Reaction of 2-bromo ester with carbonyl compound in the presence of Zinc metal lead to formation of beta-hydroxyester, is known by special name reaction called as Reformatsky reaction .
In the above reaction reaction , ethanol when react with 2-bromo ester in presence to Zinc followed by hydrolysis led to formation of ethyl-3-hydroxybutanoate (A) . This when react with acid forms 3-hydroxybutanoic acid(B).
3-hydroxybutanoic acid when undergoes reduction with hydrogen + platinum forms 3-hydroxybutanal(C). This when undergoes futher reduction with DIBAL-H reduction of only alcohol occur giving final product butanal.
