Chapter 1, Problem 18P
The virus called HIV causes AIDS, a devastating and often deadly disease. Several drugs are available to treat HIV infection, but all are expensive. Used separately and in combination, these drugs have resulted in a huge drop in AIDS deaths, An expensive new drug shows promise for treating HIV/AIDS patients, especially in preventing passage of the HIV virus from a pregnant woman to her fetus. What is the DQ for administering this drug to (a) a man who thinks he may be infected with HIV, (b) a pregnant woman who is HIV positive, and (C) an unborn child whose mother has AIDS?

Yeast converts glucose to ethanol and carbon dioxide during anaerobic fermentation as depicted in the simplechemical equation here:glucose ⟶ ethanol + carbon dioxide(a) If 200.0 g of glucose is fully converted, what will be the total mass of ethanol and carbon dioxide produced?(b) If the fermentation is carried out in an open container, would you expect the mass of the container and contents after fermentation to be less than, greater than, or the same as the mass of the container and contents before fermentation? Explain.(c) If 97.7 g of carbon dioxide is produced, what mass of ethanol is produced?
Prior to 1983, pennies were made almost entirely of copper. If the scrap value of copper is $3.89 per pound, and each penny contains 2.95 g of copper, what is the scrap value of 7955.0 pennies (i.e., having a face value of $79.55)? Note: selling currency for scrap is illegal in the U.S.!

- Nanotechnology, the field of building ultrasmall structures one atom at a time, has progressed in recent years. One potential application of nanotechnology is the construction of artificial cells. The simplest cells would probably mimic red blood cells, the body’s oxygen transporters. Nanocontainers, perhaps constructed of carbon, could be pumped full of oxygen and injected into a person’s bloodstream. If the person neededadditional oxygen—due to a heart attack perhaps, or for the purpose of space travel—these containers could slowly release oxygen into the blood, allowing tissues that would otherwise die to remain alive. Suppose that the nanocontainers were cubic and had an edge length of 25 nm.a. What is the volume of one nanocontainer? (Ignore the thickness of the nanocontainer’s wall.)b.
