Question

A methods analyst at Integrated Products Corporation (IPC) has been studying the line of
assembly that produces optical readers for barcodes. The goal of the analysis is to reduce the
idle time of workers on the assembly line to lower cost per labor
of optical readers. This information is applicable:

TASK Precedents Time (min)
A. Form the purchased assemblies into kits - 1.35
B. Inspect kit assemblies A 2.20
C. Process the control board in the auto-insertion equipment line - 1.90
D. Process controller card in welding equipment line C 2.39
E. Trim and finish control board. D 1.75
F. Assemble power unit to frame. B 1.25
G. Assemble the reader unit to the frame. F 0.90
H. Assemble control board to frame. E, G 2.49
I. Assemble the Deployment Unit to the Rack H 2.19
J. Inspect and test the finished optical reader I 2.40
K. Pack the finished optical reader. J 0.69

20 optical barcode readers are to be produced on the production line per hour. In
average, they are only productive 50 minutes per hour, due to staff time, breakdowns
of machinery and start and stop times. Since the union contract restricts the types of
task that can be combined into workstations, tasks can only be grouped within
these compatibility sets:

Compatibility Group TASK
GROUP 1 A, B
GROUP 2 C
GROUP 3 D
GROUP 4 E
GROUP 5 F,G,H,I,J,K

For example, tasks F and G could be combined on a workstation, but tasks E and F could not.
Tasks within compatibility groups can be combined while still fulfilling
with precedence relationships. In other words, you can combine adjacent tasks along
length of the network diagram. Group I work is essentially manual, requiring only
many inexpensive tools.

Determine: a) The cycle time in minutes; b) the minimum number of workstations for this
contract; c) Balance of lines by the corresponding heuristic.
