Concept explainers
Plants use the process of photosynthesis to convert the energy in sunlight to chemical energy in the form of sugar. While doing so, they consume carbon dioxide and water and release oxygen. Explain how this process functions in both the cycling of chemical nutrients and the flow of energy through an ecosystem.

- Is the following statement true or false? Unlike animals, which make many ATP by aerobic respiration, plants make all of their ATP by photosynthesis.arrow_forwardWhat two products result from photosynthesis? a. water and carbon dioxide b. water and oxygen c. glucose and oxygen d. glucose and carbon dioxidearrow_forwardExplain why we say that photosynthesis feeds most life on Earth.arrow_forward
- Write a paragraph comparing and contrasting cellular respiration and photosynthesis including the role of the electron transport chain, electrons, hydrogen and ATP synthase in the process and state relationship between the two processes.arrow_forwardCarbon dioxide in the atmosphere traps heat. Scientists are concerned that too much carbon dioxide is being released into the air by human activity. Using your knowledge of the carbon cycle, where do you think this carbon dioxide is coming from? List at least three possible sources of human-related carbon dioxide production. Carbon dioxide is produced by the burning of fossil fuels.arrow_forwardExplain how the carbon cycle is related to energy flow in ecosystems. SIMPLE EXPLANATION IF POSSIBLE.arrow_forward
- One step of photosynthesis impacts directionality to the photosynthetic process explain how this happens.arrow_forwardDiscuss how the plant could control the availability or function of at least one of the reactants of photosynthesis. Explain photosynthesis in your own words, as you would to a group who has never heard of photosynthesis before.arrow_forwardWhich process balances photosynthesis to maintain the law of conservation of mass and energy in living systemsarrow_forward
- Photosynthesis plays an important role in maintaining life in most ecosystems on Earth because it has an impact on how organisms obtain their energy. Write a claim that supports the idea that photosynthesis helps sustain life on Earth, and support that claim with at least one piece of evidence.arrow_forwardExplain the relationship between photosynthesis and respiration in the cycling of chemicals and flow of energy in ecosystems.arrow_forwardPlease describe the processes and organelles of photosynthesis and cellular respiration. Explain how these are crucial for energy transformations in the biosphere. Using word and chemical equations, show how they are both part of the biological carbon cycle.arrow_forward
