Project 2: Food Dye Spectroscopy

Which scale (percent transmittance or absorbance) is most useful for
collecting data from the spectrometer? Why?

Expert Answer

Step 1

The quantity of light which is absorbed by a given solution is expressed in terms of percentage transmittance or absorbance.

Let us assume that the intensity of the light passing through a sample in a spectrometer is denoted by a symbol ‘I’.

The intensity of the light that passes through a reference cell in the spectrometer be ‘Io’ .

Absorbance of a solution is given by the formula :

Step 2

On the other hand percentage transmission is given by the formula;

Step 3

For collecting data or quantitative work Absorbance is more useful than percentage transmittance since absorbance is directly proportional to the concentration of the solution. This relationship was given by Lambert and Beer law.

According to Lambert and Beer’s law, the absorbance of a solution is directly proportional to the concentration and the path length of the sample....
