I Search There have been many times in my college career that I have considered changing my major. When I told my dad that I was considering it, he would always ask what I wanted to do instead. After thinking about my options, I couldn’t think of anything else that I would be interested in besides teaching. I am already in my second year of college as an education major, and here at IU Southeast, most of the prerequisites that are required will not transfer over to another major. After having this fear for a several semesters now, I am curious to see what other jobs that I can obtain with an education degree, and the pay difference between careers with the same college degree.

Possibilities include a career in business, non-profit organizations, publishing, or government (What, 2017). When I researched careers and saw that business was a good option with the degree I was surprised. Education majors tend to thrive in business careers because of the qualities and skills education majors tend to have. Strong communication skills are critical in both teaching and business careers.
Deciding what I wanted to do with the rest of my life is one of the most difficult choices that I have had to make thus far in my life. As the economy shifts and changes, the annual incomes of careers change. Throughout recent years, teachers are not getting the pay that they deserve.

Some of the factors I have to consider in my choice of major include the big question – is this something that I want to do for the rest of my life? What are the time demands of my job? What is my salary potential? The national average cost of a public four-year education starts at approximately $26,000 a year. That includes tuition, fees, and room and board (Costs, 2017). That’s over $100,000 if I only attend school for four years. The median salary for an elementary teacher is roughly $43,000 a year (Teacher, 2017). If I could spend nothing for an entire year, I would still not have earned enough to pay back half of my student
The career that I am going to research is teaching at the middle school level. Teachers educate students, they inspire students, they learn from the students, and they change the way they teach, to better help the children learn, as well as change the way the children learn and think.
My career in education, I am currently leading the Mathematics department in Paterson Charter School for Science and Technology besides my teaching duties last 4 years. I work closely with teachers in the department to make sure they implement the school policies and curriculums in their classroom properly. As a department head, I visit classrooms and observe the routines
The career that interests me is a kindergarten and elementary school teacher. In the Nebraska Career education model, this career is under Human Services and Education, which is a match with my NCC assessment results. At this level of education you teach them the basic subjects, such as reading and mathematics. In addition to the basics you will also help them learn social skills, such as sharing and communicating with others. Although children at this age are at the beginning stages of learning, their enthusiasm and energy levels are high, so it is very important to create stimulating lesson plans to keep them focused. Each lesson plan must include several areas in order to complete the standards required by the state in which you are working in.
Growing up in a low income community where high crime and violence is prevalent, I’m aware of the anxiety, trauma, and fear that individuals living in these conditions may experience. I was born and raised in East Los Angeles where I saw how a lack of financial resources, and opportunities affected the life opportunity and academic success of those around me. The loss of loved ones who were misled to a pathway of gang violence, drug and alcohol made me aware of their connection to oppressive systems both painful and harmful to a community. As I continue to pursue higher education, I am reminded of those who were victims of social marginalization. Their fatal stories but also their resilience remind me of the importance of civic engagement and leadership. I want to pursue a career in counseling, because, I see the need of leaders who are passionate, empathetic, and determine in building stronger and safer communities. By obtaining a MS. Counseling I hope to learn the skills needed to help me be a better leader in my community.
Pursuing a degree in secondary education allows you to enter a career as a teacher at the high school level. High school teachers tend to teach students about a single subject. When I was set on majoring in English I knew that I had given myself a variety of career choices to choose from. During my last semester in college, I thought about how I would transfer my English degree into a career that I would love just as much as I did English. I knew that I wanted to own my own business, work flexible hours and be out with people on a regular basis which is why I choose Real Estate. I can say with confidence my English degree plays a big role in my career.
The career I have chosen is Early Childhood Education. This type of teaching is at the elementary level. I would be working with children in pre-kindergarten through the fifth grade. To become an Early Childhood Teacher, I will need a high school diploma and a Bachelor’s Degree. After I receive my undergraduate degree I will be awarded a teaching certificate and able to begin teaching immediately after.
There are many reasons why I would like to obtain a graduate degree. First of all, I want to better myself. I currently could not have obtained my current job if I had not received my Bachelor’s degree from Bethel. The degree has opened so many doors for me in the past few years. I unfortunately got started with college later in life; however, it has been one of the best things I have ever done. After I graduated high school, I was done with school. I didn’t want any part of it. I got married way too young and felt like I would never need a higher education. Plus, I did not have a good support system and did not feel empowered to set any goals for myself. I was told I would never make anything of myself. As I grew older and my marriage crumbled, I realized the only way for me to further my career would be to finally obtain a degree. With a new support system and someone telling me there’s nothing I could not do, I decided to enroll in Bethel. One of the best decisions I ever made. The feeling of accomplishment and knowing that I myself, was able to earn a degree.
I have been in the wireless industry for twelve years and in an area sales manager for ten of those years. While I have a solid resume as far as experience in leadership, I know I could be looked over if I do not have a degree. That is one of the main reasons I decided to get my degree and another reason is self-accomplishment. I will be the first person in my immediate family to get my degree. Once I get my degree in organizational leadership, I plan to start looking for a job in Human Resources to get experience in that field while I am getting my masters in Human Resource management.
Education is a vital aspect to a higher quality of life. There are multiple reasons as to why you should pursue an education. Education gives you insight on learning how to live a physically and mentally healthier lifestyle, as well as allowing you to obtain a higher income. Along with this, education grants you to enhanced skills that are beneficial throughout your life; such as communication and decision making. All of these contribute to a superior lifestyle. Personally, my strongest driving force for learning would be to expose myself to a wider window of opportunities, which will allow me to have a brighter future. A wise man once said that knowledge is power. I concur with this thought as I believe that without knowledge, you are at a disadvantage because you build a threshold around your possible opportunities. With a wider window of opportunities comes a wider perspective. This wider perspective ensures that you are versatile and adaptable to your surroundings.
Factors to be considered are salaries, what will I start off with? What degree do I need to earn what I actually want? What am I good at? For sure the decision is complicated. Throughout this essay, we have compiled the three most popular fields of study chosen by college students.
There are many majors that are suited for all different types of people. While some know exactly what they want to do, others have to switch at least once to find out what they want. Originally, I was a psychology major and I knew exactly what I wanted to do, but then after a while I didn’t feel the passion I had when I first took the class even though I was extremely knowledgeable in it. It was then I realized I started day dreaming more of majoring into education. I then took the switch and became an education major. This report allowed me to dig deeper into this major since I, myself, am still looking more into it and learning along the way. Three key points I felt were beneficial to me were the prerequisites of this major, various activities I can do to gain experience, and the career opportunities I would have with this degree.
I’m currently embarking on the career path of a Postsecondary teacher. This job allows me to utilize the skillset I have already gained from being a Police Officer. I understand that there is time to change my major but I don't want to be someone who changes their major frequently. I need to chose something carefully,
There are a ton of majors that students can choose from as they embark on their college journey. While the list hints at endless possibilities, students need to narrow down the path they choose within these fields. “Students feel the pressure to choose a major sometimes without a great deal of self-awareness,” said Anne Scholl-Fiedler. “Sometimes a certain major doesn’t necessarily equate with a certain kind of job.” She continues. Some majors leave many opportunities and not just restrain the student to one job after they graduate. For example, students majoring in liberal arts or social sciences, mostly general studies are able to choose from a wide range of careers that alleviate some stress when wanting to find a job after graduation. “Someone who’s interested in being an attorney doesn’t necessarily have to major in criminal justice or paralegal studies,” she continues. English can be another option for being an attorney since the English major leaves open facets to careers.
