While working in Puerto Rico, Paul E. Hertz and his students studied a second species of lizard, the yellow-chinned anole, Anolisgundlachi, using the procedures described in Figure 1.16. Their results for coppermodels and living lizards are presented in the Figure. Based on these data, do you think that A. gundlachi regulates its body temperature? Why or why not?

Summary Introduction

To review:

Whether Anolis gundlachi regulates its body temperature or not.

Introduction:

Paul E. Hertz of Barnard College studied the regulation of body temperature in a lizard’s body. Studies have revealed that they maintain thermal homeostasis by perching in the sun to warm their body and for cooling down their body temperature they rest in shade. Null hypothesis stated that the lizards do not regulate body temperature and perch at random.

Explanation of Solution

They randomly placed the copper models of lizards in shade and in sun to measure the percentage of sunny and shady areas in that particular place. The copper models were used to know the percentage of real lizards that would perch in sunlight, as a result of chance. The temperature of the models provided information about the temperatures of lizards at which they perch.

It can be observed from the graph that around 90% of the models were placed in shade and only 10% of the models were placed in the sun...
