HR and Me On a hot summer evening in 2005 I was on the city bus going home from work thinking that when I got in my air conditioned house I was going to eat and watch my favorite shows with my mom. As I unlocked the door and felt that gust of cool air hitting my face my eyes fixated in the dinning room table to not only see my mom but my grandmother and an “army dude” sitting where I planned to eat my dinner. Before I got a word in my grandmother said over her oxygen tube, “Deanna, this man is from the Army Reserves and he’s going to talk to you about joining so that you can have money to go to school.” I was seventeen at the time and fresh out of high school. I didn’t want to join anything and wasn’t thinking about going to anyone’s war. Twelve year’s later I’ve found myself wearing this uniform. In twelve years I’ve aided and assisted thousands of Soldiers at command levels and overseas. I’ve acquired more values and morals as well as attained beneficial skills. I’ve been developing into Soldier, a leader, a problem solver, a postal operator, and a human resource (HR) professional. I also learned the culture of the Army, customs, and time-honored traditions. As an enlisted Soldier I’ve learned my profession. Professions earn the trust …show more content…
The majority of my lower enlisted years were spent shredding documents, retyping memorandums, and updating addresses and phone numbers. Little did I know what I was learning over time was how to account for sensitive information, work alongside the commander to ensure unit readiness, and strength management. The more I trained in my profession the more I learned to train others and become not only an asset to my section but to unit. I now feel proud and can walk tall knowing that the love I have for being an HR professional shows through my work and I can do said work during peacetime and more importantly, during
Twenty-six years ago I a 17-year-old boy joined the United States Army. I served my country faithfully for 22 years, two months and four days; I served in the Transportation Corps. My time in the army was a special period in my life. I gain a lot of life experiences as well as professional ones; the military shaped and molded me into the husband, father son, and brother that I am today. During my service, I grew up and learned several life lessons that would serve me well in and out of the army. To get a real understand on how the military shaped me into the person, I am today; I must first give you some insight into the person I was before I left for basic training. I graduated high school in 1991 just four months’ shy of my 18th birthday;
A Report on Influences and Developments in the External Environment that have an impact on HR policies and practices,using the framework of STEEPLE
For the past twenty years, I have been part of an influential organization; the USMC. My years of service have allowed me to learn from leaders and peers, alike, who took time to teach skill
From a very young age, my family taught me to not take the freedoms I’m blessed with for granted. Two of my great grandfathers held combat roles in WWII, and through their experiences, that I learned through my grandparents, I can begin to understand the sacrifices that come from military service. I’ve learned service provides an unmatched sense of structure and responsibility, which can and should be applied to everyday life, after the military, as well. Men and women learn the necessary skills of leadership and humility, characteristics that are already important to me, and ones I hope to further strengthen. I’ve wanted to serve in the military for my entire life and although my parents were not in the military, they have strongly supported
I understand that until such time as the assessment grade has been ratified by internal and external quality assurance verifiers it is not final.
Then I realized, my parents have no idea I’m going to Kentucky. When I got the airport I gave my parents a call, to let them know the terrible news, my mom said “I told you not to join the military”. Flying to Kentucky was my first time on a plane, my ears had so much pressure in them, that it gave me a headache. The flight was miserable, and lonely. I finally arrived in Kentucky. I didn’t know what to do, or who to talk. I saw a soldier in uniform with a clipboard in his, so I went over said “I’m Derrick Inabinet”. He looked at his list and said get your bags and go stand out front, the bus will be here soon. In my mind, I was like cool, this might not be that bad. The bus arrived, all the new recruits got on and then. The Drill Instructors took role. They had to make sure everyone was accounted for and present, we all laughed and talked the whole hour bus ride to Fort Knox Kentucky. That’s when all the fun and games ended. Approaching the front gate, the bus stopped, the Drill Instructors got up out of their seats and started yelling using foul language. They told us to put our face in our bags and we better not lift them up until we are told. Never in my life has anyone spoke to me in that manner, I just did what I was told. The bus stopped again, I heard the door open. Everything was silent; you could hear a pin drop from a mile away. It was the calm before the storm, suddenly you heard, you have
I want to start by addressing the topic of productivity. John Muir claims one of the reasons for my termination was due to a significant lack of productivity, yet doesn’t have evidence to support that claim. It’s impossible to falsify productivity due to weekly audits conducted by supervisors, which I review and sign.
The aim of this report is to demonstrate I can be an effective practitioner in Human Resources.
I 'm sitting at the dinner table with my little sister Abby on my left and in front of me is my Mum. Dad is at work at the moment. Dad works 24/7 while mum stays at home watching over Abby. We sit at the table silently with the radio on in the background. The Jazz music is interrupted by the radio announcer who says there is breaking news about to be made. The news is that Austria has declared war against Serbia. We sit there listening intently just in case another news is reported. At that moment, I knew that I wanted to fight for my country. I stand up and say, “Mum, I would like to fight for my country and be part of this”. My mum agrees with me and says that it would be an honor to say her son is fighting in the war. As I shove the last piece of broccoli in my mouth I tell mum I am going to Jacks. Jack is my best friend, and like me, he is 19. Jack lives down the road, we do everything together including school. When I see Jacks we discuss the war and what it means. He too wants to fight. Although we are scared, we want to protect our country and fight for its freedom.
In today’s competitive business market, it is very important to remember how effective planning and development play an important role in the overall success of the organization. The ability to plan and execute an effective strategy is only as good as the people that are placed in the positions to make these decisions. It is crucial to have an aggressive team that will be both competitive and motivated to carry out the objectives set forth. Not only is it important to understand how these individuals will effect the organization but also the importance of obtaining effective hiring practices. Real Estate human resources vary from agency to agency, but for larger companies, still has a strong presence in the company. Human resource
This module on human resource management reinforced some things that I already learned about human resource management, but more importantly, it introduced changes that have occurred since my last exposure to this topic. The technical advances in using the Internet as a resource to source for employees is a major change since my last exposure to this topic. Another area of change is the trend for outsourcing of employees. I managed an outsourced company that was hired to perform service on Xerox equipment in a specified territory. The type of work was just as the textbook described a repetitive type task. I learned from the text the reasoning and bottom line improvements that the company gained from the
Training and development is said to be beneficial for both firms and employees. Why then are some organisations and individuals reluctant to invest in training?
Because of dynamism and constantly evolving technology, today HR managers need to be aware of the technology that will increase effectiveness of their company. Human resource information systems (HRIS) were first introduced at General Electric in the 1950s, but since then it has come a long way. HRIS has gone from a basic process to convert manual information keeping systems into computerized systems, to the HRIS systems that are used today. Human resource professionals foresaw the possibility of new applications for the computer. The idea was to integrate many of the different human resource functions. The third generation of the computerized HRIS is a feature-rich, broad-based, and self-contained HRIS. It provides HR professionals with the time needed to direct their attention towards more business critical and strategic level tasks, such as leadership development and talent management. HRIS provides an opportunity for HR to play a more strategic role, through their ability to generate metrics, which can be used to support strategic decision-making (Lawler & Mohrman, 2003). The current generation of HRIS automates and devolves routine administrative and compliance functions traditionally performed by corporate HR departments and can facilitate the outsourcing of HR. More recent research shows greater use of HRIS in support of strategic decision making by HR. With an appropriate HRIS, HR staff enables employees to do their own benefits updates and address changes, thus
