Ramachandran plot

The peptide backbone can rotate about 2 bonds. The N-Cα bond that generates the φ angle and the Cα -C bond that generates ψ angle. The dots in the Ramachandran plot indicates the favorable φ and ψ angle combinations a protein backbone can have.

Each secondary structure have a characteristic range of  φ and ψ angles . Hence by looking at the Ramachandran plot of a protein we can decipher which secondary structures are there in that protein.
