American System of Education today and before still focuses on the religious education and socialization of students through multiple activities.
I, as an international student, traveled thousands of miles from Taiwan to the United States and started my doctoral study several years ago. At the beginning of the journey, I thought my sixteen-year educational training with ten-year English learning in Taiwan could help me smoothly adjust to a new academic culture and pursue the doctoral program of Foreign, Second, and Multilingual Language Education in the new culture. However, linguistic and academic cultural differences between Taiwan and the U.S. and other factors complicate my academic acculturative processes. In terms of academic culture, American education emphasizes critical thinking, expression of one’s thoughts and opinions, independent learning, originality, and engagement in scholarly conversations through comprehending their main arguments, proposing own viewpoints with scholars’ support, and making contributions in the field.
The need for education in order to be successful in the American society has increased dramatically over the past century. Even more so, the type of education needed has changed decade from decade. Unfortunately, the school system hasn’t been keeping pace, and a system based in the 1920’s isn’t getting the job done. Policies created to crutch the failing system aren’t doing their job efficiently to keep up with the demands and changes in society. Over 54,000,000 children are enrolled in some schooling (K-12), and that will continue to increase (PBS). Many of these children live impoverished and unable to escape. Historically, minorities and lower class children have not been receiving the education they are legally entitled to. An education system should be able to provide poor children the tools to become successful, however the system does the opposite and builds upon their condition creating a large gap between the poor and the rest of society. This gap continues to grow with more schooling and leaves lower class children and poor school districts behind. To better understand the education system in America, looking at how it was created shows a clearer picture.
In this day and age, the United States, leader of the free world, is not leading. Our economic system is failing. Even worse, our educational system falls short compared to other nations. Consequently, our literacy rate and mathematical abilities are far behind; and even more embarrassing is the fact that education is not doled out equally despite our rather relentless fight against inequality. After that, the white-collar workers who have college educations, their salary is falling in between 32,500 to 60,000 a year and they are in lower-middle class people (David Francis.).
