**Title** We constructed a top-down hypothesis that people exhibit an increase in their performance level when working out in the presence of others as opposed to working out alone. To test our hypothesis, we questioned 12 males and 12 females that are between the ages of 18 and 24, and are frequent gym-goers. We asked them whether or not they preferred to work out in front of other others, or if they would rather work out alone, and why. We formatted this question in a standard text message that we sent out to eight people each. In order to duplicate these findings, there are a few design features that should be present. First, the individuals must attend a gym or workout class on a regular basis (about 2-3 times per week). Also, on top of this, they must have …show more content…
The theory of sexual selection states that traits that help with mating success can be selected for, even if they hurt chances of survival. High testosterone levels are not necessarily great for a man health wise. However, the men with these high levels are the ones that are the highest performers in the gym. The theory of intrasexual competition involves an individual out-competing other individuals of the same sex. This goes hand in hand with people increasing their performance level when wanting to outperform others in the gym. By looking like the strongest man, you can attract more high quality females. The same concept works in reverse for women. If they look like the most physically fit female, more men will want them. Another theory in psychology that this relates to is the imaginary audience theory. This theory involves an individual having an egotistic belief that people around them are watching them and their every move. In order for an individual to feel the need to out-perform another, they must believe that others are watching
Today’s males and females feel like they have to fulfill the features of their gender, but the one they may be the most conscience about is their body features. Men focus on getting stronger to look tougher and compensate for their lack of being a gentleman towards women “ Toughness is in the soul and spirit, not in muscles”( Alex Karras). This quote talks on something men do not understand which is they should not only exercise their physical muscles, but also their internal muscles which are their politeness and kindness towards anyone. Men and society fail to see that internal features are more outstanding than physical features. Meanwhile women also focus heavily
Many discourage new forms of exercise because it can be scary to try something that they have never tried before. Many who get bored easily once they mastered something and want to try their hand at something new. However many of these individuals are older and can find discouragement when seeing someone younger than them being better. However in a group setting many can find comfort with other people to give them tips and tricks as well as learning with others in the some level and
This general awareness resulted in about 17% of the U.S. population becoming more enthusiastically committed to fitness activities, with 63% recognizing the importance of fitness activities and 25% of whom actually attending health fitness clubs. Also, a recent survey showed that 37% of exercisers were motivated by the desire to control weight. Consciousness about body image and the desire to reduce stress and meet new people also had an impact on the health club phenomenon.
Five people provided interviews to gather the user observations. All five of these people enjoy exercising on a daily basis. The group is comprised of three men and two women. All were interviewed in person with pen and paper for data gathering. The data that was gathered was then interpreted into needs and from that a survey was developed.
I developed a character to be a representative of the main audience for my essay by taking the characteristics of individuals observed in McComas’ weight room and combining them into one persona. Based off of this, the persona is a male Virginia Tech college student who is familiar with the weight room and the concepts of body building. He is in good physical shape, and wears typical gym clothing, such as gym shorts, sweatpants, t-shirts, or wife-beaters. He has long-term experience with the majority of the weight and machines found in McComas’ weight room, and falls into the category of “serious lifters,” rather than just an occasional gym-goer. He is very perseverant in his work out regiment, and has a focused mindset.

Fitness is in. The percentage of people belonging to health clubs and gyms has doubled over the past 20 years. More growth is expected, fueled by an aging Baby Boomer generation in search of eternal youth and the reality that regular exercise can prevent or control diseases that are driving health care costs relentlessly upward. The 24/7 fitness opportunity is the newest model of fitness centers today.
I can relate this to myself. I go to Harbor Point Gym. It is fairly huge with ample of machines and cardio equipments. There is another room for people who wants to practice yoga and meditate. While working out at the gym, I am always guarded about myself being watched by other people, peers passing by the gym, cameras at the gym etc. it’s a human tendency and people really do look and analyze people. There’s always a thought running at the back of my mind what if other people saw me or made fun of me. This thought makes me behave in a right, well-mannered way. Nobody forced me to behave in a certain way but it was that creepy thought of myself being mocked. I did not just behaved well but also pushed myself a little extra.
