The purpose of monuments is to commemorate a person or event. These monuments bring together crowds of people who feel joy, sorrow, or both. For example, after the 9/11 attacks, a memorial was created to recognize all the people who have lost their lives on September 11, 2001. The monument is shaped like a square that lists the names of those lost on that day, with a waterfall towards the center. People walk around New York, having the chance to see the memorial and think about the families and friends who have lost someone on that day. The National September 11 Memorial is a place of remembrance honoring those who perished in the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 and February 26, 1993. The creation of the memorial allow people to come together to reflect on what happened there, not alone but as a community in a public space where people gather and congregate. A lot of people did not believe what the government’s story about the attacks. The government claimed that it was true but some people still did not believe them. Other people believed them and respected all the people who died. In between the two waterfalls is a Museum and it has pictures and more facts about all the attacks on the day.
