Concept explainers
(a) A unit of time sometimes used in microscopic physics is the shake. One shake equals 10−8s. Are there more shakes in a second than there are seconds in a year? (b) Humans have existed for about 106 years, whereas the universe is about 1010 years old. If the age of the universe is defined as 1 “universe day,” where a universe day consists of “universe seconds" as a normal day consists of normal seconds, how many universe seconds have humans existed?

- While a meter is the fundamental unit of length, most distances traveled by humans are measured in miles or kilometers. Why do you think this is?arrow_forwardExplain why, when defining the length of a rod, it is necessary to specify that the positions of the ends of the rod are to be measured simultaneously.arrow_forwardRoughly how many heartbeats are there in a lifetime?arrow_forward
- A rectangle expands and contracts with time t (in seconds). Its area is given by A= 4 + sin t square meters. At t = 3.14 (pi), the following is observed. (1) the width of the rectangle expands at the rate of 0.1 meters per second. (2) The width of the rectangle is 1 meter long How fast is the height of the rectangle changing at t = 3.14 (pi)?arrow_forwardHow do you convert from days to years?arrow_forwardUsing a single dimensional equation, estimate the number of steps it would take you, walking at your normal stride, to walk from the Earth to Alpha Centauri, a distance of 4.3 light-years. The speed of light is 1:86 x 105A miles/s.arrow_forward
- Assume your hair grows at a rate of 1/44th of an inch per day. How fast is that in nm/s (nanometers per second)? Given that a typical atom is on the order of 1 x 10^(-10) m in diameter (see Table 1.3 on page 18 of the textbook), at approximately what rate does the protein synthesis that assembles your hair strands deposit atoms in units of atoms per second? I need the second question to be rounded to 1 significant digit.arrow_forwardOn the planet Zebulon, the standard unit for length is the clorf (cl) and the standard unit for time is the beedle (be). After many years of research, you have determined that 1clort = 0.765 meters 1beedle = 1.957 seconds (1cl = 0.765m) (1be = 1.957s) If you are driving at a speed of 85mi / h , how fast are you going in terms of clorés per beedle (cl/be)? NOTE: 1 mi = 1609 m.arrow_forwardone meter is 100 cm. Does it therefore follow that one cubic meter is 100 cubic centimeters? explain whyarrow_forward
- Is the total energy of the universe is constant? How?arrow_forwardWhich of the following will result in a dimensionless number if x and y have length dimensions, z has mass dimensions, and a has time dimensions?arrow_forwardA lagos commercial bus is driving at a speed of 219ft per minute. a) what is this speed in light per year b)how many square meters are in a area of 6.0 km²arrow_forward
