Self Portrait
Throughout the course of the semester, I have learned a variety of essential skills needed in order to become an effective manager. Whether I was studying for a test, or just skimming through the chapters, I took some time to reflect on some of my own personal strengths/weaknesses and applied it to “Google’s Rules: Eight Good Behaviors for Good Managers. Possessing a balance of human, conceptual, and technical skills are the standard expectations of management, and I was floored to discover I already possess most of those skills. After completing the “What’s My Leadership Style Assessment” I learned I am a People oriented leader. With training, hard work, and dedication to improving in the areas where I lack, I realize I am well on my way to becoming a phenomenal manager. Covey states “Management is efficiency in climbing the ladder of success; leadership determines whether the ladder is leaning against the right wall.” (Covey, 1989) I must first focus on being a great leader, and taking the necessary steps. Throughout our course book, I have taken a plethora of Self Learning Exercises and have become more aware of my strengths, weaknesses, areas I want to improve and even those I should dilute. I view myself as a manager who doesn’t tolerate bullies, always encourages good energy in the workplace, easy to talk to, confident, knowledgeable on topics, and result-oriented. The type of manager that encourages a productive, clean but cozy work area where people
Effective leaders opt to implement a specific type of leadership style as a result of their personalities and job experiences, and apply it to their organizational structure. However, that particular type of leadership style a leader utilizes may not apply to every job situation (Peak et al., 2010). In order to be an effective leader, an individual must acquire the three basic leadership skills and they are as follows: (1) human relations; (2) conceptual skills; and (3) technical skills (Haberfeld, 2013). Additionally, a skillful leader must also be proficient in motivating, communicating, and problem solving (Hess & Orthmann, 2012).
In order for someone to be an effective leader, one would have to bestow certain skills and characteristics or some can be obtained over a period of time. Various assessments and questionnaires are designed to measure and give insight on certain skills or traits an individual may have. Some of those assessments include the skills inventory, leadership trait questionnaire, style questionnaire, leadership questionnaire, least preferred coworker, path goal, LMX, and the authentic leadership self-assessment. By conducting these questionnaires and assessments, not
The road to becoming an exceptional leader while rewarding, is one filled with numerous challenges. Developing the necessary skills required in order to successfully lead others is a life-long process. In this paper, I will discuss in details my leadership qualities. In addition, I will analyze proven theories that will help me address skills, weaknesses, and behaviors in my leadership skills. These theories-based changes will help form and guide my set of SMART goals. I will draft a plan for success in my journey towards becoming a great leader.

I have been in middle management since 2001 when I moved from a trainer to a supervisor. In the beginning, I was a very green supervisor; however, I had the desire and drive to become a great leader one day. As I looked at the results of this survey, I could see how much I had improved my leadership skills through the years. There are nine categories listed in the self-scoring survey of which that I will be reflecting on six of them. The first category of the survey to evaluate on my behalf is the life balance category. This category was difficult for me at when I first became a supervisor. I would work all hours of the day and night. I would have others take care of my children while I worked. Then, I realized in 2008 that I had to balance
Today a lot of the things we talked about really hit home with me, and I actually cried in a room full of strangers as I told them my story and why I chose to be a leader.
The Leadership Style Assessment tool, I am categorized to have free rein leadership style. I strongly disagree with this assessment for many reasons; I am detailed oriented and I never assume tasks will be completed correctly, unless, I complete the task myself. I am intently focused at work, rarely relaxed, as I want to ensure that I give 100% to my job.
Personal Assessment and Leadership Development Plan Introduction The focus of my personal assessment and leadership development plan is to denote the values, beliefs, thoughts, and actions that will propel me into a state of personal fulfillment as a more complete leader at home, in the workplace, and in the community. The preparation of this document will result in the creation of a deliverable to be frequently referenced and used as a reminder of the overall direction and more specific strategies to achieve my personal and professional hopes, dreams, and aspirations, as well as put into place a foundation for facilitating leadership development in my communities. My more immediate aspirations include being promoted at the
In hindsight I understand her approach. It was a new leadership style and I had to work through it. I developed a lot under her direction. Now that I think about it, I could have developed even more if I let my guard down some. I reported to this manager for a year and due to organizational changes she moved to another department.

I am in the process of discovering what my leadership style is in one of my master degree classes. I intend to communicate my results from the Keirsey Temperament Sorter, the Ipersonic, the Jung Typology, the Leadership Q and the Gallup Strength Finder assessments. I hope after reading this summary about my leadership style, you will be able to assist and support me in becoming a stronger, more efficient and successful leader that others can look up to
There are many leadership styles and is important to know which style you are. There are many ways one can learn their leadership style, for example, through assessments. Knowing your leadership style will help you become a better leader. Although there are many leadership assessments our text discussed four assessments that can give insights into building blocks of personality most commonly identified by peers, subordinate employees, and supervisors (Ledlow, et al, 2014). Based on a self-assessment of “Management Traits”, I found that industriousness is my strongest and ability to get along with people is my weakest. Actually, I’m a very results-driven. I hope to be successful, thus, I do things to the best of my ability to be successful. I always give myself pressure and make it as my motivation. I saw that I always push myself to reach my goal, because I am hardworking and enjoy working and getting the work done. Thus, I have my own rule, and that is that I have to study harder to get a good result. There is no doubt that I
Jim Collins and a group of 22 research associates conducted a five-year research project searching an answer on the question ‘how a company from merely good can be transformed to great one’ and identified that behind this transformation lies a level 5 leader. Level 5 leadership refers to the highest level in a hierarchy of manager’s capabilities. A level 5 leader transforms the organisation into a great institution through a paradoxical combination of personal humility plus professional will.
I believe you learn about leadership by acting as an example. You should be prepared to do the things you are asking others to do by getting on your hands and knees, if need be, and get your hands dirty. This engraves a picture into the mind of an employee or subordinate to what type of a manager you are. In this paper, I will cover the role a manager plays in an organization describing four functions of management: planning, organizing, leading, and controlling. I will then describe three traits: conceptual, human, and technical, which an individual must possess to become a successful manager within an organization and how they fit in with the four functions.