I will have two groups both containing 5 people, in total 10 people all are males, one group contains people who practice an aerobic exercise on a daily-basis (soccer and basketball), while the other group contains people who do not practice an
There are a variety of topics that are interesting in life. This interest may then become a point of inquisition, where an individual may formulate a relationship between two variables, which may or may not influence each other. Next, a hypothesis is formed and tested. In this same manner, a school educator was interested in determining the potential relationship between grade point average (GPA) and IQ scores among ninth graders. The educator random sampled 30 ninth graders, ages 14 years old and administered the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Fourth Edition (WISC-IV). This writer will be expanding further on this topic and will formulate the null and alternative hypothesis, describe the four scales of measurement, describe whether if there is a correlation significant (positive, negative, or no correlation) enough between both variables, describe the strength of the relationship, describe what the results reveals about the hypothesis, and what conclusions can be drawn from the results.
I elaborated two tables based on the subjects who do exercise constantly and the subjects who don’t, I present those tables in table 1 (athletic people) and table 2 (people who doesn’t do exercise constantly)
It is well established that people became ill shortly after the picnic. The root cause of the problem is unknown, and there are a lot of variables. By systematically using the scientific method this will enable Earl to find an objective, and reliable conclusion to his dilemma. Making a hypothesis without conducting background research would be futile. I would suggest him looking at his data more closely. Observation is a critical process and maybe he should become more observant. He has begun to ask questions, but only by asking the correct questions to the appropriate sources will he be able to find the route cause. Earl also has state it was at the school picnic, it would be nice to know if it was preschool, since younger children are more susceptible to food poisoning. Earl continues to observe by naming the different foods that were consumed and that everybody ate something. He states that within 24 hour that several people displayed symptoms of food poisoning. There were 30 people who became ill. Later, his hypotheses are either the potato salad or that the under cook hamburger has contributed to food poison at the picnic. At this time he has not run any experiments to ensure what made the people sick and even if he did I can 't imagine him able to conducting the appropriate test. He will have to collect credible and reliable information in the next process. Doing research will enable him to analyze what food source caused the food poisoning. Lastly. Earl will have to
When exercising with friends and family you enjoy the workout. It is also a way to help keep each other on track to your goal and reward each other and it’s easier to stay motivated. When choosing activities that appeal to you and that you can handle physically and suits your lifestyle, that way you’re more likely to stay motivated and find it an enjoyable process. When setting goals that are realistic and you are likely to successes, aim for an amount of time, or type of exercise to complete rather than losing weight, or gaining strength, this will help you work your way up to your larger goal. By doing these things you will have a higher chance of success and staying motivated when participating in physical
In today’s busy world, it can be hard to find the time to even think about one’s fitness, let alone actually do anything to maintain it. The average person has school, work, family, pets, and many more distractions in their life to ensure their fitness is left on the backburner. However, when the thought of exercise does eventually enter their mind, the thought that often comes forefront is that of the gym. The concept of a gym is simple, populate a building with the necessary equipment for a variety of physical activities, attracting people who want to get that perfect body or even just get back in shape. However, many people who have never frequented a gym often come up with a plethora of reasons not to go.
Although, athletes are the role models the boys grow up playing sports but when they do not perform in an excellent or right way they are chided as girls in a away to help them perform better. The language that is in the media attributes and reinforces the dominant discourse that males are stronger than females. (Public research group, 2010). In addition, men are expected to have healthy strong bodies and simultaneously on the other hand isolate and seclude themselves from females as to not care how they look. Men that are obese are subjected through oppression as a result of the factor that they do not fit in the masculine stereotype of a muscle built body. Furthermore, young boys are taught this early and consequently reproduce this discourse to discriminate others in school that do not fit in to Western culture's ideology of masculinity. This discrimination of the obese instills a fear on the youth that to be fat is not ideal and is therefore seen in revulsion and hatred. Nevertheless, the discourse implies that genetics do not play a role and that every male can get this perfect body of masculinity in a sense. Therefore, a man would need to endure the journey for how ever long it takes to achieve this. In contrary, this is not the truth a man may go the gym everyday for a number of years and never achieve this form of masculinity because for their body type and genetics is impossible. Moreover, the stereotypes against overweight men at a first glance
