In UV-visible spectrum, different types of electronic transitions taking place between the HOMO and the LUMO levels are shown. A molecule will absorb light having a range of wavelengths and this causes the electronic excitation.

In the absorbance spectrum, a graph is plotted between absorbance of the colored compound and the wavelength of absorption. This graph indicates the range of wavelengths that are absorbed by the molecule. λmax corresponds to the wavelength where the absorbance is maximum in the absorption spectrum. An example for the absorbance spectrum is given below.
